Aspiring Transformational Principal Academy

Lead the change you want to see in urban schools

Page 20: Superintendent/District Office Luncheon Thursday, June 26, 2013

Why an Aspiring Transformational Principal Academy?

• MPS has 13 schools designated as “priority” schools and 23 schools designated as “focus” schools by the state’s new accountability system

• Thousands of students at these schools are not getting the quality education they need and deserve in order to be “college and career ready”

• Most of these schools have been low-performing for years -- multiplying the negative social and academic impact on students, families, and our community

Page 21: Superintendent/District Office Luncheon Thursday, June 26, 2013

Why an Aspiring Transformational Principal Academy?

AVID and Leadership

• AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college readiness system for elementary through higher education that is designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance.

• The AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional learning, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.

• We are in the process of infusing the AVID strategies into our Principal preparation programs.
