Highlighting featuresIntroduction

E-Labs trip circuit supervision relay type TS101 isdesigned for supervision & monitoring of trip coils andtrip circuits of power circuit breakers. It guarantees anefficient control system for power plants andsubstations.

The health of the circuit breaker and associated cablingof the trip circuit (trip cables and inter panel wiring) is avital element for proper and efficient operation of thetrip scheme. It is an important consideration for apower plant or substation design to monitor thehealthiness of the trip circuit.A faulty trip circuit wouldcompletely jeopardize an efficiently and perfectlydesigned protection system. In case of faulty trip circuitthe breaker shall refuse to open under fault conditionand heavy currents will continue to flow through thepower system. This would cause heavy losses andf ai lu re o f t he p ow er s ys te m b y g en er at in g

indiscriminate tripping and probable loss of numerouspower system components would be experienced. Thefault may spread to a wide area and numerous upstreambackup protections shall be tripped.

Relay TS101 is specially designed to serve thesupervision function of trip circuits and used for in timedetection of such trip circuit /trip coil faults.

Operating Principle

TS101 is the best selection to ensure the availability of

the trip circuit and the trip coil. It detects the validity

and integrity of the trip coil and trip circuit of the circuit

breaker. The relay detects faulty or disconnected trip

circuit or faulty trip coil condition and generates alarm

on non availibilty of trip circuit coil In this way it

ensures availability of trip circuit and trip coil,

confirming healthy trip operations It facilitates timely

maintenance (if required) before occurrence of a real

fault with faulty trip circuit. The relay performs its job

for both circuit breaker conditions (open & close) and

can also be used for the supervision of closing coil

The relay monitors the continuity of the tripping circuit

by acting as a current generator. The circuit arrangement

is such that this current generator injects the current

(=2mA @ normal voltage) into tripping loop and then

through the circuit breaker trip coil. The magnitude ofthis supervising current is kept very low so that the coil is

neither heated up nor it is actuated. When the trip coil or

the trip loop is open, this continuity is lost and the relay

detects this open circuit and the alarms general alarm

and trip circuit faulty are initiated. The initiation of this

alarm is time delayed by 400ms. In addition, the relay

continuously monitors the circuit breaker control

voltage for under voltage conditions and activates an

output contact in case the DC falls below a settable

value for a settable time In either of the faults a general

alarm is activatedon therelay.
