A WELCOME FROM CINDY & WILLIAM
Being person-centered sounds simple, but sometimes can be misinterpreted for doing what one thinks is best for an individual. The Arc of Howard County is a person-centered agency that prides itself on understanding how to provide the best supports for each individual we serve.
Our focus is on the person so they can choose the life they want. Their personal choices related to work, housing, socialization and recreation are just that – their choices.
We are committed to our mission of providing full community life for people with disabilities. Our mission has been an unwavering pledge; especially during these last several years of significant change. The steady stream of transformation has been challenging for providers as long-time systems are being evaluated and modified to deliver more integrated services and supports. These changes, emphasizing home-and community-based services, are at the core of what we do.
Our residential, community integration, day, community development services, supported employment and supported retirement programs all focus on incorporating community ties. As we move deeper into our transformation, we become more aware of our role in the lives of those we support. We are advocates – advocates for change! It’s inspiring to see how impactful person-centered supports are for each and every individual served by The Arc of Howard County. Day in and day out, more and more opportunities are unveiled for people with disabilities to live fully integrated and productive lives in the communities of their choice.

Cristina Meza and Raven Cato are the epitome of two people whose dreams are to make the most of every experience they choose to enjoy in their day-to-day lives. Cristina and Raven receive supports through The Arc of Howard County’s Com-munity Integration Services program. The two gregarious young ladies have been best friends since their paths initially crossed at Mt. Hebron High School where they were both working on obtaining their high school certificates. Cristina came to The Arc of Howard County in 2014 to receive day services; Raven began services in 2017. The two best friends have been making the most of the time they spend together exploring the community and participating in various activities.
Both young women love being active and the Community Integration Services program offered by The Arc, is well suited for their likes and desires. “I love doing the flower arranging and then taking the flowers to people and making their day happy,” says Cristina.
Raven enjoys working on her math skills and puzzles along with the many activities she participates in during the course of the week. “I really like to go to Meals on Wheels and pass out food to everyone. I love going to the library and playing on the computer too,” she adds.
Cristina and Raven volunteer at Success in Style in Laurel, where they help to sort clothes for consumers in need of dress attire for interviews. This volunteer activity is one that is especially fun for Cristina as she is very organized and likes to keep things neat and orderly.
Cristina and Raven are both very active in Special Olympics, playing softball, soccer, basketball and bowling. They also share an affection for the theater and look for-ward to attending their Community Connections program at Howard Community College.
As The Arc of Howard County continues to expand its services in the area of Community Integration, Cristina, Raven and others will benefit greatly from the person-centered supports The Arc of Howard County provides.
Mike Lewis, General Manager for Ourisman, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram of Clarksville is a longtime friend of The Arc of Howard County. He serves on The Arc Board, several committees, and sponsors our events. However, if you ask Mike what he is most proud of, he will tell you it is supporting David Gold’s dream of gainful employment. David Gold has worked as a service technician at Ourisman for over four years. David LOVES his job – greeting the customers, putting down floor mats and plastic covers when cars come in for service and helping out wherever and whenever he can. David works five days a week. He never misses a day. He has become part of the Ourisman team, and as Mike Lewis tells it, David knows where everyone is at any given time during the day. Pervicia Hudson-Ajewole; David’s direct support manager, says she sees a big change in David over the last several years. Since gaining steady employment, David is “healthier, happier and definitely
more social”, says Pervicia. David feels empowered by being a productive member of society. He has not only grown into the job, but has
risen to the expectations of the business. His hard work and dedication to Ourisman was recognized last
September when David was named Employee of the Month!

Matthew Martin-Swint has been working for Howard County Government in the Department of Planning and Zoning since January of 2017. Matthew was a member of the 2017 Project SEARCH Howard Class. Traditionally students in the Project SEARCH Howard class complete three rotations throughout the school year with the hope of paid employment once they finish the program. Matthew did such a wonderful job in his first rotation internship at Planning and Zoning, they offered him a paid position! Matthew completed the rest of the Project SEARCH Howard program, but not as an intern; he did so as a paid Howard County employee, where he continues to work today as a Document Conversion Technician.
During his time at Project SEARCH Howard, Matthew was a leader, and some-one his other classmates respected. One day, one of the interns was nervous and voiced that he felt he should have stayed in a different program. Matthew’s response was simple and supportive, “Don’t worry, we got you”. While he comes off cool, calm, and collected, Matthew is thoughtful and always strives to do his best. Matthew is currently working on his goal of getting his driver’s license. He passed his permit test and is now on the road, logging hours. He dreams that someday he will be the one transporting himself to and from work and to all of his daily activities. Mat-thew also dreams of living on his own with roommates. The sky is the limit for Matthew and he is reaching for the moon!
Growing up on a farm, Bonnie Miles always enjoyed the simple things in life and she still does. One of those simple pleasures, that we often take for granted, is living in a home with friends or family. For over 17 years, Bonnie has been in the residential program with The Arc of Howard County. She shares her home with three roommates and her Direct Support Manager, Chantal Bouazo.
With the help of Chantal, Bonnie enjoys cooking. Some of the classic meals she likes to make are mashed potatoes, baked chicken and macaroni and cheese. She enjoys sitting on the porch, watching all the natural happenings in her beautiful front yard. Often, Bonnie goes out with friends to restaurants, baseball games, or to local attractions like the National Aquarium.
Bonnie also volunteers five days a week at Morningside Senior Assisted Living where she has worked for many years. Bonnie assists in the laundry where she washes, dries and delivers the folded clothing to the senior residents who are always happy to see Bonnie’s friendly face.
Many evenings you will find Bonnie talking with her house mates while on the couch watching a little television, or sitting at the kitchen table doing her all-time favorite activity, which is coloring in her coloring books. Bonnie’s dream of living in a beautiful home with friends, who have become family, has come true with the support of The Arc of Howard County!
