This Wills Week we need your help to educate all Queenslanders over 18 on the importance of having a valid and up-to-date Will.

This kit provides you with everything you need to help spread the word during this year’s Wills Week, which is being held between 31 August – 8 September 2019.

Wills Week is important as it not only raises awareness about the significance of having a Will, but it symbolises the crucial community work that the Public Trustee does. The Public Trustee has been making Wills at no cost to Queenslanders since 1916.

While many people may have a Will, they neglect to update it throughout various life stages, such as entering a de facto relationship, marriage, divorce, birth of a child etc. A valid and up-to-date Will ensures a person’s wishes are known and that their assets are transferred to beneficiaries in an orderly manner during a time of grief and loss.

Thank you for getting involved and being a part of this crucial campaign.

How you can helpThere are several ways you can help support Queensland Wills Week:

2019 Queensland Wills Week 31 August – 8 September

The Public Trustee is hosting Queensland Wills Week again this year to raise awareness about the importance of having a valid and up-to-date will.

This year’s event will be held from Saturday 31 August to Sunday 8 September with a host of events around the State.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said Wills Week was an important event, and succession law practitioners across Queensland were being encouraged to host an event or community education session in their local community.

“ At the end of the day, we just want Queenslanders to make a will, and we want to spread the word that wills are important,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“ If you die without a will, your estate may not be distributed to your beneficiaries in the way you would wish.

“ Dying without a will can also place a burden on your family and loved ones”.

Many people were not aware that a will could become invalid and that it should be updated with events such as getting married, entering a de facto relationship, divorce, birth of a child or grandchild, and changes to your assets.

By preparing a will and ensuring it is up to date, people could save their family time and money during what can often be a period of grief and loss.

The Public Trustee is holding events in 15 regions across the state to make people aware of this important issue.

Mrs D’Ath said that as a provider of estate and financial administration services to the Queensland community, the Public Trustee gave back more than $35 million annually in community service obligations.

This included rebated fees for those not in a financial position to pay the Public Trustee’s fees, and public education around future planning and support for elder abuse prevention.

“ The Public Trustee makes thousands of Wills for Queenslanders each year as part of their free will-making service,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“ They have a network of offices across the state, and you are not required to appoint them as your executor.

“So there’s really no excuse not to have a valid Will,” she said.

About us The Public Trustee 2019

1916 At the height of the first World War the government of the day unanimously votes to create Queensland’s first Public Curator to make Wills for Queenslanders.

The new Brisbane Office begins with a handful of staff and Mr W.A. Douglas, the first Public Curator at the Treasury Building. Offices also open in Townsville and Rockhampton.

1918 The end of World War One. The Reserve Fund was established to provide funds “to make good any losses (should that unfortunately happen at any time) before the Government will be called upon to honour its guarantee.”

1926 Public Curator Act is amended and a Deputy Public Curator is based in Cairns.

1932 The Brisbane Office relocates to a new building in Edward Street. When Public Curator F.W. Mole retires in his address to the Queensland Parliament he says “The Office continues to pay its way and never has been since its inception a charge on the general revenue of the State.”

1939 The Public Trustee supports the war effort with evening and weekend opening times during World War Two.

1945 World War Two ends and staff volunteer weekends to help dismantle the air-raid protection that was built around the Brisbane Office. Many returned service people are employed by the office and the staff actively contribute to post war recovery efforts.

1964 The Mental Health Act 1962 changes the Public Curator’s role to take control only when mentally ill persons are certified as being incapable of managing their own affairs.

1978 Public Trustee Act 1978 replaces all earlier Acts, and changes the name from The Public Curator to The Public Trustee.

1997 The Queensland Community Foundation is established, with The Hon. Mike Ahern chairing the Advi sory Board, allowing individuals, groups and organisations to establish charitable trusts for a cause or charity of their choice.

2000 Guardianship and Administration Act 2000 makes significant changes to how we support our disability clients.

2016 The Public Trustee celebrated 100 years of self funded services to Queenslanders. The introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme to revolutionise the way services are provided to people with a disability.
