Through the generosity of a $5 million grant from TheHarvey L. Miller Family Foundation, the Jacki and BruceBarron Cancer Research Scholars’ Program has been established to further the cause of groundbreaking research to eradicate cancer.

This exciting collaborative effort between the Israel Cancer Research Fund and the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California will advance scientificunderstanding of cancer and the development of life-saving therapies, novel diagnostic approaches andprevention strategies by leveraging the research, knowledge, expertise and shared resources between cancer investigators in the United States and Israel.

City of Hope, a world renown cancer treatment and research campus just outside of Los Angeles, is a pioneerin the fields of bone marrow transplantation and genetics,and an independent research and treatment center forcancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases. Designated as a “comprehensive cancer center,” City ofHope is also a founding member of the National Compre-hensive Cancer Network, and has pioneered research andtreatment protocols that advance cancer care nationwide.

Exciting movement in the future of conquering cancerwill include the following program initiatives:

• Awarding of collaborative grants to City of Hope andIsraeli scientists to support basic, translational andclinical research;

• Offering promising young Israeli scientists post-doctoral training at City of Hope;

• Funding sabbaticals for Israeli scientists at City ofHope and for City of Hope investigators in Israel;

• Establishing an annual symposium for researchersfrom the United States and Israel to share their ideasand research discoveries.

The program is named in honor of Jacki and Bruce Barron, Chicago philanthropists who generously supportICRF. The Harvey L. Miller Family Foundation is a generous supporter of both. Miller’s vision in helping toadvance cancer treatment is evidenced by the establishment of The Miller Family Translational Technologies Center at City of Hope. Established in 2008,the center has helped investigators develop several firstin-human clinical trials for hematologic cancers.

“The Israel Cancer Research Fund is thrilled about this inspiring and transformative grant,” said Bradley Goldhar, President of ICRF. “We are very grateful to TheHarvey L. ICRF is celebrating its 40th Anniversary – 40years of hard-won progress in the fightagainst cancer, the scourge of humankind.There is no better time to announce the formation of The Promised Land Fund, an initiative that can transform the face of cancerresearch in Israel.

ICRF’s goal is to secure at least 40 donorsacross North America willing to pledge

$40,000; payable over the next four years.Half of those proceeds will be used to fund theICRF Acceleration Grants Program, whichsupports new, highly-innovative approachesto cancer biology and therapeutics. The otherhalf will be used to help ICRF increase its capacity to raise more research dollars to support more deserving scientists.

The Promised Land Fund was launched on

June 9th, 2016, with a cocktail reception at theelegant Park Avenue offices of Angelo-Gordonand Company. Hosted by the firm’s founder,Michael Gordon, a long-time friend of ICRF,the guests were privileged to meet one ofICRF’s most distinguished cancer researchscientists, Prof. Yehudit Bergman of HebrewUniversity/Hadassah Medical School, who gavean interesting and informative presentationabout her work.

The pace of discovery in cancer research isquickening. Every day brings news of importantprogress. We believe the day is in sight whenall cancer patients and their families, regardlessof diagnosis, will have genuine hope for a cure. With your help, we will get there and givemore families the greatest gift of all – moretime together. Please join us.

Financial Services Sector Meets ICRF“Members of the Financial Services industry wantto help save the world like people in any other industry. However, they do not usually get that feeling at work, the way a doctor, nurse or teacherdoes. Our industry has a compensation structuresecond to none, with a donor solicitation rate tomatch. Therefore, when our members look to donate their philanthropic dollars, they often use thesame analytics as they use in business to assessrisk/reward and to assure that their philanthropic resources achieve maximum benefit. Israel has, arguably, some of the best researchers in the world,and their work is done at a fraction of the cost of

most world class research facilities. The researchgrant proposal process employed by ICRF, hasproven to be an excellent vehicle to allocate resources to the best research proposals, withamazing results. This is why I believe members ofour industry will be generous donors to ICRF oncethey are exposed to the organization. I look forwardto speaking with anyone in our industry (or outside)who wishes to learn more and to become involvedin helping find the cures for cancer.” -Steven Hirsch

Prof. Yehudit Bergman discusses her research at anICRF Financial Services Sector breakfast meeting

Since the 1960’s, scientists have been reprogramming adult cells into embryonicones, from tadpoles used to generate frogs, tothe creation of Dolly the sheep in 1996. Andthroughout this time, the medical communityhas recognized the potential to reprogram embryonic stem cells into cells designed to attack specific diseases.

The problem is that up until now it has not beendetermined exactly how the reprogrammingprocess works. However, this is beginning tochange thanks to Dr. Jacob Hanna, a youngPalestinian-Israeli researcher who heads a labin the Department of Molecular Genetics at theWeizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot. Hisbreakthrough is nicknamed the ChanukahProject because his team found a way to reprogram human skin cells into inducedpluripotent stem cells (or iPS) in just eightdays. Like embryonic cells, iPS cells are essentially a blank slate that can be reprogrammed into medically-useful cells. Butmore importantly, nearly 100 percent of thecells reprogram successfully, and they do it insync with one another.

Dr. Hanna, 36, was born and raised in Rama,an Arab village in the Galilee. He received anM.D. and Ph.D. from the Hebrew University ofJerusalem, and did postdoctoral work at Massachusetts Institute of Technology beforereturning to Israel in 2011 to head his lab atWeizmann. For six years he has received Career Development Awards, ICRF grants foryoung researchers.

Why is the ability to create iPS cells important?

We don’t want to take cells from donor embryos because there are some ethical issues. But more importantly, the DNA in anembryo is not identical to that of a patient. IfiPS cells are made from a patient’s own skinor blood cells that eliminates problems, likewaiting on a donor list or needing to suppressthe immune system to prevent the cells frombeing rejected.

What are the potential medical uses for iPS cells?

There are two important applications of these patient-specific stem cells. One is replacing bodyparts. We’ll be able to take adult cells, reprogramthem into stem cells and then reprogram thestem cells into whatever cells we need to replacewhatever tissue we want. This will have implications for treating Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, muscular dystrophy or even infertility.

The second application is to have relevanthuman material to study diseases. We can goto a patient that has a genetic disease with aspecific genetic mutation, take a drop of bloodand make iPS cells that have the same mutation that the patient has. We can begin

to ask, “Why is that disease starting? Why arethe cells becoming tumorigenic?

What was your path to becoming a principalinvestigator at the Weizmann?

When I was postdoc in the U.S. and part of thestem cell team at MIT, I realized that doing thistype of research was very costly. I reallywanted to start my own lab in Israel but wassure it would be impossible to get enoughfunding. Fortunately, Weizmann Institute approached me with start-up funding for anew lab, and then I was able to secure fundingfrom ICRF in the form of Research Career Development Awards for young scientists.The ICRF grants have really kept me goingover the last five years. These grants are soimportant when starting out.

Tell me about your lab and the people whowork there.

We now have 15 people; a big lab for Israel.We are very diverse, with nine graduate students and five staff scientists who are moresenior. The staff scientists and I are dedicatedto teaching the students and working withthem to run projects. So it is like a small,tightly organized army commando unit. Youend up doing different science than you mayhave thought about before because everyonehas different expertise. We now have an Austrian with a Turkish student on the way,two Russians and others are from Israel. Wehave four Palestinian Israelis, including me. Itis a very nice mix of people. I enjoy that a lot.

Hartford, CT Women Raise Funds in a Paint Party Outing -- SpeakerDr. Henry Smilowitz of UCONN and ICRF's Scientific Review Panel

On a mild afternoon during Chanukah, a group of emerging "artists"gathered in West Hartford to hear from Dr. Henry Smilowitz, of UCONNHealth, Associate Professor, Dept of Cell Biology, who offered an enlightening overview of cancer solution investigations. Followinglunch, the women engaged in step-by-step painting instructions to create a Tree of Life.

Dr. Smilowitz recently completed his term on the ICRF Scientific Review Panel, a group of over 40 renowned scientists from the US andCanada who volunteer their time for a period of three years to annuallyevaluate ICRF's research grant proposals. This vetting model is similarto that implemented by the US’s National Institutes of Health, ensuringobjectivity and fairness, and allowing the most promising proposals toemerge. The disappointment is that there are inevitably more excellentproposals than there are funds available to support them, raising thespecter that the one proposal we weren't able to fund may have provided the answer that we seek.
