Program Description The surgical technology program is a year-long (excluding core), full-time, day program offered on the Tifton Campus.

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals, who are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. They are individuals with specialized education who function as members of the surgical team in the role of scrub person.

Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions thatmaximize patient safety.

Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

After graduation, you will be eligible to sit for the national certification exam offered through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting and become a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) which allows you to practice in any state.

EmploymentOpportunities: Surgical technologists may work in hospital surgical

suites, out-patient surgical clinics and surgeons’ offices.

Job Placement: 95-100% of MTC’s surgical technology graduates are employed in field. Demand is currently exceeding supply.

Salary: The average starting hourly salary in our service area for an entry-level surgical technologist is $12.00 – 13.00/hour. Most surgical technologists will earn more by receiving on-call pay, call-back pay and overtime.

Advancements in the Field: Varies depending on place of employment. With additional education and training, some surgical technologists function in the role of surgical first assistant.

Additional Program RequirementsClinicals: Offered fall, spring and summer terms after completion of program pre-

requisites. Completed in area hospitals.

Pre-clinical requirements: Health screening including physical exam, lab work, TB skin test, and various immunizations Students are also required to submit to a random drug/alcohol screen and criminal background review. These requirements are completed during fall term. Not covered by financial aid. Note: the required tests/screens are valid for one year only.

Certification Fees: $190 - $290

Uniforms: $100-$150 - purchase by summer term. Not covered by financial aid.

Travel expenses: Students will be required to use personal transportation to clinical sites in addition to the daily travel to and from class.

When should core courses be completed? Prior to the beginning of program courses each summer term.

Frequently Asked Questions What if I fail a course in the middle of the program? Do I have to start back from the beginning?

No. You have to wait one year until the course is offered again and exempt exams may be required depending on where you left off in the curriculum.

Will I participate in “real” surgery during my clinical rotations? Yes, you will scrub in for “real” surgery with “real” patients and “real” surgeons.

What if I don’t like the sight of blood and guts and/or find some body odors offensive?Surgical technology may not be the career choice for you since participation in surgery will expose you to blood, internal body organs, and unpleasant odors.

Do I have to work in a operating room upon graduation?No. You can also seek employment in a out-patient surgical clinic, a surgeon’s office, and even work as a medical company representative or surgical technology educator.

If I become certified does my certification cover me state to state? Yes, the certification that is offered through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting is a national certification that is accepted in all states.
