Surrealism Definition

- A style of art and literature developed principally in the 20th century, stressing the subconscious or nonrational significance of imagery arrived at by automatism or the exploitation of chance effects, unexpected juxtapositions, etc.

The History of Surealism- Surealism started in the late 1910’s and early 20’s- It started as a literary movement that experimented with

a new model of expression.- Surealism became an international intelectual and

political movemenet.- Surrealism was not suported as a visual art untill 1925- In America Surrealism was declared dead and has been

described as such in all art history books since 1941- The Surrealist movemnet gained momentum after the

dada movemenet. It was lead by Andre Breton.

Impact of Surrealism

- Many significant literary movements in the later 20th century was directly or indirectly influenced by Surrealism.

- The Surrealist movement influenced artist with painting and sculpture to pop music and film directing.

The Surrealism Golden Age- Throughout the 1930s, Surrealism continued to become

more visible to the public at large.- Surrealist groups started to develop in all major cities in

the 1930’s- Surrealism as a visual movement was ment to expose

psychological truth using ordinary objects and altering them, in order to create a compelling image that was beyond ordinary in order to evoke empathy from the viewer.

- Two of the most famouse surealism artists are Dalí and Magritte

Dali

- Dalí was highly imaginative, and also had an affinity for unusual artwork.

- His eccentric manner and attention-grabbing public actions sometimes drew more attention than his artwork.

- Symbolism is very popular in his artwork

Magritte

- Contemporary artists have been greatly influenced by René Magritte's stimulating examination of the fickleness of image

- In the 1960s there was a great increase in public awareness of Magritte's work

- Magritte points out that no matter how closely, through realism-art, we come to depicting an item accurately, we never do catch the item itself.
