Sustainability vision

Sustainability is one of UNSW’s guiding principles. This means sustainability needs

to be embedded into the University’s management and leadership.

UNSW Sustainability Office goals > Assess, report & benchmark UNSW’s position. Establish where we are and where

we want to be with respect to sustainability.> Create a Sustainability Strategy to integrate and embed sustainability principles

across all operational functions of the University.> Contribute toward project plans for developments and capital works projects.> Position and promote UNSW as a University renown campus sustainability

initiatives, helping to make UNSW a destination of choice for the best staff and students, while distinguishing the University from our competitors.

> Support and promote existing UNSW sustainability initiatives.> Establish UNSW as a leader in sustainability nationally and internationally.

Waste & recycling

Waste Management Strategy> Develop targets and strategies to reduce waste & increase recycling.> Contribute to the preparation and evaluation of a comprehensive Waste Tender.> Promote existing recycling, reuse and waste reduction initiatives.> Educate the campus community about what can be recycled on campus.> Work with campus retail outlets to reduce waste.

Reverse Vending Machines > Machines ordered to be placed in:

> The Roundhouse > The Kensington Colleges > Food Fair (Upper Campus Food Court) > Eora Lounge> UNSW Climate Change Adaptation Centre.

> Accept empty drink containers.> Eliminate contamination. Material 100% recyclable.> Reduces cleaning costs - An average wheelie bin holds between

100 & 150 containers. Reverse Vending Machines hold 3,000 crushed containers = 25 wheelie bins.

> Give users vouchers & prizes as incentives to recycle.

UNSW machines to be “skinned” with UNSW & sustainability logo.

Recycling paper and cardboard makes UNSW $60,000 per year.

Reduce campus waste Disposable coffee cups can’t be recycled. UNSW takes more than 5,000 of these a day to landfill.

Bike Hubs> A secure bike parking facility with lockers and showers for cyclist. > Take the space of 2-3 car-parking places. Accommodate 28 bikes.> Cost approximately $100,000 plus services connections, depending on position of the hubs. > Could include duress points and safety lighting. > Provisional FM CAPEX budget approval. Arranging quotes from suppliers and identifying locations.
