For SCHELL, economic success and a respectful approach to nature have always been aspects of corporate philosophy, long before the subject of sustainability became a hotly discussed topic. A challenge that we still wish to meet even in the era of globalisation. On the one hand, with intelligent fittings technology that save water, set hygiene standards and efficiently use energy to heat hot water.
On the other hand, with longlasting products, for which we always integrate resourcefriendly processes during their production. This includes our brass fittings which are almost fully recyclable and can be reintegrated in the raw material cycle.
So you can see: If SCHELL is on the outside, there's sustainability on the inside. That's a promise.
Get to know us from our green side.Sustainability – the most natural thing in the world for SCHELL.
And has been the case for over 80 years. Ultimately, Hubert Schell founded a company not just anywhere, but in the middle of the Sauerland Olpe region. Surrounded by grassland, forest and numerous waterways. This rubs off in the best sense.

We provide space for sustainability. And that is with intelligent »Made in Germany« fitting technology.
The fact that the United Nations made 2008 the »Year of Sanitation« shows how important the topic of sanitary installation has become across the globe. It's not surprising. Water consumption alone has sextupled since 1950. Intelligent fitting technologies from SCHELL offer enormous potential for sustainable solutions – in private and particularly in public, semipublic
and commercial sanitary rooms. Special conditions prevail here. This includes other user behaviour, increased hygiene requirements and the risk of vandalism. With SCHELL, you are and will be best prepared.

SCHELL fittings can also be controlled without having to be touched. This not only saves water but also improves the hygiene in public sanitary rooms. And thus sustainably.
Apropos:
10
In Germany alone, 80 % of drinking water is used for sanitary purposes. This is reason enough for SCHELL to develop watersaving technologies, which show their effect where sensitivity towards water saving has shown to be at its lowest: in public, semipublic and commercial sanitary rooms. Whether it be, for example, in the shower area at sports facilities, toilets in motorway service stations or in wash rooms at nurseries.
Our fittings do the thinking too and quasi assume the responsibility for saving water. This is done by the fittings, e.g. starting automatically, limiting the maximum flow, stopping on a timecontrolled
based and actively adapt to the user frequency. In comparison to conventional fittings, a saving of approximately 33 % can be made for WC usage and up to 65 % for hand washing.
Making savings with SCHELL does not mean compromising on other aspects. Our technological solutions are sophisticated to such an extent that neither function nor convenience are restricted.
Does this sound promising? Discover how we honour this promise in reality on the following pages.
Sustainability means for us: reducing water consumption – not convenience.

Wash basin fittings, controlled contact-free
Equipped with an infrared sensor, these control the flow of water on a demandbasis and contactfree. Due to their means of operation, a saving of up to 65 % of precious water can be made.
Wash basin fittings, self-closing
Selfclosing fittings by SCHELL restrict the duration of water delivery and save an enormous amount of water be it using piezoelectric technology with an adjustable flow time or via cartridge technology with adjustable flow time. The flow rate quantities are limited to max. 6 l/min on both designs.
Wash basin fittings, single-lever
Mechanical singlelever fittings are designed for reliable, continuous operation and are equipped with a selfregulating economy spray regulator, which limits the water flow rate to 6 l/min irrespective of the pressure.

Regulating angle valves
Water consumption can be easily reduced by up to 40 % with no loss of convenience using an optional, regulated angle valve.
Wall-mounted draw-off fittings
Wallmounted drawoff fittings can be used in a variety of situations. All SCHELL solutions – whether selfclosing or singlelever variants – are convincing thanks to their integrated watersaving spray regulator and water flow rate between 5 and 6 l/min (depending on the design) irrespective of pressure.

Shower fittings
Apart from toilets, showers are one of the largest water consumers in sanitary rooms. To satisfy even the most conflicting requirements, SCHELL provides a multitude of watersaving shower fittings, optionally with a selfclosing function or with an electronic sensory button. The »Shower Control Eco« function has proven to be particularly water efficient.
By using a radar sensor behindthe safety glass, the functionalso has the demandled featureof monitoring the shower areaand switching off the water flow in the event of the user leavingthe shower area before the set flow time has lapsed. When used with the corresponding SCHELL shower head, the water flowrate is restricted to 9 l/min.

WC flush valves
Be it a wallmounted or concealed design you choose, intelligent WC flush valves from SCHELL make a major contribution towards reducing water consumption. Depending on the design, consumption per flush can be reduced to 3 l or by up to 33 % thanks to the dual flush feature.
Urinal flush valves
SCHELL can provide a wide range of watersaving solutions with its wallmounted and concealed urinal flush valves. The flush valves can be actuated manually or via infrared sensor. The flush volume can be restricted to 1 to 6 litres depending on the design. Additionally, »stadium operation« enables the flush program to save water depending on the frequency of use.

For us, sustainability means: regulating the hot water supply as required – and, thus, indirectly reducing CO2 emissions.
Conserving water is good. Conserving hot water is even better. The provision of 1 m³ of hot water requires 34.8 kWh of energy and is thus 87times higher than for 1 m³ cold water. It is even more crucial to only use hot water when it is actually required.
With its intelligent fittings technology, SCHELL is offering numerous possibilities to regulate the supply of hot water on an ondemand basis and is indirectly and sustainably reducing CO2 emissions, which arise when heating cold water.
The following examples explain how this is done.
SCHELL provides solutions for thermally disinfecting the complete pipe system. Thereby, water heated to 70 °C eradicates dangerous legionella bacteria. And this is carried out reliably and completely without adding any chemicals to the water. Sustainability has many facets.
Talking of hot water:
18
Presence-sensing shower water controls
Hotwater flow times in showers can be adapted to suit the most diverse of requirements posed by public sanitary rooms thanks to SCHELL fittings. The LINUS ECO shower fitting automatically stops the flow of water as soon as the user leaves the shower area, thanks to a room control function.

Demand-based regulation of hot and cold water
To reduce water and energyconsuming adjustments required to have water at the ideal temperature on opening singlelever fittings, the volume flows of cold and hot water can be adjusted separately thanks to SCHELL angle valves.
Limiting the hot-water temperature
The anglevalve thermostat from SCHELL is not only a reliable, easy toinstall and visually attractive solution for scald protection, it can limit the temperature at the drawoff outlet to save energy – irrespective of pressure fluctuations.

Sustainability means for us: Longlife and recyclable products »Made in Germany«.
Fittings in public, semipublic and commercial sanitary rooms are tested tot the limit on a daily basis: be it due to the high frequency of users, inattentiveness of users or contact with a variety of cleaning agents. Sustainability can only be achieved here with the nocompromise »Made in Germany« quality.
For this reason, SCHELL insists on using topquality allmetal materials and on a design that will guarantee long operating lives and the best protection in the event of any vandalism. Long life is also provided by, e.g. the highstrength plastic cartridges on the inside, that provide a constant, troublefree flow of water, due to less expendable parts.
Our products and processes are continuously tested and are distinguished by the relevant quality and safety features: An example of this is quality management at SCHELL, which is certified by Germanischer Lloyd in accordance with DIN EN IS 9001:2008.
It is the attention to detail that gives SCHELL products a long service life. This also includes product design typical of SCHELL: functional and multiaward winning. This is because experience has proven that the more attractive the fitting design, the higher the threshold for vandalism.
Everything that SCHELL does to maintain sustainability is shown here in some further examples.
Even SCHELL fittings have to be replaced at some point. In such cases, it is guaranteed that old products will be collected by the plumber for recycling purposes.

Not going to waste at SCHELL: Brass swarf and burrs
Processes that save resources and optimized use of material
SCHELL represents fittings technology »Made in Germany«. To be more precise: »Made in Olpe«. And you can our word for it. As all our production processes take place in both our plants in the Sauerland. This saves us considerably in terms of logistics costs and helps nature by preventing avoidable environmental damage. Also selfevident for us as the resourcesaving use of materials. An example of this is the fact that all brass swarf and burr from the production processes are collected and returned to the brass manufacturer.
Protection from destructive contamination of water
Particles can always enter the fittings or domestic appliances through drinking water and these can cause expensive damage in the long term. This can be easily prevented by using SCHELL filter angle valves specifically developed for this purpose.
Use of materials suitable for drinking water
As a manufacturer of fittings, it is simply a matter of course that we pursue a conscientious approach when using the resource of drinking water. Therefore we only use materials suitable for drinking water. SCHELL fittings conform to internationally required inspection and quality standards. These include the drinking water ordinance applicable in Germany (TrinkwV 2000), DIN 50930 Section 6, DIN EN 1717 as well as the KTW recommendations (relating to the use of plastics with drinking water) and the DIN of DVGW (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water).

For us, sustainability means: providing innovative answers to questions relating to hygiene in sanitary rooms.
Achieving adequate sanitary room hygiene is very challenging irrespective of the sanitary room being in a hospital, residential nursing home or school or similar objects. This is due to either the sanitary system not being used continually or because the risk of transfer of germs should be avoided as best possible.
Contact-free control of sanitary fittings
Many SCHELL fittings have contactfree controls. Not only does this save water, it also improves the hygiene in highuse sanitary rooms. And thus sustainably.
Use of materials suitable for drinking water
Drinking water is the most important victual for humans. It is even more important that this increasingly scarce resource is used responsibly. This is the reason why SCHELL solely uses materials suitable for contact with drinking water, which do not change the water's composition. Our quality fittings meet all the requirements specified in TrinkwV 2000 (drinking water ordinance), DIN 50930 Section 6, DIN EN 1717 and KTW (recommendations for plastics that come into contact with drinking water).
Brass blanks
A challenging task, that SCHELL has been committed to for many years. It's not surprising that across the world we are regarded as one of the pioneers of technical solutions, which predominantly share the objective of protecting the health of users and preventing followon costs arising from poor hygiene. How does this work? Here are a few examples.
26
Stagnation flush
The selectable stagnation flush in electronically controlled wash basin fittings makes a major contribution towards hygiene in all objects that are not in use for longer periods, e.g. during school holidays. This is due to the fittings triggering a flow of water for approximately 20 seconds every 24 hours after the last use to prevent water stagnating in the pipelines.
Urinal control EDITION Solenoid valve for thermal disinfection
Legionella flush
SCHELL offers a legionella flush with almost all electronically controlled wash basin fittings with mixed water function. A flow of water heated to 70 °C eradicates dangerous legionella bacteria. And this is carried out reliably and completely without adding any chemicals to the water. Of course these fittings fulfill the requirements in accordance with worksheet W551 of the DVGW (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water).
Many people continue to believe that infections are mainly transmitted through the air (e. g. by sneezing) However, the fact is: Generally, they are transmitted via your hands. Yet another reason for choosing the sustainable solutions by SCHELL.
