Solving Our Problems

• For years, we’ve relied on gasoline

• Only 50 years remaining in our ground

• Solar Energy• Wind Power• Water • Biofuels

Page 3: Sustainability of Technology

What are the most important things in your life?

• Personal/state of mind/spiritual expectations– Enjoy my life

• Social life: immediate circle of friends/family– Dad builds swimming pools w/ a stay at home mom– Many siblings including 3 and 5 year old sisters

• Material life:– Live comfortably

• Work/occupation– Looking to major in electrical engineering

• Recreation/avocation– Sports, played lacrosse in high school

• Political life: local, national, global– Not really political

Biofuels• Sustainable

– Never ending supply• Fewer emissions of carbon

dioxide• Biodegradable materials

– Spills are less harmful• Use of waste

– Biodiesel uses old cooking oil

• Less harmful harvesting– No more drilling or mining

What are the most important things you want in your life?

• A) personal/state of mind/spiritual expectations• Calm, peaceful, and satisfying life

• B) social life: immediate circle of friends/family• Both my parents work for AT&T in different areas as engineers• My elder sister works for GE Healthcare on cardiac devices as an

engineer• D) work / occupation

• devices that integrate with human muscle, skeleton, and nervous systems

• Prosthetics, neural microimplants, biosensors• E) recreation / avocation

• Travelling, enjoying the outdoors, listening to music, watching movies

Hydro-powereda) Conventional hydroelectricity

- Uses flowing water to turn a turbine that takes the kinetic energy and converts to mechanical energy

- The generator that is connected to the turbine takes the mechanical energy and converts to electrical energy

b) Wave Power- extracts energy

directly from surface waves or from pressure fluctuations below

the surface.- same conversion of

energy as conventional use

Page 7: Sustainability of Technology

• A)personal/state of mind/spiritual expectations• Friendly, peaceful, trying to understand all problems I face, and

being optimistic in my life • B) social life: immediate circle of friends/family• My father is a civil engineer works for Oman Army.• My older brother just graduated as an architecture engineer • My older sister works for Oman Army also as a quantity

surveyor.• I Have many friends from different countries.

• D) work / occupation• Building structures, bridges, and roads. (civil engineering)

• E) recreation / avocation• Travelling, swimming, soccer (Real Madrid), and video games

What are the most important things you want in your life?

Solar powered •The sun sends photons by its light to the solar cells.•The photons give energy to electrons.•By the movement of electrons, electricity is generated.•With this kind of power we can have a cleaner planet and sustainable energy.

What are the most important things you want in your life?

• A) Personal / State of Mind / Spiritual Expectations• I want to be happy and successful, satisfied with my life and more involved with my religion

• B) Social Life: Immediate Circle of Friends/Family• Family is the most important thing to me- I hope to remain close to them• I want to have some close friends that I know I can always trust

• C) Material Life• I also strive to be financially comfortable. Comfortable enough to live a stress free life.• I’d like to own a practical and reliable vehicle yet something sharp looking. I'm not wishing for an Alfa

Romero or anything like that. I also would like a nice, newer house problem free, and decently spacious.• D) Work / Occupation

• I wish to be successful and happy in whatever it is I do. I am undecided. I would like a decent work load and for it to be somewhat challenging yet not life consuming.

• E) Recreation / Avocation• I’d like to be able to spend time leisurely and to be able to afford to go on vacations and do fun things

occasionally without financial stress• F) Political Life: Local, National, Global

• World Peace

Alternative Energy Sources: Wind• What is wind?

– Wind is air in motion• Wind is a renewable energy source

– Wind energy can be used to make electricity

– As long as the sun shines, there will be wind• This is due to the uneven heating of

of the earth’s surface by the sun• Wind power plants, or wind farms, are clusters

of wind turbines used to produce electricity– Wind farm construction is difficult and

expensive, especially underwater– However, the energy source of wind is free

and infinite unlike that of oil or other natural resources

– As opposed to other energy sources, wind energy also produces no pollution
