Shortcomings in Implementing an EMS in a Public University

In July 2008, theUNISON has become the first public highereducation institution to get the ISO14001:2004 certification notonly in Mexico but also in Latin America.

    UNISONs ISO14001-based SMS

Shortcomings in Implementing an EMS in a Public University

In order to become a sustainable university, the

University of Sonora has implemented aSustainability Management System rather than anEnvironmental Management System. This SMS

was certified in July 2008 by a third-party auditfirm. It is too soon to claim sustainabilityimprovements derived for the SMS

implementation; yet, quantitative indicators showimprovements in environmental and culturalissues

    RemarksRemarks

9The substantives functions of education, research, and outreach and partnershiphave been redesigned in order to besupportive and integrative and play a key

and role for the success of sustainability

    initiatives.

    RemarksRemarks

There is big difference between an EMSimplemented in industry with an EMSimplemented on campus, mainly becauseon campus a series of procedures is

worthless if the EMS is not linked with thesubstantives functions of the university, mainly education and research. Student

participation must be duty in any EMS foruniversities.

    RemarksRemarks

9Even though the University ofSonora has been involved

successfully in fosteringsustainability initiatives, it is truethat being a Sustainable

University is still far, far away

    ARE WE THERE, YET?

    NO, not yet!
