On the right track

SUSTAINABILITY is impor-tant for growth in the UAE. Today, there is a growing need to reduce consumption of fos-sil fuels and to signifi cantly decrease the eff ect of green-house gas emissions. Buildings account for 40 per cent of all energy consumption world-wide. Here in the Middle East, that percentage is even higher. In the HVAC industry, there is an increasing interest in Lead-ership in Energy and Environ-mental Design (LEED®), a framework of green building practices and energy effi cient solutions for building owners and designers. “A long standing partner of sustainable building initiatives in the UAE, Carrier is commit-ted to providing energy-effi -cient solutions to the region’s building industry,” says Didier Hardouin, General Manager, UTS Carrier. “Carrier is the right partner for local building developers looking for sustain-able HVAC solutions, backed by technology leadership and industry-leading service ex-pertise.”

Carrier has a strong track re-cord of promoting energy-effi -cient technologies and solu-tions for its building sector customers around the world.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING SOLUTIONS KHALEEJ TIMES / ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT

OVER the last few years, the whole world has united itself in a global campaign aimed at preserv-ing the environment and all its valuable resources. This move showcases the eff orts to achieve total sustainability, further exem-plifi ed by the genuine concern to give future generations a better and safer place to live in. Wishing to play an active role in this cam-paign, Jotun, one of the world’s leading producers and distributors of paints and coatings, has proven true to its commitment of devel-oping and releasing products that not only aim to save the environ-ment but also drive us closer to the ultimate goal of sustainable devel-opment.

To date, Jotun boasts of a wide range of eco-friendly and highly durable products that have become highly preferred across various in-dustry verticals and even in today’s homes. In terms of ultimate exte-rior protection, Jotashield Super-durable, a product featuring a unique silicon binder technology, can provide protection of up to 20

years. Another product, the Jotashield Extreme, is a superior exterior paint that provides ther-mal indoor comfort and a longer-lasting fi nish with superior exterior protection at a competitive price.

The brand has also worked on continuously developing products that are water based — off ering re-duced VOC content and leaves less impact on the environment. Re-sults of this research can be best found in Jotun’s water-based paint

products like Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion and Lady Es-sentials Silk. In addition to this growing range, Jotun has also launched Fenomastic Stain Resis-tant, a newly launched premium interior wall paint that allows users to remove diffi cult stains without aff ecting the paint and making it still look like new. Jotun has also re-launched Fenomastic Hygiene, a superior quality paint that off ers resistance against bacteria and fungi growing on highly humid and wet areas like kitchens, bath-rooms, hospitals, etc.

To help strengthen their eff orts towards the environment, Jotun has also made a move in consoli-dating their sustainability eff orts under a programme called ‘Jotun GreenSteps,’ a fi ve-key focus goal that seeks to ensure its products are better formulated in an eff ort to preserve the world’s resources and keep it more colourful.

These fi ve ‘GreenSteps’ are:Reduction in energy con-• sumption. Reduction of carbon foot-• print. Reduction of waste. • Reduction of solvent or Vola-• tile Organic Compound (VOC). Reduction of hazardous mate-• rials.

These steps are complemented by the company’s aim of operating sustainably. All in all, the imple-mentation of ‘Jotun GreenSteps’ and the zeal to achieve the goals set by this programme, have be-come integral drivers to all new in-novations introduced by Jotun.

The lectures were conducted by members of the EmiratesGBC — experts in the fi eld of sustainability and committed to promoting its importance.

The council members visited schools that have signed up through the EWS-WWF eco-schools programme to discuss with students the various aspects of sustainability such as energy and water use, recycling, and simple measures children can undertake at home and school to promote a

greener environment.Adnan Sharafi, EmiratesGBC

Chairman, said: “The Green Minds School Awareness Cam-paign is a strategic initiative by EmiratesGBC, which underscores our commitment to promote a greener environment. By educat-ing children on the importance of energy effi ciency and recycling, we can encourage them to play more active and responsible roles in promoting green practices — that are simple but eff ective.

“It is extremely important to in-tegrate them into our green initia-

tives as they are our future, and their contribution will make a huge diff erence.”

The World Green Building Week, held in the third week of September each year, creates a window of opportunity to highlight the role of green buildings in achieving a healthier community. This year, 90 nations representing more than 20,000 organisations are expected to participate in the activities under the theme, ‘Green Buildings for Great Communities’, through conferences, tours, edu-cational events and gatherings.
