INSTRUCTIONS

WOOD TURNING

Many wood turners will choose High Lustre for more protection. The higher percentage of Polymerized Tung Oil reduces the number of coats needed and helps control the sheen level.

Helpful Hint!

Original Formula & Botanical Polymerized Tung OilThese two lines are all Polymerized Tung Oil with no resin fortification. The difference in the two formulations is the solvent. The Original Formula is a petroleum solvent and the Botanical is our proprietary citrus solvent, Di-Citrusol™ They can be used interchangeably. The solvent becomes airborne and dissipates leaving the exact same oil in and on the wood. It is more a consideration of what type of solvent you want to work with as a personal preference or an environmental concern.

Wood Turning

Wood PreparationAll wood surfaces should be free of lint, dirt, grease, wax, oil and old paint. If you are refinishing old wood, please make sure to remove any loose old finish. Sand the wood using 220 grit paper. Avoid using higher grits as they close down the wood pores interfering with maximum penetration.

Applicator OptionsRag: Scott® blue paper shop towelsBrush: Natural white china bristle brush (thin coats only)

Cure TestPush finger tips against the grain of the wood. If they glide easily over the surface, you are ready to apply your next coat.

Millie’s All-Purpose Penetrating Tung OilMillie’s is the lowest toxic finish we formulate using our Polymerized Tung Oil Low Lustre, our proprietary citrus solvent, Di-Citrusol™ and beeswax. There are no chemical driers in Millie’s. This is the coating that is most often used for salad bowls or food contact applications or when there is a known sensitivity to petroleum based finishes. The lack of chemical driers in Millie’s allows complete saturation of the wood producing only a matte sheen.

Wiping Varnish The Wiping Varnish is formulated with an equal amount of Polymerized Tung Oil and urethane resin with a petroleum mineral spirit solvent. Used for wood turnings where more sheen or protection is required with fewer applications. This finish provides a traditional oil feel.

Murdoch’s Hard Sealer & Hard OilThis option features the Botanical Polymerized Tung Oil with a urethane/alkyd resin added. The solvent is our proprietary citrus solvent, Di-Citrusol™. Like Wiping Varnish, we recommend this for turnings that need extra protection or more sheen with fewer applications. While the finish looks like an oiled surface, the “feel” is harder because of the resin combination and the reduced amount of Tung Oil. The cure times tend to be shorter making it a favorite for commercial applications.
