Section A

Reading section

Ques.1 Read the passage and answer the questions given below. 5

Have you ever notice how your car can get on a warm sunny day? This

happen because heat and light from the sun get trapped in the car. They can get

into the car but can't get out and car become hotter than the outside

temperature. This is what happened with the our earth as well.

The earth atmosphere has certain greenhouse gases like CO2, water vapour,

methane and so on.

These gases trap heat and light from the sun and help to keep our planet warm.

This is called the greenhouse effect. A greenhouse is a building in which plant

grow more rapidly because heat of the sun trap in it. The greenhouse effect is

important for us. If no heat and light were trapped by the gases, the earth would

not be warm enough for us to live. On the other hand, if an increase in

greenhouse effect take place, we will all feel the heat in a very uncomfortable

way! Ever since human beings started using fossil fuel (coal, oil and natural gas)

more and more greenhouse gases have been added to the atmosphere. This has

resulted in global warming. The temperature on our planet has risen in the last

century and is continuing to do so. In the last 100 year the temperature on the

earth has risen by one degree Fahrenheit. This may not seem much but it make a

lot of difference to life on our planet. The web of life is closely linked to climatic

condition and min changes can cause some spices of planet to die. If the earth

continues to get warmer it will become too hard for certain plants like corn,

wheat, vegetables and fruits to grow and animals will not get food to eat.

Gradually people, plants and animal will begin to die of Hunger.

People are are doing many things to stop global warming. This thing is car

pulling, another thing that people are doing is being more careful about switching

off appliance like television, cute and light as a process of electricity production

releases a lot of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

Even leaving the charger of your mobile phones on consume precious electricity.

Now more and more people riding buses, walking to school or for riding their

bikes to lower the amount of greenhouse gases in the air. Planting trees and

recycling also help. If you recycle less trash goes to the dump, less is burnt and

thus fewer greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. Planting more

trees will help because trees use carb CO2 to make their food and CO2 as

everyone knows, is a greenhouse gas. We all need to save energy and think in

green terms.

1. What is meant by the greenhouse effect? Explain in your own words, with

the help of an example.

2. What is global warming?

3. Why do you think plant grow quickly in greenhouse?

4. What do you think will happen if the earth keep getting warmer day by

day?

5. "We all need to save energy and think in green terms". Explain.
