Illegal roadsideadverts targetedin crackdownA COUNTYWIDE crackdownon illegal and misleading adver-tising on roadsides has beenlaunched.

It comes following a rise in thenumber of complaints made to War-wickshire County Council TradingStandards and at the county council’shighways department.

James Greenaway, team managerfor Trading Standards, said: “As partof our efforts to protect Warwickshireconsumers, we are aiming to tacklethe issue of pallet board advertise-ments that are illegally positioned orcontain false or misleading informa-tion or claims.

“We are asking the Warwickshirepublic to help by reporting illegaladvertising in their neighbourhoodplaced on the public highway oraffixed to a lamppost or street sign.”

In Stratford, complaints aboutcommercial event organisers hangingadvertising banners on roadside rail-ings at key junctions across the townled to the introduction of a voluntarycode of conduct that controls howmany can be in place at any one time

and the length of time they can remain.Residents concerned about a trader

SISTERS Lillie and Victoria Bleasdale are runningseven races as part of their personal challenge whichwill see them cover 190km, raising £5,000 along theway.

Twenty-year-old Lille and Victoria Bleasdale, 26,will be tackling a range of races from the Two Castles10km Run to the Vitality London 10,000, and theStratford Autumn Shakespeare 10km. Lillie completedthe first challenge last week running the LondonSupernova 5km.

The sporty sisters from Warwick are fundraising fortwo causes close to their hearts, Cancer Research UKand the Central England Rehabilitation Unit (CERU)in Leamington which cares for people suffering froman acquired brain injury, stroke or tumour.

Lillie said: “Our mum is the general manager atCERU and both me and Victoria have spent timehelping out there and we’ve been inspired by the workthat they do. Then after losing our grandfather tocancer in 2016, we wanted to help raise awareness ofthe disease and help bring forward the day when allcancers can be cured or prevented.”

Former verger jailedover teenager assaultAN assistant verger at the his-toric St Mary’s CollegiateChurch in Warwick has beenjailed after being convicted ofsexually assaulting a secondteenager almost 30 years ago.

That victim came forward afterseeing newspaper reports of one oftwo court cases for which of retiredteacher Alan Baker had appeared atWarwick Crown Court last year.

And last week 81-year-old Bakerwas jailed for two-and-a-half-yearsand ordered to register as a sexoffender for life after pleading guiltyto three charges of indecent assault.

Prosecutor Paul Fairley said that inApril last year Baker had been given a12-month prison sentence suspendedfor two years for sexual assaults on a17-year-old youth.

As a result of subsequent press cov-erage, the police were contacted by aman in his early 40s who describedhaving been abused by Baker when hewas 14 or 15. He had come in to con-tact with Baker, who at the time was ateacher at a local primary and middleschool and a prominent member of StMary’s Collegiate Church in War-wick, at a time when he was havingdifficulties at home.

The court heard Baker befriendedhim and began offering him privatemusic tuition, during which he saidBaker would stand behind him,pressing himself against his back,although Baker denied doing so whenhe was interviewed.

The man also described incidentswhen Baker would push him upagainst a wall and fondle him over his

trousers before progressing to doingso after undoing the boy’s trousers.

There were other more serious inci-dents of sexual assault.

Mr Fairley pointed out that as wellas the sentence a year ago, Baker hadbeen back before the court inNovember after he breached a SexualHarm Prevention Order imposed atthe time of the original sentence.

That had involved him continuingto give music lessons to childrenwithout informing some of the chil-dren’s parents about his conviction, inbreach of the order. And as a result hewas given an additional eight-monthsentence suspended for two years.

Nick Devine, defending, acknowl-edged prison was inevitable, butadded that Baker pleaded guilty at thefirst opportunity, felt remorse, andaged 81 was not in the best of health.

He added that Baker, of BuckleyRoad, Leamington, had worked all hislife in the teaching profession until heretired, and had never had a properrelationship of any sort.

Jailing Baker, Recorder AnthonyLowe told him: “You have been ableto live the last 25-or-so years of yourlife with everyone believing you werean upstanding member of the commu-nity, when you were not.”

Police chief happy with triple ‘good’ ratingTHREE recent inspection reportsinto the external activity andinternal operations of Warwick-shire Police have been assessed as‘good’, in a PEEL report fromHer Majesty’s Inspector of Con-stabulary (HMIC), released thisweek.

The inspection regime examinesthe forces operations across threekey areas: effectiveness (keeping

people safe and reducing crime),efficiency (providing value formoney), and legitimacy (treatingpeople with fairness and respect).

Warwickshire Police Chief Con-stable, Martin Jelley, said of thethree ‘good’ ratings: “Thesereports reflect the hard work andcommitment demonstrated byofficers, volunteers and staff inhelping to protect our communi-

ties and to achieve our aspirationof being great at protecting themost vulnerable.

“However, we recognise thatthere is still room for improve-ment. We will continue to strivefor excellence across all areas ofactivity, working in partnershipwith the Police and Crime Com-missioner and the communities weserve.”

Watchdog promotesannual conferenceMEMBERS of Patient ParticipationGroups (PPGs) from GP surgeriesacross Stratford and south Warwick-shire are being urged to join forces tohelp identify common experiencesand issues affecting health and socialcare services across their area.

The call comes from the chief exec-utive of patient advocate groupHealthwatch Warwickshire, who islooking to organise an annual confer-ence to allow patients from Warwick-shire’s 83 surgeries to help build apicture of what works well withinhealth and social care in the county,and areas that need improvement.

Chris Bain is seeking to work withPPGs across south Warwickshire andorganise an annual conference.

It comes on the back of a series of

public meetings organised by Health-watch Warwickshire last year.

The lack of beds for elderly men, ageneral fear of speaking up or com-plaining, bureaucracy and beingunable to book double appointments,coupled with GPs only treating oneissue at a time, were among the manyissues raised during the Stratfordmeeting in December.

Common issues raised across thewhole of the county included feelingintimidated when dealing with pro-fessionals such as GPs, common useof jargon, and lack of communication.

Healthwatch Warwickshire islooking to bring the various groupstogether as one voice, to give themmore weight and to have more influ-ence on decisions made by health and

social care service commissionersand providers going forward.

Chris said: “The feedback wereceived from the district workshopslast year is already being used toshape the future of services, but werecognise that PPGs are a small groupof people who may find it difficult toraise issue with the service they arereceiving without fear of causingoffence or even fear of reprisals.

“By joining together they can shareexperiences good and bad, find outwhat does or doesn’t work well else-where, and gain courage andanonymity while using a collectivevoice.”

medals to members of staff withbetween 20 and 40 years’ servicewith the ambulance service.

Community fund’s £1,000boost to popular music festTHE popular Kineton Music Festivaltakes place for the fifth year in June.

Around 1,500 music lovers areexpected to descend on Kineton Sportsand Social Club on Saturday, 17th June.

Ten bands have been confirmed onthe line up so far, including AbbaChique, D-Day Dolls and The JonnyOates Band.

The Meanies — who play soul,groove, rock and ska — will play afestival eve gig at the club on theFriday night.

This year the festival is being part-funded by a £1,000 grant from house-builder Persimmon’s CommunityChampions initiative, which offersgrants for local events.

As well as paying for headline artistsand sound crew, Kineton’s money willalso be put towards security and med-ical staffing costs.

The Friends group will be hosting a spe-cial Cards Night in Tiddington on Friday,28th April.

� A KEY historical figure during theEnglish Civil War was the subject of atalk hosted by Warwickshire Local His-tory Society.

Andrew Hopper, Associate Professor ofEnglish Local History at the Universityof Leicester, gave a talk entitledKatharine, Lady Brooke: A Radical Aris-tocrat Widow in the English Civil War.

Members heard how Lady Brooke’shusband was one of only two Parliamen-tarian peers killed during fighting — inhis case by a sniper situated in Lichfieldcathedral. Many more Royalist peers diedduring the conflict.

The Brooke family were one of the

wealthiest English families of the timeowning land, as well as Warwick Castle,dispersed throughout England.

Lady Brooke, as a widow, lived prima-rily in or near London. Unlike most CivilWar widows, Lady Brooke was able tomobilise Parliamentary networks toobtain financial assistance and to receivefinancial recompense from Royalists.Much of Dr Hopper’s research was basedon the household accounts that survivedat Warwick Castle until bought by theWarwickshire County Record Officewhen the castle was sold in the 1970s.

Heather cuts itas a fundraiserHEATHER Riley set out to raise £1,000when she decided to shave all her hairoff — but eventually doubled that target.

And last week she was at Warwick Hos-pital to hand over the £2,048.17 she raisedto the Helen Clarke Suite.

Heather, who lives in Stratford, wasdiagnosed with breast cancer inNovember 2016 and is still undergoingtreatment.

All the money she raised will gotowards landscaping the gardens to createa calm place for patients.

She said: “The Helen Clarke Suite

doesn’t make you feel like just anothernumber. It’s only a small place but itmeans the world to me. They’ve beenreally good to me and my husband.

“I hope it is enough to make a differ-ence. I want to make the courtyard some-thing special, even when the world aroundseems bleak.”

Foodbank stocks fallto a record low levelA SIGNIFICANT increase inpeople seeking food parcels hasleft Stratford’s Foodbank run-ning low on supplies and inneed of donations.

Since opening in 2013, the volun-teer-run service has fed over 5,600people, 22 per cent of which werechildren.

During February and March thisyear emergency food parcels wereprovided to 325 people — a big riseon the same period last year when thefoodbank provided 159 parcels tothose in crisis.

From feeding an average 110people a month the foodbank is nowfeeding in excess of 160 a month.

Organisers will be hosting a special

collection on Friday, 21st, and Sat-urday, 22nd April.

Foodbank manager, MarionHomer, said: “In the two years I havebeen manager I have never seen ourshelves so empty, not because we arereceiving less food donations, butbecause we are seeing a lot morepeople seeking our help.

“While we are not in any imme-diate danger of turning anyone away,it would be good if we could re-stock

our warehouse. “We are currently giving out more

food than we are receiving which isobviously not tenable over manymore months. We are very grateful toMorrison’s who have responded toour campaign for more food byagreeing to hold a food drive.”

Among the specific donations theFoodbank needs is long life UHTjuice, tinned vegetables, tinned pota-toes instant mashed potatoes, ricepudding, tinned fruit, and biscuits.

Volunteers are also needed to manthe collection point at Morrisons fortwo-hour shifts on both days.

Land Rover Defender thefts up by 60%THE Land RoverDefender has entered thetop ten most stolen andrecovered league table forthe first time.

Latest figures fromTRACKER, a specialistcompany in tracking andtelematics reveal a 57 percent increase in thenumber of thefts of theiconic vehicle from 2015to 2016. It says it con-firms a rise in demandsince its productionstopped in January of lastyear.

Andy Barrs, head ofpolice liaison atTRACKER, said: “Thefact that we have seen thenumber of Defender theftsdouble this year comparedto 2015 shows just howpopular these cars havebecome, particularly sincethey are no longer in pro-duction, making them amajor target for organisedcar thieves.

“Additionally, LandRover Defenders are pop-ular second cars meaningthey are often parked ondriveways or stored ingarages most of the time,

making them sitting targetsfor thieves.”

The last Defender rolledoff the production line atJaguar Land Rover’s Soli-hull Lode Lane plant in Jan-uary.

It was launched in April1948 and modelled on thewar-time Jeep.

But time was called on itdue to tough EuropeanUnion emissions regulations,and its failure to meetincreasingly rigorousmodern safety standards.
