Periodontists

President’s Message

As we go through this holiday season spending time with family and friends, and perhaps eating a little more good food than intended, I am reminded of the need to slow down a little and nourish an attitude of gratitude.

I first joined the Southwest Society of Periodontists in 1987, when I was a resident at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. I really didn’t know what the organization was about. I just knew that Colonel (Dr.) Bill Hallmon and Colonel (Dr.) Mike Mills told me to join, so I joined. They were my bosses during the residency, and what they said to do, I did. While some might think, “I’m glad my bosses didn’t order me around,” I am grateful for this early example of mentorship. Let’s face it – sometimes mentorship means telling someone what they are going to do, rather than asking that they do it. We do this with our children all the time; we are their foremost mentors. Joining the SWSP and participating in its activities weren’t options for me or my resident classmates; this was an expectation. Why?

I think that part of our formation as professionals is the practice of joining. Of participating. When I was a GPR

resident, the gentleman who ran our hospital got all the new residents together during the first week of the program for a chat. When he sat down with the six of us brand new dentists beginning our residency training, and I might add beginning our service as officers in the Air Force, he said to us, “The key to success in your career is participation. You are an Air Force officer; make sure you participate in every activity you can both within and outside your unit. You will have families; make sure that you participate in as many of your spouses’ and kids’ activities as you can. You are a dentist; make sure you participate in organized dentistry activities. You are a citizen of the United States; make sure you participate in civic activities in your community and beyond.” I remember this like it was yesterday even though it was over 30 years ago. Participation, why does it matter?

Participation is how we step outside of ourselves and become part of something larger. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in our own daily lives – patients, practice, small business, teaching, research – whatever it is that we “do.” All of those things matter a great deal, but they don’t make us whole. Participation in things outside of what we “do” is what brings fullness to life.

I have been fortunate over my 30+ years since dental school graduation to be able to participate in a lot of activities that have brought meaning to my life. My family, my church, my friends – activities revolving around each of these have enriched my personal life. The AAP, the SWSP, local study clubs – activities involving these have enriched my professional life. But interestingly these professional activities have also enriched my personal life. The people I have met through the SWSP and other organizations have become good friends. I look forward to our SWSP meetings because I know I will see folks I haven’t seen in several months, or sometimes years. We can catch up on what’s been going on. We can talk about our practices or students or patients. We can talk about our families. We can introduce someone new to the group. Maybe someone who just started a practice nearby or started coming to our study club. Maybe a new resident who is eager to meet established clinicians to pick their brains. Some people call this “networking”. I call it “relationships.”

The SWSP has been a rich source of mentoring relationships for a lot of our members. Many of us have had a chance to engage members who have been practicing a lot longer than we have and to gain from their experiences. When I first came into the SWSP, I was stunned by the people I met – the names I heard every week in classes, the people who spoke at the AAP meeting every year, the authors of the articles I was reading for lit seminar. But in the SWSP, I met a whole lot more people who weren’t “famous” in the perio world, per se. They were practitioners and teachers who put into practice what those famous people were studying and writing about. They were the men and women who advance our specialty through daily practice, through continuing education, through sharing with others the things they know and do. People like the ones who have given our “Perio Pearls” lectures at the SWSP meetings the last few years. People like the man or woman who will sit next to you at the SWSP meeting in February (be there!).

Well, that’s why Bill Hallmon and Mike Mills said, “You will join the SWSP” when I was a first year resident. A lot of our SWSP members have become my mentors. I come to the SWSP meetings to learn, yes, but also to sit with these folks to talk. They tell me what’s working for them and what’s not. They give me some

grounding in private practice issues, since I don’t live with those subjects day-to-day like they do. They talk to me about practice opportunities for our residents. They tell me the latest and greatest. Many of these mentors are now my former residents. They give me feedback on what they learned and what they wish they’d learned during residency training. They tell me the procedures they are doing the same way as in residency and the ones they are now doing differently and why. They turn the mentor into the mentee. They enrich my life.

I am thankful for the SWSP and for what the Society has given me. I am thankful for Jodie and Bob Harrison, and their amazingly strong management of our organization for so many years. I am grateful for those who led the Society in the past, through good times and difficult times. I am thankful for all those people sitting around the table during the Board meetings. They are giving of themselves so that all of us might be better. In fact, I smile at every Board meeting once we are all assembled. I think to myself, “Why are these people here? Why did they volunteer to serve our Society?” After all, they could all be doing something else. But they decided that the SWSP was something they were going to participate in. What makes me smile is that many of them are sitting around that table because somebody said to him or her, “I want you to serve on X committee, so I appointed you.” Or, “I need you to be the Chair of that committee next year.” Just like Bill Hallmon and Mike Mills did with me when I first joined the SWSP, it helps sometimes when we “ask” in a vigorous and encouraging way. Sometimes, that’s how we get people to participate.

I am blessed to be the Program Director of the perio residency in San Antonio. I work with a great bunch of faculty, staff and residents. The best residents and faculty in the U.S. (it’s OK for the Program Directors of the other residencies in our SWSP area to disagree with my assertion, but we can argue that over an adult beverage). On our web site, you can find the mission of our residency program: “to produce the best clinical periodontists in the nation – clinicians who will provide the highest quality care to their patients, who will support their families and communities, who will add to the body of knowledge in periodontology, and who will give back to the profession of dentistry throughout their careers.” We expect our residents to participate, to give back to the profession. That is an expectation I hope we all have for ourselves. One way we can do that is by active participation in the SWSP.

So, to all of our SWSP members, I thank you for being a part of our organization. And I ask that you consider participating in the Society in a way that perhaps you haven’t before. I ask you to have an attitude of gratitude toward others, to be thankful for those on whose shoulders you rode to this point in your professional life. And I ask that you now bear the yoke for those who need your mentoring. All the best to each of you in 2014.

PLEASE VISIT WITH AND SUPPORT YOUR EXHIBITORS

They Support your Society! Please be sure to visit with our Exhibitors before the meeting

begins, during breaks, at lunch and after the meeting ends for the day. Our Exhibitors support the Southwest Society of Periodontists by choosing our association over many others as a location for their exhibit dollars. It is important that our members in turn support our

Exhibitors by visiting with them and learning about their new products and information and by placing orders for their products during our

meetings when possible. If you order a product at the meeting that you would normally order through a representative who visits your office

or an 800 number, many companies consider the order as a direct result of the exhibit. Your patronage is beneficial and it sends the message

that we appreciate our Exhibitors who support us. Remember that your visit with our Exhibitors is important.

The financial benefit of having Exhibitors is enormous. Because of their continued support, we are able to do things that would be difficult to do otherwise.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO PLACE YOUR ORDERS AT THE MEETING if at all possible and not wait until you return to your office. It does make a difference!

mEETing hoTElSOur members’ comments regarding the choices of hotels and style of the meetings have been very complimentary and we hope to continue with this type of meeting in the future. However, we will only be able

to keep the costs down and hotel room rates at a reasonable level if our members support our meetings by staying at the meeting hotels. Our meeting hotels provide benefits and amenities which are often not available at other types of hotels. We block a projected number

of rooms for each meeting and are responsible for any unsold rooms. Additionally, if our history reflects that we do not meet the room

blocks, we are unable to block either the same amount or a greater amount of rooms at future hotels. Also, the room block affects the

room rates. Even though we may have good attendance at meetings, it is the number of sleeping rooms sold that counts when negotiating future hotel contracts. Please help us insure that we will be able to

continue with the type of meetings we currently have. If you will be staying at a hotel and attending meetings of the SWSP, please consider supporting our meeting by registering at the meeting hotel. The winter

2014 meeting is at the Dallas Marriott Las Colinas Hotel in Irving, Texas. The Group Room Rate (Single/Double) is $105.

Guest Speaker

Lyndon F. Cooper, D.D.S., Ph.D.“Esthetic Excellence in the Dental Implant Era”

Biographical Information:

Dr. Lyndon Cooper D.D.S., Ph.D. is the Stallings Distinguished Professor of Dentistry of the Department of Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he serves as Director of Graduate Prosthodontics. Dr. Cooper is a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and served as the 2010 President of the American College of Prosthodontics. He received the ACP’s 2004 Clinician/Researcher Award and the IADR’s 2009 Distinguished Scientist Award for Prosthodontics and Implantology. Dr. Cooper’s Bone Biology and Implant Therapy Laboratory focuses on bone biology, adult stem cell bone regeneration, and clinical evaluation of dental implant therapies. The laboratory receives funding through NIH and by industry collaboration. Their research findings have been presented in over 115 publications and numerous national and international presentations. These efforts integrate basic and clinical research to improve patient care.

Course Synopsis: This seminar will explore the realities of dental esthetics in the era of dental implants. Three different scenarios must be separately considered. First, the single tooth implant will be considered. Important concepts regarding the role of immediate provisionalization important to the periodontist will be highlighted. Second, anterior fixed dental prosthesis will be examined. The role of site development will be explored from a restorative perspective. Finally, the maxillary implant supported denture will be reviewed in context of esthetics and related functional issues. Over the day’s discussion, important limitations confronted for each of these different scenarios will be identified and solutions to the most common esthetic problems will be addressed. Three general issues will be addressed in each of these scenarios; a) where should implants be optimally positioned, b) when is bone and soft tissue augmentation required and c) what is the appropriate restorative strategy. Newer concepts in digital design and prosthesis fabrication will be highlighted throughout the day. While an evidence-based approach will be used to characterize possible outcomes, a richly illustrated clinical format will be used to offer clinically relevant instruction to all participants.
