Page 2: Symptoms of TOS and How to Treat Outlet Syndrome Exploring ... · Therapeutic treatment techniques for symptoms of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is caused

Therapeutic treatment techniques for symptoms of Thoracic Outlet SyndromeThoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is caused by a lack of space for the subclavian artery and the brachial plexus as they pass through the clavicle and upper ribs. A tight ligament, an extra cervical rib, shoulder injury, or overuse can all lead to TOS. A cluster of symptoms including neck and shoulder pain with numbness or tingling of the fingers and reduced grip strength are present with TOS. Typical diagnosis of TOS is rare and most common after surgical removal of the first cervical rib. While a diagnosis of TOS is uncommon, patients often present with symptoms not unlike TOS, pain that moves and changes or presents little improvement after surgery. Patients with a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel, arm pain, etc., that do not improve with typical protocols can be frustrating for both the patient and the clinician.

This one-day seminar will explore conservative approaches to treat symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome for strengthening the shoulder muscles, improving range of motion, and promoting better posture to help patients with arm and hand pain. Attendees will discover how to differentiate TOS from other more common orthopedic conditions, determine the most effective treatment options, and outline a home exercise program that will allow the patient to return to a healthy state. This unique look at the symptoms of TOS and treatment can not only change patient outcomes but also help build rapport between therapists and medical professionals.

Course DirectorJACALYN GRIFFIN, OTR/L, is a licensed Occupational Therapist and member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). Ms. Griffin earned her bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is a certified Lymphedema Therapist and Physical Agent Modality Certified. Ms. Griffin is passionate about treating TOS and patients with arm pain.
