Our synagogue is a wonderful place to be. I am reminded of this fact at many different times. At the High Holy Days, when our congregation is at its fullest and most vibrant. At a weekday minyan, when the tenth Jewish adult enters the Steinberg Chapel, ensuring that Kaddish can be recited along with many other prayers. At a Bar or Bat Mitzvah lesson, when a student finally perfects a passage after weeks of struggling. At the office on a common weekday, when old friends and new acquaintances (and future friends) mingle with our staff far longer than they expected. At Religious School, when students and their teachers and teen mentors spill into the hallway to work on their Alef-Bet and discuss Judaic topics that are basic yet at the very heart of our tradition. At Shabbat services, when we are blessed by the contributions of many voices that help make our worship participatory and inclusive. And at locations throughout Charleston, when our Sisterhood member discusses a book, or when our Men’s Club gathers at a local pub, or when the entire Charleston Jewish community gathers (with Emanu-El members very much at the forefront). But perhaps the true test of a community lies in its ability to respond appropriately and sensitively to challenging moments in the lives of its members. When this happens, Emanu-El once again excels. I have seen so many in our congregation reach out to those in need of support with overwhelming sympathy and generosity. It’s one of the hallmarks of our synagogue, and one of the reasons I am so blessed to work here. And I’m grateful to many of you who have brought that same spirit to my family in recent weeks. As you may already know, Ellen Miriam and I have separated, and our family has been facing new realities. I want to thank you for being so understanding and supportive to all of us. Obviously, our main focus is ensuring stable and loving environments for our children, and you have been nothing but understanding of this. I am confident this will continue in the immediate and long-term future. Our sages teach us that a proper synagogue is three things at once: a place of worship, a place of study, and a place for communal gathering. I am pleased that our synagogue lives up to this description, and I have so many hopes for the heights we can reach together. I hope you’ll continue to join me as we pursue our goals, armed with the same qualities of decency and compassion you have always shown.

Dear Emanu-El family, It was yesterday, actually three years ago, when our youngest son, Adam, left for college. I have to confess that we both were quite excited. His room would finally be clean, I would not need to buy milk every single day, the car would always have gas when I take it, and I would no longer wake up in the morning and open my wallet to find no cash (yes, I was my son’s ATM machine). Every evening became a date night, and we could finally take one of the rooms and transform it into a home gym. What we did not realize was how much our life was centered on Adam. His departure left us feeling lost and mildly out of place. Our relationship was different now. It was a positive change, good for Adam and great for us. What I did not realize is that no matter if it is good or bad, a change is always distressful. So, what was our alternative? Should we have persuaded Adam to stay in Charleston and live at the house longer? Probably a bad idea … we all would have ended up on medication. Should we have moved to college with him? The tuition x3 would have been too much for us to afford, I am sure. Bottom line, the change was stressful, but there was no way to avoid it. If you don’t believe me, let’s talk about Moses. This poor man had to lead the Jewish people through one of the most radical changes a person can experience. A movement from slavery to freedom (I know, you can also argue that is what Olga and I experienced when Adam left), but what was the result? The Jewish people did not know what to do with the freedom. Change was stressful and many times, they wanted to go back to being slaves, not because they liked slavery, but because they liked the safety and comfort of a well known and predictable environment. At Emanu-El, we are no different. We have grown comfortable with the way we do things. The services may not be perfect, but they feel comfortable and predictable. A synagogue member once told me that he/she did not want anything to be changed in any of the services. I was surprised because this congregant rarely attended services. So, the congregant did not regularly attend services, but wanted to be sure that when he/she does decide to come to services, they would remain frozen in time. Another congregant told me that he/she loved the services the way that they were, and that they met all of their spiritual needs. Of course, I was not surprised. This congregant came faithfully to services every Saturday, and was clearly satisfied by the nature of them. However, if we want to survive, we will have to change. We will have to meet the needs of the other 300-400 congregants that do not come to services and are not part of the synagogue’s usual activities. As was the case with my child, the process of change will not be easy. Moreover, it will be stressful, and the change will not feel right at first. We will need to tweak it and work on it until we get it right. Change is not going from strength to strength, it is going from strength to distress to strength, but avoiding change is simply not an option. As a follow-up, Olga and I are still happily married, Adam is about to finish college, we learned to enjoy that every night is a date night, and now I can go to the gym almost every day, in the comfort of my own home.
Warm Regards, Jacobo

This year has really flown by for me and I am sure for a lot of you. I have to look back and wonder, did Sisterhood involve itself enough to help others, did we overlook persons in need? I am certain there was someone who was overlooked. Help us to be there by renewing your membership now, become involved with us on the lifelong journey. Many of you have not committed to us with you dues for this fiscal year and I always find it sad that there is a barrier to becoming involved in Sisterhood. We need your support, help and input into our reaching out and meeting our goals. I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving; we have so much to be thankful for!

Shabbat, Saturday, November 14th
October has been a fun month for Men’s Club. YAD and Men’s Club built our Sukkah and enjoyed pizza and beer afterwards. Unfortunately our Sukkah received limited use this year due to the record rainfall. We had a very enjoyable Beer & Burger in the Sukkah event even though we moved indoors due to the rain. I want to thank Harold Grater for helping prepare the meal. I want to thank Larry Lipov of Palmetto Brewing Company for braving the weather to provide a beer tasting of their beers and also for providing the beers we enjoyed with our meal. Their motto is “ENJOY WITH FOOD AND FRIENDS”. Afterwards we presented a certificate to Ari Levine for being our youngest Men’s Club member upon reaching his eighteenth birthday. Our big project this year is to raise money to replace the bamboo matting for our Sukkah roof. Upcoming events are as follows: Spirit Night is Thursday, November 12th at Sesame Beer & Burgers in Mt.
Pleasant. On Sunday, November 15th, we will grill for Jews, Brews & Que’s. On Friday December 25th, Men’s Club/Sisterhood will prepare a Chinese
dinner prior to Shabbat services. Save the dates of February 19th-21st as our Men’s Club will be joining
other Men’s Clubs for our annual retreat at Camp Ramah, where we men are always right, at least for 48 hours.

Religious School
Students:
Every Shabbat during the Haftarah, join
Daphne in the Steinberg Chapel for
Torah Trivia and Treats from the weekly Parsha.
A question posed to 4th- & 5th-grade students:
Should Jews pray in Hebrew or in their native language? I think Jews should pray in their native language because they might know it more. They might not have time to learn Hebrew. They could spend more time praying than learning Hebrew. - Alexis Veyber I say we should say our prayers in the Hebrew language. I think this is because everyone should know the language and not everyone speaks the same language. - Max Keller
Now that we made it through the High Holiday season, Religious School classes are getting in their normal schedule groove and High School Mentoring has started their mid-week sessions. Just a few reminders to keep school running smoothly:
School starts promptly at 9AM. The Hebrew Team starts their individual Hebrew lessons with students at 9:10AM. If your student is late, they may miss their Hebrew lesson for the day. Please make every effort to be on time.
Regular Emanu-El Service attendance is part of our program. We require that all students attend Shabbat or Holiday services twice a month. There are so many Family options to choose from - thank goodness you don't have to limit it to only two: Friday Night Family Services, FNL, USY-led 4th Friday Late Night service, Tot Shabbat, Junior Congregation and the weekly Torah Talk with Daphne featuring Parsha Candy.
Mid-week Hebrew Tutoring is a required part of the program. If your time slot is not working for your student and their High School Mentor, please get in touch.
This month, I will be traveling to Chicago for the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism conference. I am having a hard time choosing which seminars to attend during the 5 day conference and look forward to coming back with ideas to enhance Religious School, youth participation and Synagogue Life for all ages.

The inHEIRitance Project is five plays made with five communities over three years. Each play is inspired by the
narrative of a matriarch or patriarch from the book of Genesis and created collaboratively with local community members
through text study, arts workshops and online assignments. In preparation for Charleston's play, Rabbi Rosenbaum will
be discussing REBECCA on November 21st after Kiddush. Mark your calendars because you do not

Cheshvan
This month is the anticlimax of the previous month of Tishrei. With so many hol idays and spir i tual experiences, it was a feast for the soul—a vacation of sorts. Now, as we enter the month of Cheshvan, real life begins, back to the daily “mundane” grind. This is the time to take the inspiration and all that we gained in the month of Tishrei and integrate it into our lives, learning how to balance the spiritual and the physical elements of our life in unison and harmony.
Tevet
Tevet is the month associated with the soul of wisdom, which is characterized by our ability to nullify ourselves. Righteous indignation, too, cannot be about me or my ego, but must come from a place of surrender to something beyond myself.
Kislev
Kislev is the month that begins
the winter season, when the light
of the summer is becoming
hidden and when we enter into a
place of spiritual concealment.
But it is through our surrender to
the darkness that we can
reveal and manifest the greatness
of who we are.

2015 Max Kirshstein Community Youth Endowment Award
The Deadline is coming up soon!
The annual “Max Kirshstein Community Youth Endowment Award” recognizes
Charleston Jewish teenagers for outstanding community service. The Kirshstein family honors their father Max through this annual award, whose own life exemplified
extraordinary dedication to others. The application requires written references from two or more teachers, advisors, or other supervisors who can attest to the student’s impact
on the community. All Charleston area teens in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply. All applications and recommendation letters are due by
Friday, November 20, 2015. The award of $1,000 will be presented at the Charleston Jewish Federation’s Annual Meeting. We look forward to honoring a Charleston Jewish teenager who serves the community in the same unselfish manner as Max Kirshstein did for so many years.
For more information, please contact Rebecca Leibowitz.
