Editor’s DeskDear Readers,

At the outset I wish you all a very happy, bright and prosperous 2014.

It is time to change the calendars and finalize our plans for the coming year. We will face a new

year, with new set of challenges and opportunities and a clean slate for the year ahead. It is

up to us how we plan and how will we approach the challenges and opportunities. We can

speculate, but the future is unpredictable.

While we can’t say exactly what tomorrow will bring, we can do lots to point our compasses

toward the brightest stars.

Significant advances have been made in almost every field, be it in trade, human development,

public health, advances in science, technology and communication, growth in economy and

so on. Human history is thus marching by and large to the drumbeat of progress. Hope this

year also we could see movement on all of these fronts, hopefully more.

There is already a paradigm shift in Indian politics where AAP (Aam Admi Party) won with good

numbers and it is really a victory of a common man. We need to be more interested in the

broader perspective i.e. not what politics will look like in two months or two years , but in twenty

who will pave the pathway of India into world supreme power is continuing with head to head

competition. Forecasting will always be something like tossing a coin.

Finally once again , with all the unrest and intolerance in the world, I hope you and your family

and friends find peace and have safe, healthy and a happy year ahead.

Dr Daxa Mishra, PT (Professor)

Scientific Writing

Activate your natural healing powerIt’s a piece of advice yogis have given for thousands of years: “Take a deep breath and relax. Watch the tension melt from your muscles and all your niggling worries vanish.” Somehow we all know that relaxation is good for us.

Research on the processes and effects of meditation is a growing subfield of neurological research. Modern scientific techniques and instruments, such as fMRI and EEG, have been used to see what happens in the body of people when they meditate, and how their bodies and brain change after meditating regularly.

These studies have shown substantial bodily changes as a consequence of regular meditative practice. For instance, one study by Richard Davidson and Jon-Kabat-Zinn showed that eight weeks of mindfulness based meditation produced significant increases in left-sided anterior brain activity, which is associated with positive emotional states. Positive emotion may be a skill which can be achieved with training similar to learning to ride a bike or play the piano.

Long-term meditators experience 80 percent less heart disease and 50 percent less cancer than nonmediators, according to a large body of studies. Meditation has been shown to improve sleep and reduce chronic pain. Meditation as Medicine is not a brisk read or a “read-today-do-tomorrow” guide, however. Be prepared to immerse your mind in a study of chakras, mantras, breathing exercises, movement exercises, poses, and meditations--and discipline yourself to practice these techniques patiently.

Meditation has entered the mainstream of health care as a method of stress and pain reduction. As a method of stress reduction, meditation has been used in hospitals in cases of chronic or terminal illness to reduce complications associated with increased stress that include depressed immune systems. There is growing agreement in the medical community that mental factors such as stress significantly contribute to a lack of physical health, and there is a growing movement in mainstream science to fund research in this area. There are now several mainstream health care programs which aid those, both sick and healthy, in promoting their inner well-being, especially mindfulness-based programs such as mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR).

A 2003 meta analysis found that mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), which involves continuous awareness of consciousness, without seeking to censor thoughts, concluded that the form of meditation may be broadly useful for individuals attempting to cope with clinical and nonclinical problems. Diagnoses for which MBSR was found to be helpful included chronic pain, fibromyalgia, cancer patients and coronary artery disease. Improvements were noted for both physical and mental health measures.

Dr. Hebert Benson, founder of the Mind-Body Medical Institute, which is affiliated with Harvard University and several Boston hospitals, reports that meditation induces a host of biochemical and physical changes in the body collectively referred to as the “relaxation response”. The relaxation response includes changes in metabolism, heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and brain chemistry.

There have been some preliminary studies done on some of the many types of meditation found within the branch of Yoga known as Kundalini. One study showed the cooling of meditators hands as they practiced Sahaja Yoga meditation and another study showed some relaxation while meditators paid attention to their breathing.

A study comparing practitioners of Sahaja Yoga meditation with a group of non meditators doing a simple relaxation exercise, measured a drop in skin temperature in the meditators compared to a rise in skin temperature in the non meditators as they relaxed. The researchers noted that all other meditation studies that have observed skin temperature have recorded increases and none have recorded a decrease in skin temperature. This suggests that Sahaja Yoga meditation, being a mental silence approach, may differ both experientially and physiologically from simple relaxation.

A study involving the participation of a group of college students, who were asked to use a meditation technique called integrative body-mind training (IBMT involves body relaxation, mental imagery, and mindfulness training), concluded that “meditating may improve the integrity and efficiency of certain connections in the brain” through an increase in their number and robustness. Brain scans showed strong white matter changes in the anterior cingulate cortex.

During meditation there is a modest increase in slow alpha or theta wave EEG activity.

Change and Lo found different results, explicable perhaps by the fact they show no sign of even having tested for gamma. First they classify five patterns in meditation based on the normal four frequency ranges (delta < 4Hz, theta 4 to <8Hz, alpha 8 to 13Hz, and beta >13Hz). The five patterns they found were:

1) High-amplitude alpha

2) Slow alpha + theta

3) Theta + delta

4) Delta

5) Amplitude suppressed (“silent and almost flat”)

They found pattern No. 5 unique and characterized by:

1) Extremely low power (significant suppression of EEG amplitude)

2) Corresponding temporal patterns with no particular EEG rhythm

3) No dominating peak in the spectral distribution

They had collected EEG patterns from more than 50 meditators over the prior five years. Five meditation EEG scenarios are then described. They further state that most meditation is dominated by alpha waves. They found delta and theta waves occurred occasionally, sometimes while people fell asleep and sometimes not. In particular they found the amplitude suppressed pattern correlated with “The feeling of blessings.”

O Nuallain, Sean (2009) in Cognitive Sciences 4(2), is the first to interrelate the work on synchronized gamma in consciousness with the well-attested work on gamma in meditation in an experimental context. It adduces experimental and simulated data to show that what both have in common is the ability to put the brain into a state in which it is maximally sensitive and consumes power at a lower (or even zero) rate, briefly. It is argued that this may correspond to a “selfless” state and the more typical non-zero state, in which gamma is not so prominent, corresponds to a state of empirical self. Thus, the “zero power” in the title refers not only to the power spectrum of the brain but also to a psychological state of personal renunciation.

The next time you tune out and switch off and let yourself melt, remind yourself of all the good work the relaxation effect is doing on your body. These are just some of the scientifically proven benefits

1. Increased ImmunityRelaxation appears to boost immunity in recovering cancer patients. A study at the Ohio State University found that progressive muscular relaxation, when practiced daily, reduced the risk of breast cancer recurrence. In another study at Ohio State, a month of relaxation exercises boosted natural killer cells in the elderly, giving them a greater resistance to tumors and to viruses.

2. Emotional Balance Emotional balance means to be free of all the neurotic behavior that results from the

4. Relieves Irritable Bowel SyndromeWhen patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome began practicing a relaxation meditation twice daily, their symptoms of bloating, diarrhoea and constipation improved significantly. The meditation was so effective the researchers at the State University of New York recommended it as an effective treatment.

5. Lowers Blood PressureA study at Harvard Medical School found that meditation lowered blood pressure by making the body less responsive to stress hormones, in a similar way to blood pressure-lowering medication. Meanwhile a British Medical Journal report found that patients trained how to relax had significantly lower blood pressure.

6. Anti-InflamatoryStress leads to inflammation, a state linked to heart disease, arthritis, asthma and skin conditions such as psoriasis, say researchers at Emory University in the US. Relaxation can help prevent and treat such symptoms by switching off the stress response. In this way, one study at McGill University in Canada found that meditation clinically improved the symptoms of psoriasis.

7. CalmnessThe simple difference between those who meditate and those who do not, is that for a meditative mind the thought occurs but is witnessed, while for an ordinary mind, the thought occurs and is the boss. So in both minds, an upsetting thought can occur, but for those who meditate it is just another thought, which is seen as such and is allowed to blossom and die, while in the ordinary mind the thought instigates a storm which rages on and on.

vHealth Benefits of Deep Relaxation achieved through meditation:

existence of a tortured and traumatized ego. This is very hard to achieve fully, butmeditation certainly is the way to cure such neurosis and unhealthy emotional states. As one’s consciousness is cleansed of emotionally soaked memories, not only does great freedom abound, but also great balance. As one’s responses then are not colored by the burdens one carries, but are instead true, direct and appropriate.

3. Increased fertility: A study at the University of Western Australia found that women are more likely to conceive during periods when they are relaxed rather than stressed.Astudyat Trakya University, in Turkey, also found that stress reduces sperm count and motility, suggesting relaxation may also boost male fertility.

Khel Mahakumbh

The legacy of the games to facilitate good health of the nation had an impact on our local population. Khel Mahakumbh is one of the most prestigious sporting events which was started three years before by the Govt. of Gujarat, attracting the best athletes from all over Gujarat. For the first time in the history of Khel Mahakumbh Physiotherapy services were offered as a part of the event by our institute’s doctors. At the outset, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Sandip Pradhan Director General Sports Authority of Gujarat, Mr. Rahul Gupta, Collector Anand District, for providing us an opportunity to provide on-field physiotherapy services during “Khel Mahakumbh-2013” at district as well as state level. We would also like to congratulate on the grand success of this event and happy to be a part and provide support during this venture. The immense participation and the sheer volume of people involved in the different games posed significant challenges to us which we dealt successfully. Along with the co-ordinators- Dr. R. Harihara Prakash, Dr. Ashish Gupta and Dr. Bhavin Patel, a team of skilled and experienced physiotherapists from our institute provided their expert services to all the participants.

Sport can cause injury to physical wellbeing and injury can affect performance in sport. We would like to highlight the physiotherapy needs of participants and their injuries during various sports events. The characteristics of patients, their sustained injuries and their treatments varied. Our team examined and diagnosed injuries, planned treatment program and helped in reducing recovery time so that participants can go back to their game instantly/early.
