Syria wont make GOPs immigration problemgo poof and disappearByGreg Sargent, Published: September 12 at 2:58 pm E-mail the writer

I noted this morning that the overarching factor that will shape this falls fiscal fightsis the deep schism within the GOP over how aggressively to wage war on Obamacare.

For all the talk about how Obamas mishandling of Syria diminishes or weakens him

for coming confrontations, all of that is largely irrelevant to the central question: Can

Republicans resolve their own internal differences?

Its worth noting that a similar dynamic is present on immigration. Whatever Obamas

standing in relation to Congress, it wont change the GOPs predicament on

    immigration one iota.

Jorge Ramos, the widely influential Univision anchor who has been called the Walter

Cronkite of Hispanic media, today published a column that illustrates this nicely.Republicans and neutral commentators say the Syria debate probably means

immigration reform will be delayed indefinitely. This is, of course, a cop out, and

Ramos says so rather bluntly. Heres the translation, courtesy of Americas Voice:

Syria has turned into the biggest excuse to delay, and even eliminate, the chance for

immigration reform this year. The enormous international consequences of an

attack on Syria are giving the most conservative Republicans the pretext they were

looking for not to give a path to citizenship to the undocumented.

Im not trying to downplay the significance of Syriabut Hispanics and immigrants

in the United States deserve better. The last time immigration reform happened

was in 1986, and in 2007 a (weak) immigration bill died of starvation in Congress.

How much longer do we have to wait? [...]

Delaying the debate over immigration reform because of the conflict in Syria is

simply an unacceptable excuse. Truly important things should not be delayed. Syria

and immigration can, and should, both be discussed and resolved before the year

    ends.

As Ramos has previously noted, if immigration reform dies, the Hispanic media and

Latinos generally will hold House Republicans, and House Republicans alone,

responsible for it. Ramos message above is that if Republicans try to use Syria as an

excuse for inaction, Latinos will see right through that, too.

The debate in Washington right now is heavily focused on whether Obamas handling

of Syria in particular, Congress apparent rejection of his request for authorization

has badly weakened his ability to realize the rest of his agenda. Immigration reform,

of course, is a major item on that agenda.

But when it comes to immigration as with this falls fiscal fights that question is

largely irrelevant. Obamas standing or strength with regard to Congress wont

play any significant role in determining whether immigration reform happens. That,

too, is a question that turns only on whether Republicans resolve their differences over

    it.

Immigration reforms fate, at bottom, rests solely on whether Republicans decide it

needs to pass for the long term good of the party. Either they will decide killing reform

is too risky, because it will lock in anti-GOP hostility among Latinos for a generation

or more. Or they will decide passing reform wont do enough to win over Latinos,

given their disagreement with the GOP on other issues, and that the downsides of

alienating the base arent worth the potential upsides. Neither the fact that Congress is

distracted by Syria, nor Obamas short term dip in popularity or standing or whatever

you want to call it, will have anything whatsoever to do with that decision. Nor will

Latino reaction to the GOPs eventual decision. Does anyone imagine that if

Republicans kill reform, Latinos will somehow see the Syria debate or, even more

ludicrously, Beltway-generated ideas about Obamas standing as mitigating

    factors?

When looked at through the prism of specific issues such as immigration reform or

the budget arguments to come the notion that the Syria mess somehow diminishesthe chances for key items on Obamas agenda, or somehow changes the calculus for

Republicans with regard to how to approach them, is plainly absurd on its face.

Im not trying to downplay the significance of Syriabut Hispanics and immigrants in the United States

    deserve better

    -------------------------------------------

Hispanics and immigrants already have citizenship. Illegal aliens do not, and I would instantly wonder if this is

a thugs attempt to demand the illegal aliens.. one and all.. be provided citizenship, and American Laws be

    tossed?

    Why is this even happening?

Do I need to remind everyone the Hispanics are a 15% minority in the United States, with the illegal aliens

representing another 6%. The illegal aliens are the fastest growing group in this country at this point, and

while they vote, they can be beaten. We have been asking that the law be enforced since 1990.. 23 years.

Congress has made many promises.. have lied like a rug to us.. opened the borders there for a while.. and

generally, have not acted like representatives at all.

We do NOT want amnesty for the illegal aliens, and we do not want citizenship for the illegal aliens. We

should not be asked and Obama should be made to enforce the Immigration Law in the Interior as it should

be.. as it was designed to be.

Reform - 1. make changes in (something, typically a social, political, or economic institution or

practice) in order to improve it.

~ To bring about a change in (someone) so that they no longer behave in an immoral, criminal, or

    self-destructing manner.

So really by dictionary definition, yes it would be immigration reform. They are immigrants because

they immigrated from another country. Status doesn't matter. No one calls the bill "Legal Immigration

    reform."

Actually, Syria gives cover to lawmakers who would like to pass immigration reform, but who prefer to fly

Latin American immigrants have helped to transform Baltimore. We now have more great eateries, roast-

chicken takeouts, bodegas, etc, than ever before.

I have wonderful neighbors from Honduras. Maybe there's too many in the house, but they have brought with

them their culture which is wonderfully family-centered. The genuine affection of their neighborliness to me, I

try to return 10 times over.

And then there's the soccer games in the park - what was once an eyesore of a barren field is three great

soccer fields where the games on the weekends are played with the gusto of the World Cup.

We could not ask for a better new wave of immigrants. Whoever it is that is having such a problem with these

wonderful, beautiful people: Get over it!!~!

    2,000 to central Mexico.

Most Americans are familiar with the forced relocation in 1942 of 112,000 J apanese Americans from the West

Coast to internment camps. Far fewer are aware that during the Great Depression, the Federal Bureau of

Immigration (after 1933, the Immigration and Naturalization Service) and local authorities rounded up Mexican

immigrants and naturalized Mexican American citizens and shipped them to Mexico to reduce relief roles. In a

shameful episode, more than 400,000 repatriodos, many of them citizens of the United States by birth, were

sent across the U.S.-Mexico border from Arizona, California, and Texas. The Mexican-born population in

People were also a lot more racist during Eisenhower's time. Segregation was still common, skin

changed since then, so continuing to use Eisenhower as your example in today's world doesn't do a

whole lot for your arguments. You're right, he's dead, he can't be a leader for this country and the

ones we have now (Obama, Boehner, etc.) aren't doing a great job at fixing any of today's

segregation. But there are 11 million + people and honestly we can't afford to send them all home,

do you know how much debt we're in?!

    modest ishottest responds:

America has an immigration problem - as Democrats want to sell out US workers by legalizing 11 million to

pander to Hispanics. The Senate bill has a cutoff of 12/31/2011 - so people arriving after that aren't covered.

Once this passes, the Democrats will insist that we do NOT enforce the laws on the books except the onesthat enable people to live here illegally. We'll do another immigration reform in 2030 for another 11 million

    people.

Let me explain the facts of economic life to you:

Illegal (but not criminal) immigrants live in the US under the constant fear of deportation.

Therefore they will not put up a fuss about low pay (or even no pay) or wretched working conditions.

Therefore they hold down pay and working conditions, as long as they remain here.

But, with immigration reform, such exploited workers will be able to demand equal treatment. Thus

they will be paid the same as everyone else, they will be able to work in safety, etc. etc. etc.

    Local Bird responds:
