WhyHaveWeGathered?ThelettertotheHebrewsremindsusthat“wearesurroundedbyagreatcloudofwitnesses.”Andsowegatheronthisnighttorememberthosesaintsandancestorswhohavegonebeforeusandonwhoseshoulderswestand.WetakethistimetoaskfortheirintercessionsandtobeencouragedbytheirexampleofdiscipleshipanddevotiontoChristJesus.IthasbeenthecustomofUBEwheneveritgathersasaregionalandnationalbodytorememberandcelebratethelivesofourrecentlydepartedbrothersandsistersinChrist.AbouttheUnionofBlackEpiscopalians."Setusfree,OGod,fromeverybondofprejudiceandfear...thatwemayshowforthinourlivesthereconcilingloveandtruefreedomofGod..."Godactsonthebehalfoftheoppressed.TheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansstandsinthecontinuingtraditionofmorethan200yearsofBlackleadershipintheEpiscopalChurch.BeginningwiththeestablishmentofSt.ThomasEpiscopalChurchbyAbsalomJonesin1794inthecityofPhiladelphiathroughtheelectionofBarbaraHarrisasSuffraganBishopofMassachusettsandtheelectionofMichaelCurryasthe27thPresidingBishopoftheEpiscopalChurch,therehasalwaysbeenastrongcorpsofBlackChristiansintheEpiscopalChurch:peoplelikeJamesHolly,HenryDelaney,JohnWalker,TollieCaution,CharlesLawrence,DeborahHarmonHines,andcountlessothers.Organizedin1968astheUnionofBlackClergyandLaity,theUnionistheproudinheritoroftheworkofthesepeopleandearlierorganizations,theConvocationofColoredClergyandtheConferenceofChurchWorkersAmongColoredPeople,alldedicatedtotheministryofBlacksintheEpiscopalChurch.ThenamewaschangedtotheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansin1971.TheUnionofBlackEpiscopaliansisaconfederationofmorethan55chaptersandinterestgroupsthroughoutthecontinentalUnitedStatesandtheCaribbean.TheUnionalsohasmembersinCanada,Africa,GreatBritain,andLatinAmerica.

The letter to the Hebrews reminds us that “we aresurrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.” And so we gather on this night to remember those saints andancestors who have gone before us and on whose shoulders we stand. We take this time to ask for theirintercessions and to be encouraged by their example of discipleship and devotion to Christ Jesus.
