Happy Fall Ya’ll… After the summer we’ve sweltered through here in North Carolina, I look forward to cooler temperatures, apples, a fire in the fireplace, and a little more stitching time. The garden is through for the season and the schedule is slowing down. Now is the time for quiet evenings of appliqué – before the holidays swoop in and take over! I hope you do have a little more time for another project, because The Appliqué Society would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you our Postcard to Placement Challenge. Laura Estes, a member from Odessa, Washington came up with this wonderful idea that will provide an opportunity for TAS members to share their appliqué talent on a small project. These small quilts will be curated into a traveling display to promote membership and appreciate for the art of appliqué. The process is simple. We’ve taken the idea of turning a post card from Odessa, Washington (since that’s where this idea was born), into a small quilt, 14-inches by 18-inches. The entry fee for this is $15.00 and that fee will cover the postcard and return postage for your quilt. When you pay the fee, you will be sent a postcard featuring the city of Odessa. From there, it’s up to you how you interpret this into a small, “placemat” sized quilt. Reproduce in some way some aspect of this postcard – the theme of the postcard or to create a design featuring the color theme of the postcard. While the postcard should be predominately appliqué – hand, machine, wool, fusible, or dimensional, everything else is up to you. We do ask that any embellishments be appropriate to the design and that the quilt be finished – top, batting, backing, quilted, and bound. It’s fine to get someone else to quilt it for you, too. Please make sure there is a label on the back with your name, membership number, shipping information, and a phone number or email address.

You should submit a picture of the finished quilt to The Appliqué Society. These pictures will be posted in our members’ only section, where our members will have a chance to vote on their favorite. The owner of the winning quilt will then have their hometown featured as the subject of the next Postcard to Placemat Challenge.

To get started, mail your $15.00 entry fee to TAS Postcard to Placemat Challenge, c/o Jeannie Hunt, 26115 191st Pl SE, Covington, WA 98042-5006. Inspiration postcard and in-structions for mailing completed placement will be sent via return mail. Once the voting is over, the top ten quilts will be curated into a traveling display for TAS. These quilts will tour the coun-try for 2017 – 2018, beginning with the Odessa, Washington Quilt show April 28 and 29, 2017. The deadline for entries is March 1, 2017. CHAPTER NEWS. . . Stateline Appliquérs Monthly Meeting

It’s hard to believe it has been 2 years since we became a TAS Chapter., Stateline Appliquérs. We are lo-

cated in Rockford, IL., near the stateline of Illinois and Wisconsin. July 2014 was our initial meeting

where 21 interested quilters attended. Our meetings are held monthly at our local library and now about

12 of us are regulars. Our Meetings begin with the Pledge of Allegiance, then we discuss any TAS news,

and share any news in our local quilt community. We go around the tables for ‘show and share’, showing

our work in progress and sharing the story behind it. The remainder of the afternoon is spent doing what

we all like best, appliqué. . .

Our group is made up of many award winning quilters both in local and national shows, quilt designers , a

quilt appraiser and lots of us improving our skills each day. We have had some mini workshops within our

group showing each other different techniques to hand appliqué. Many of us are now busy working to fin-

ish our projects to show in our local quilt guild, Sinnissippi Quilters Biennial Quilt Show in May 2017.

I am very proud of our SA members for stepping up to help keep the TAS going. Dee Pitthan, volunteered

to serve on the TAS board, Coleen O’Kane is the TAS Membership Chair and Barbara Clucas is the TAS

Newsletter Editor. Karen Grover was featured recently in the TAS newsletters when she offered her pat-

tern, “There’s a Cat in My Baltimore Album”. These gals are all very talented and committee to TAS and

are doing an outstanding job. I know you’ll all agree!!!

A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever…

And the 2016 Give Away Quilt should bring joy to one lucky member for a lifetime. The

quilt shown in the picture will be given away at random to a member of The Appliqué Socie-

ty before the end of 2016. We would like to thank TAS members Ursula Yeo, Patricia John-

son, Shirley Schmidt, Maureen Goldsmith, Eileen Morrison, Joan Jones, Janet Skulsky, Dar-

lene Bott and Sandra Lounsbury for working on this quilt. The pattern is "Vintage Dreams"

and the designer is Colette Belt. We had Ms. Belt’s written permission to use her pattern.

For the block that I am working on I have made these five sweet flowers. I’m so thrilled

with these little flowers and the way there are made that I decided to share it with you.

The first illustration shows to

make each petal with straight sides

rather than slanted as they look.

After you make all five flower pet-

als, gather along the bottom of the

edge of the petals. If you can, keep

all five petals on the needle. Trying

to hold all the petals together pull

the thread through the bottom of

the petals and go immediately back

into the first petal and go all the

way across the bottom of the first.

Still holding all the petals, gently

pull the thread to form a circle.

Pull the thread up tight and secure on the back of the flower. And there you have your cute

little flower with small tucks around the middle. I have also put a tiny bit of washable glue

to secure the center. Now it is ready to be sewn on the block.
