SEDA’s Got Talent! - Part II

Well, last issue our cover story featured
the work of USDF Art Contest winners
Kalie Beckers and Nicole Landreneau. We
knew SEDA had a very talented pool of folks,
and asked you to send in examples of your
‘talents’. We weren’t disappointed! This issue,
we’re pleased to bring you more opportunities
to see what our members are doing...outside of
the barn and show ring.
Margaret Rice, our dedicated newsletter
mailing maven, is also quite artistic. She has a
BFA from LSU but really didn’t start a painting
career until about six years ago. Once her
children were out of the house, she had the
time to paint! After attending a local painting
class to refresh her skills, she started painting
animals. And it grew into a business where now
she does almost all commissioned portraits of
people’s pets. She thought that with her horse
interests she would be doing mostly horses,
but it turns out that she does more dogs than
anything. She works primarily in oils on board
rather than canvas.
Margaret has also won some awards and
national notice. Her painting of Dr. Karen
Wolfsheimer’s dog was featured on the cover
of the December 1st issue of the American
Veterinary Medical Association Journal. Locally,
she’s entered her work in the Animals in Art
Show at the LSU Vet school, where she’s been
accepted for the last five years, and last year
won Best in Show with a painting of thirteen
foxhounds.
The Stoyanoffs, Svenya and Sabine, are
an artistic crew, too. Their talents run the

Welcome to the New Year. Hope you’re
ready for it! Personally, I was perfectly
satisfied with the old year and have no desire
to break in a new one already. Oh well, I don’t
seem to have much choice in the matter. So,
here we go...
We’re not wasting any time getting down
to business in 2010. For starters, we’d like
to welcome a new face to the SEDA Board.
Christy Sanantonio has been elected to take on
the job of SEDA Secretary. She will be taking
over from Elaine Harmon, whose trusty pen
and notebook have kept our Board meetings
in order and well documented. I’m sure Elaine
will be quite happy to pass on her collection
of papers and notebooks. Thank you, Elaine,
for your many years of dedicated and diligent
service ... and welcome aboard, Christy!
I had the opportunity to spend a good bit
of time with Christy at the USDF Convention
in Austin where we shared a painfully long
ride in a shuttle bus, lodging, meals and a
few good laughs. It was a most enjoyable few
days! As our SEDA delegate at the convention,
Christy came back with a good report to share.
You’ll find her impression of the experience
beginning on page eight.
The highlight for me at the convention was
receiving the GMO award for best newsletter
layout and design. This is the fourth year in a
row for us, and it is truly an honor. The funny
thing was, SEDA won both first place and
honorable mention for our newsletter. What
are the chances of that? I was very excited to
accept the plaque from George Williams – it’s
as close as I’m likely to ever get to equestrian
royalty! Now, if only I could find someone
who got a picture of that!
But, I digress...back to the task at hand...It
seems that new faces don’t end with our Board
members; there are quite a few new equines to
report on as well. Look for all the dirt on the
new horses and their respective families in the
latest scintillating installment of Barn Dirt!
And speaking of installments – part two
of our report on our talented SEDA members
fills the cover of this issue. I’m truly impressed
by the depth of talent out there, and I’m sure
there’s even more ... but you didn’t send your
info in! Don’t be shy! I’ll be happy to include it
in a future issue; but, in the meantime, don’t
miss out on the artists we’ve featured this time;
it’s sure to give you a different perspective on
these members.
Looking at things from a different
perspective is something you can read about
in the experiences of our SEDA Scholarship
winners. Two of them shared their story with
us this issue, and I’m certain we can all benefit
from what they learned as we train during the
rest of the year.
Happy reading and happy riding! S

gamut from painting and photography to
dog training.
A self-taught artist, Sabine likes
to paint in her spare time, when the
inspiration strikes, and when she’s
‘finished with all the horse poo.’ Generally,
she’s inspired by something she sees or
when something special happens. Most
of her paintings are pastel, watercolor
or sketches. She loves painting nature,
animals, and horses, of course!
Daughter Svenya, 6, is getting her
brushes wet, too. She loves painting
– especially horses – and could be an
accomplished artist herself one day.
In addition to painting, Sabine has
20 years of experience training dogs.
She used to compete in Schutzhund
Training, a sport initially only for German
Shepherd dogs which originated in her
home country of Germany. The purpose
of this type of training is to determine
if the dog can perform in the manner
that the breed was intended, rather than
simply evaluating a dog’s appearance.
It is very demanding and few dogs pass.
Currently, however, she offers obedience
training and helps dogs with behavioral
problems. Her philosophy: happy dogs,
happy owners.
As if that’s not enough, Sabine also
dabbles in photography. Her subjects are
mostly wild or domestic animals and lots
of nature pictures.
Did you know that Sabine used to be
a jockey? Before moving to the States, she
rode racehorses in Madrid, Spain. When
she moved here, she started training,
raising and galloping racehorses – until
Svenya arrived. Now, she enjoys dressage
and riding her horse, Mr. Big.
Another of our talented members is
Bonnie Bendzans. She’s been a member
since 1992, and is the one who created
our fabulous logo.
For the past ten years, she’s been
designing, collecting and selling
equestrian jewelry, which can be found
locally at Bridles & Britches (or on her web
site www.threehorsestudio.com).
After Katrina, she and her husband
bought HER dream farm, located in
Folsom, and run a small personalized
boarding facility (www.farawayfarm.
homestead.com).
Last May, she retired after 28 years
as art director/graphic designer with the
Department of Defense, in New Orleans.
She’s shown her works on paper
(drawings and paintings) at several
galleries in New Orleans and has had
one-woman shows at Icons Gallery. Her
work hangs in the New Orleans Court
House, Chicago, Texas, Virginia and
many other places in the USA. She’s been
commissioned to do horse portraits and
also likes to create vessels from found
objects. She’s also made a few cabinets
from found cypress doors!
An avid photographer, Bonnie loves
recording everything she see on her farm.
She also loves their two Borzoi brothers,
Vincent and Theo.
Our members certainly are a talented
bunch! No doubt, there are more ‘beyond
the barn’ talents in our membership – if
you’d like to be mentioned in an upcoming
issue, please send in your information! S

And the winner
is….US! Yay! For
the fourth year in
a row, Off Course
has won the USDF
Award for the
best newsletter.
Apparently some
other GMOs are getting a trifle peeved at
the repetitious nature of the prize giving
and brought a proposal before the Board
of Governors for a vote. It was suggested
that any GMO which has won for two
consecutive years, should not be eligible
the third year, to give the “also rans” a look
in. That was voted down, so they are going
to have to pry that award out of Nicole’s
tenacious grasp next year.
I’m not sure my amateurish scribblings
are worthy of a fourth-time-in- a- row USDF
Award winning newsletter, but since it’s
raining again and I’ve got nothing better
to do, you’re stuck with them.
Everyone who was anyone was in
Austin for the USDF Annual Convention.
Jane Savoie, Debbie McDonald and Steffen
Peters were delighted to be hobnobbing
and rubbing shoulders with the likes
of Nicole “did I win another award?”
Landreneau, Christy Sanantonio, Francie
Stirling, David Banister, Vicky Busch,
Laura Freeman and Deborah Epperson.
Christy, David and Laura all picked up
their USDF medals at the banquet. Deb
Epperson picked up her USDFDSHB (I’d
like to buy a vowel please…) HOY award
for her yearling gelding, Lascaux, as well
as the All-Breeds Award for the NADWA
yearling gelding. It’s really great that one
of our “back yard breeders” so ably held
her own against the big boys such as
Hilltop Farm. She has obviously hit on the
right formula.
When she wasn’t busy winning
newsletter awards, Nicole “Oops I did it
again!” Landreneau and Christy attended
the welcome party hosted by CTDS.
Christy’s face when she received the
biggest glass of wine she’d ever seen, was
priceless. It was served to the brim in a
jumbo maragarita glass. After the second
one she had no problems sleeping.
Nancy Burba and Ronda Ritchie were
there to see Vicky Busch riding Ronda’s
horse, Rasputin, in the symposium given
by Jan Brink. Maybe that should be
symposiummmmmmmmmm! He’s cute.
It was three full days on how Jan works
through the training
scale using exercises
to build the horse’s
confidence. Three
zones of mental
training are utilized;
comfort zone, stress
zone and panic zone.
The comfort and
stress zones should
be addressed in
each daily ride. That
must be where I’m
going wrong – I skip the preliminaries
and go straight to the panic zone. It saves
time. Vicky and Rasputin did a wonderful
job proving what a great team they are.
Everybody was so excited at dinner
afterwards that they didn’t notice the
appetizer they ordered arrived after the
entrees.
The footing at the venue was so stony
and the weather was freezing so Nancy
Burba volunteered to pick up rocks
after every tractor drag on the Friday so
she could move around and get warm.
Squatting to harvest bits of stone certainly
got her warmed up. It also reminded
her of how little work she’s done since
injuring her back in an aerial dismount.
On Saturday she could hardly climb the
stairs because her legs were so sore.
Also rubbing shoulders with the
rich and famous is Lori Summers. She
got to hang with Kid Rock who played
a gig at the Landstuhl base and visited
with the injured soldiers. Lori has also
taken delivery of a beautiful BMW M3
whose convertible qualities she has yet to
enjoy since Southern Germany has been
blanketed in snow for the last month.
Carol Petranek spent three weeks in
Europe, basing herself with Lori…on the
base (duh!). From there she made forays
to the far flung reaches of Amsterdam and
Prague and generally had an absolutely
great time despite the language barrier.

Corinne Titus, husband Mike and
daughter Cammy were in Amish country
over Thanksgiving. I’m a very mature
person and will type the following sentence
with a straight face and no emoticons…
They left Hokessin and went through Gap
to get to Intercourse, PA where Corinne
accosted a man with a large pair of Belgians.
The horses’ tack was just exquisite and
Corinne made it her mission to find out
from whence it came. She was directed
to a little shop with a quaint sign outside
that said “No Tourists!” Realizing that this
couldn’t possibly apply to her, cash in hand,
she crossed the threshold whereupon she
found herself 100 years in the past. A
coal heater, worn out wooden floors and
gas lights illuminating rows upon rows
of hand-made tack greeted her, which is
more than can be said for the denizens
within. The women were all in long dresses
and the men had beards to the middle of
their chests. It was like an audience with
ZZ Top but without the fuzzy guitars…
and hot rods...and cool music. They were
talking their own language which sounded
like a mixture of German and Dutch
and roughly translated probably meant
“Go away! Didn’t thou read the sign?”
Bottom line is that
the bottom line won
out and Marquee
and Marigny got
beautiful hand-tooled
Amish leather halters
for Christmas.
U n f o r t u n a t e l y,
no pictures were
allowed in the shop,
but Intercourse
was the highlight
of Corinne’s
Thanksgiving.
Ted White has
been a bit glum. He had to retire Carolina
Knockout due to DSLD (Degenerative
Suspensory Ligament Disease). Carrie
is none the wiser and is currently out
standing in her field. Someone has to mow
the rye grass and make Ted happy when
he looks out the window. But, the shows
must go on and Ted has imported a new
guy from England – Loughnatousa Brown
Bear. I can’t wait to hear Andy trying to
come to grips with that one! He is a 9 year
old Irish Sport Horse with large horse
shoes to fill, but hopefully he and Ted
will waste no time developing their own
special bond.
Mollie Phelps is eagerly awaiting the
day she can get back on a horse after
suffering through emergency gall bladder
surgery in September. In the meantime,
she can’t wait to see everyone at the SEDA
awards banquet.
FYI – After a spousectomy, Joanie
Cooper is back to being Joanie Mintz.
Janel Martin has a new yellow lab
puppy. At the time of writing he was as yet
unnamed, but what is certain is his future
career as a duck hunter.
I’ve been told that my Mini Me,
Cameron, should now be referred to as my
Medium Me. She needs to stop growing.
It’s getting too expensive. I’ve had to buy
her a new helmet, boots, jacket, pants
etc. There’s only so long you can force a
child’s head into a too-tight helmet and
boots before child protective services
come a-calling. Since she was getting all
new gear, we went ahead and got another
horse as well. Somebody shoot me now.
However, Don Giovanni is a lovely 11 year
old imported Oldenburg by Don Schufro,
and how could I possibly say no? My
husband found many ways to say it, but I
figured he didn’t mean it.
New Year’s Resolutions:
1. Must not buy any more horses
2. Really must not buy any more horses
3. Probably won’t buy any more horses
4. He’s cute. Is he for sale?
Send me the dirt.
Ted White’s new mount,Loughnatousa Brown Bear.
Cameron Dauterive takes Don Giovannni for a spin.

It is with great sadness that Oak Hill
Ranch announces that on October 16,
2009 their internationally renowned
Elite Danish warmblood stallion, Rambo,
passed away at the age of 23.
Rambo was born in Denmark, by Racot
out of Vigga (by Ibikus x Colombo). Since
1993 he was owned by Richard Freeman,
Jr., of Oak Hill Ranch in Folsom, LA.
Rambo himself had many
accomplishments, but his most notable
accomplishment was with Leif Sorensen
when he was short-listed for the Danish
team in the1998 World Equestrian Games
in Rome, and the 2000 Olympics in
Sydney.
He was imported to the U.S. where
he trained and competed with Heather
Blitz. He became a winner at Dressage at
Devon and also the Region 3 Grand Prix
Champion. Rambo didn’t stop there, but
continued building his legacy by producing
four licensed sons and numerous medal
mares in Denmark and the
United States.
Some of the medal mares
born in United States were
Arabella (owned by Denise
Arroyo and bred by Oak Hill
Ranch) who received a silver
medal and Felicity (bred by Anne
Hornbeak) who received a bronze
medal.
His offspring are too numerous to
mention, however, here are a few of the
regional notables.
Rambo produced a few jumping
horses, such as the Grand Prix gelding,
Sullivan, as well as the up-and-coming
mare, Adriatica. Both horses are making
names for themselves as Rambo offspring
in the jumping arena.
Rambo also produced horses in the
International Grand Prix dressage arena:
Otto, ridden by Todd Flettrichs (formerly
ridden by Heather Blitz); Arabella, the silver
medal mare, owned
by Denise Arroyo
and again also
ridden by Heather
Blitz; and Siril
Helljesen’s Stall-
K’s, Vemmetoftes
Rainman and Rune
Willum’s Dansk
Avistryk’s Leroy
just to name a few.
Rambo also
produced many
Regional winners
at the FEI levels
such as: Gambler, owned and ridden Anne
Hornbeak; Roux, owned and ridden by
Allison Barca; Rascale, owned by Stirling
Farms and ridden by David Banister;
Ricotta, owned and ridden by Deborah
Gordon; Regalia, owned and ridden by
Rochelle McPherson; Checkers, owned
and ridden by Nancy Burba, as well as
many others.
Over the years, Rambo also produced
USDF “Horse of the Year” in both
Dressage, Dressage Sport Horse and in-
hand. To name two recent horses: 2008
Horse of Year, Panama, bred and owned
by Oak Hill Ranch; and 2009 USDF Breed
Horse winner, Leonardo 819 owned by Jen
Moskal.
Rambo leaves a legacy behind that will
not be forgotten. He will be remembered
through his many generations of
champions, with many more to come.
Rambo’s legacy will live on throughout
the world and he will be missed by all who
had the pleasure of knowing such a noble
stallion. S

Attending the USDF Convention for the first
time was quite an adventure! I had many
fabulous learning opportunities and educational
experiences in store for me in Austin, Texas — it
was an honor to be chosen as the delegate to
represent SEDA.
The convention was held at the beautiful
Renaissance Hotel. Shortly after checking in and
reviewing the Convention agenda, I discovered
that the next four days would be extremely
busy. Walking through the grand lobby that
was magnificently decorated for Christmas, I
could feel the excitement and energy around
me; it was quite thrilling to be surrounded by
dressage enthusiasts, trainers, and Olympians.
A couple of former SEDA delegates who
had previously attended the convention had
thoroughly prepared me for all that I would
experience while attending the Regional
Meetings and the famed Board of Governors
(BOG) meetings. (Thank you Nicole and Laura
for your guidance!) I wanted to make the most
of being at the convention as a SEDA delegate
by attending as many meetings as I could and
absorbing as much information possible. At
the Regional Meetings, we discussed a plethora
of items at length such as budgets, funding
for 2010, USDF, The Dressage Foundation,
preparations as hosts of the 2009 Convention,
and GMO web sites, just to name a few. These
meetings also were a great opportunity to meet
many of the delegates from around Region 9.
I attended the GMO Council meeting, where
a huge topic of discussion was GMO web site/
newsletter awards. The GMO Council was
going to propose at the Board of Governors
meeting that any GMO or author that has won
first place in any division of these categories
for two consecutive years would not be eligible
for nomination in the said category for a third
consecutive year. The reason for this proposal
was that certain GMOs (*ahem* SEDA, among
others) have dominated their award category/
division for several years and that limiting the
number of consecutive years a GMO could win
an award in a category/division would provide
more GMOs the opportunity for recognition
on the national level. An hour of heated and
exhausting discussion about this motion ensued,
and then delegates were ready to take it to a vote
at the BOG meeting the next day. I am happy to
report that this motion was defeated and that I
am looking forward to SEDA winning again like
we did this year. Our fabulous SEDA newsletter
and web site (and the Region 9 web site) is
designed and maintained by our own talented
Nicole Landreneau, whose hard work and
dedication have been rewarded and recognized
at the USDF National level for the past few

...your horse gets new shoes more often than you do.
...your mouth waters at the sight of a truck full of hay.
...every time you drive past a road construction site you think what nice jumps the barricades would make.
...you consider a golf course as a waste of good pasture land.
...you buy duct tape by the case, and carry rolls in your pocketbook, briefcase, backpack, and car trunk.
...you realize finding a horse shoe is truly lucky because you’ve saved ten bucks.
...someone does something nice for you and you pat them on the neck and say ‘good boy’.
...no one wants to ride in your car because they’ll get sweet feed and hay in their socks and on their clothes...but that’s ok because you’ll have to rearrange all the tack to make room for them anyway!

Board Members Present: Lynn Quast,
David Banister, Elaine Harmon, Janel
Martin, Leslie Morris, Nicole Landreneau,
Maria Cowan
Guest: Laura Freeman
The meeting was called to order by the
President at 7PM.
The minutes from the previous
meeting were approved
Treasurer’s Report: Janel presented
a current Profit & Loss Statement and
reported that SEDA is fiscally sound. Lynn
moved to accept the Treasurer’s Report as
presented. Elaine seconded the motion.
The report was approved.
Eventing Committee Report: Lynn
updated the Board on having jumps
built for the cross country course.
Lynn reported that Jeff Kibbie, a USEA-
Recognized Course Designer, would be
in town Dec 18, 2009-Jan15, 2010 and
would be available to design and build
cross-country jumps for SEDA. The
estimate for designing and building eight
to ten portable cross-country jumps (on
skids) would be approximately $5,000-
$6,000 dollars. This would allow SEDA to
have enough jumps for Green As Grass,
Beginner Novice, and Novice courses at
Lagniappe.
Janel moved to budget a maximum
of $6,000 to Jeff Kibbie for course design
and construction of eight to ten portable
cross-country jumps to be built between
Dec 18, 2009-Jan 15, 2010.
David seconded the motion. The Board
voted and the motion carried.
Future plans include: Janel will devise
a plan for cross-country jump sponsorship
and report back to the Board the possibility
of a Schooling Horse Trial in the Spring
once the course is complete.
The Board is very excited about this
opportunity and looks forward to offering
the membership and the eventing
community an updated and improved
cross-country course.
Membership Committee Report: Maria
reports that membership renewal cards
have been mailed. In an effort to increase
membership, she will send membership
information to people who have shown at
Fleur de Leap in the past who are not yet
members.
Dressage Committee Report: Leslie
and Janel are organizing the SEDA Year
End Awards Banquet which will be held
Jan 24, 2010 at Benedict’s Restaurant in
Mandeville.
A few suggestions were made regarding
Amen Corner (ie: ring placement and
judge’s box). Janel made notes of the
suggestions and will forward them to
Rene and report back to the Board.
Newsletter/Web Site Committee Report:
Nicole reported that once again SEDA has
won the USDF Award for the newsletter in
the category of Best Layout and Design for
a GMO with 75-174 members. SEDA also
received an Honorable Mention for the
web site in the category of GMO with 75-
174 members. Congratulations SEDA and
especially Nicole Landreneau for all of her
hard work!
Foundation: Discussion was held
on the need for a charitable donation
foundation as a way for people to make tax
free donations to SEDA. The Board felt as
though a Foundation of this type was not
something they could pursue at this time
but would be open to further discussion in
the future.
Board Elections: Lynn reported
that the terms of the current Board of
Directors will be ending December 30,
2009. Notification will be sent to the
membership – as per the SEDA By-laws
– requesting nominations. Nominations
should be sent to the Vice President, David
Banister, by November 30, 2009. Ballots
will be sent to the membership early
in December. The first meeting of the
new Board of Directors will be January
24, 2010 following the Annual Awards
Banquet.
The next meeting will be held January
24, 2010 at Benedict’s Restaurant in
Mandeville.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15PM.
Respectfully submitted by Elaine
Harmon. S

As dressage riders, we all know that
training a dressage horse can be a
frustrating task; working day after day
to accomplish personal goals while in
the saddle. Most of the time, great work
leads to great results. My horse, Cayenne,
and I put hours of effort each week into
achieving roundness — a natural ability
for some horses and a barrier for others.
Cayenne has always been an amazing
partner, and he has the best work ethic of
any horse in the world. But, I soon realized
that in order to become a First Level team,
we needed more than our everyday
workouts. I admit I was starting to lose
hope that my dream of moving up would
ever be a reality. Fortunately, this summer
I received the large envelope containing
my key to success — my SEDA scholarship.
My trainer, Ms. Lisa Head,
recommended that I work with clinician
Anne Hornbeak. After my weekend
with Ms. Hornbeak, I have learned more
than exercises and the importance of
suppleness and flexibility.
Upon arriving at Hornbeak Stables,
another rider was training with Ms.
Hornbeak in her covered arena. This horse
and rider performed beautifully, and I was
slightly intimidated by their performance.
When I mounted Cayenne, Ms.
Hornbeak watched him and immediately
saw my predicament. To my surprise,
right away she knew what to do in order
to help me achieve a First Level frame. She
taught me that the most important step
missing in my training is getting him to
use the correct muscles and come over his
back and through his neck.
We practiced a lot of dramatic bending
to the inside and out, which forced him
to submit his jaw and break at the poll.
Circles, direction changes, and lateral
work really helped get Cayenne moving
over his back. I was so impressed — I never
knew my horse could move so beautifully!
We had finally felt that “ah-ha!”
moment that dressage riders strive to
grasp. The hard work we’ve put in for the
past few years finally pieced together, and
now I can move on to succeeding in the
show ring, hopefully moving up to First
Level very soon.
Along with this incredible riding
experience, I got to watch other beautiful
dressage riders. Coming from a hunter/
jumper barn, I very rarely get to see
riders of my discipline. Simply watching
these horses broadened my experience
as a dressage rider. Though they looked
wonderful, I became more confident in
knowing that that even these great riders
have difficulties with their training.
After being trained by Ms. Anne,
combining her techniques with what I’ve
learned over the years from Ms. Lisa has
fit together like a puzzle, and that weekend
was more educational to me than any
other riding experience I’ve ever had.
The amazing thing about dressage
is, no matter how hard we work, there is
always something that can be improved.
After this clinic, I learned that the things
that once seemed impossible CAN be
achieved. I would certainly say that Ms.
Anne Hornbeak changed me as a rider,
both physically and mentally.
Though I’m only a teenager, I’ve
realized the importance of having a goal.
The never-ending goals embedded in
this sport we all love gives us the most
amazing sense of accomplishment. The
opportunity to be a part of this clinic was
such a rewarding experience, and I’m
blessed to have been a part of it.
Thank you so much, SEDA, for giving
me this opportunity! S

USDF Executive Board Statement on Animal
Welfare
In response to a recent incident at
an international competition, the USDF
Executive Board has issued the following
official statement:
The USDF does not approve of training
techniques such as hyperflexion especially
when taken to an extreme. While we
recognize that we can not control how
riders train at home, excessive techniques
should not be tolerated
at competitions. The
USDF feels that it is very
important that as a sport
we police ourselves and
encourage the USEF and
FEI to call upon their
licensed officials to ensure that cruel and
abusive riding does not happen at our
competitions.
The USDF agrees with and strongly
supports the FEI position as stated in the
November 17 press release and in particular
the statement: “The FEI acknowledges and
welcomes public opinion and will continue
to ensure that the welfare of the horse,
which has been central to this debate, will
remain its absolute priority.”
In addition, you can read the USDF
Statement on Animal Welfare or the official
announcement from the FEI. S
2010 USDF Directory Available Online for
Members
The United States Dressage Federation
(USDF) is pleased to offer the 2010 USDF
Directory online, exclusively for members
only, as a continuation of USDF’s Going
Green Campaign. When USDF members
log into the USDF Web site, they will be
able to access and download the directory
in its entirety, eliminating the need to print
and mail hardcopies as has been done in
the past.
The USDF Directory, printed yearly and
effective for the entire competition season,
contains all of USDF’s awards programs
information, championship rules, test
movements, membership information,
arena set-up information, and listings of
dressage officials.
“With the success of the online
magazine and our other ‘going green’
efforts, making the directory readily
available for download seemed like the
next logical step. The online version will
also allow members to print and download
the specific parts of the directory that

Statement by the United States Equestrian
Federation on the Passage of the “Progressive
List” of Permitted Medications at the FEI
General Assembly in Copenhagen, Denmark
The USEF is supportive of the rule change
allowing certain non-steroidal medications
included on the “Progressive List” passed at the
FEI General Assembly in Copenhagen earlier
this month. The list includes medications that
would be allowed in FEI competitions and which
are already permitted in USEF competitions.
These medications are not considered by
WADA to be performance enhancing in human
athletes and because of this distinction, they are
not prohibited. While it is the human athlete that
is solely responsible in making the decision to use
these non-performance enhancing medications,
it is the responsibility of the FEI to protect and
ensure the welfare of our equine partners. By
placing restrictions on the use of the NSAIDs to
include low level administrations and continuing
a rigorous program of veterinary examinations
and inspections, the FEI is providing for equine
welfare while still prohibiting the non-judicious
use of these and other
medications consistent with
the Clean Sport initiative.
While fully supportive
of this change the USEF
believes that the implementation of the rule on
January 1, 2010 may be problematic.
The addition of certain NASIDs to the
permitted medication list will be new to many
NFs and an education and communication plan
needs to be implemented before the rule takes
effect. FEI laboratories need to adopt standard
identical protocols for testing so as to assure a
level playing field for all athletes throughout the
world.
The USEF is also concerned that the
premature implementation of this new rule
may impact team participation at the Alltech
FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in
2010. Without a carefully prepared education
and communication program, a premature
implementation of this rule is risky and has
high potential of causing a series of unintended
consequences.
The USEF believe the passage of the
“Progressive List” is a step forward in a
commitment to horse welfare. The General
Assembly of the FEI has made its decision
but, we strongly encourage the FEI to delay
implementation until such time that the
laboratory procedures are in place and a
communication and education plan has been
launched.

Carolina Knock Out Headed for RetirementBy Ted White
It is with great sadness that I must retire my wonderful Cleveland Bay/Eng TB cross mare, Carolina Knock Out. Carrie was recently diagnosed with Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD), which is a systemic connective tissue disease. In the five years Carrie and I competed together, I learned a lifetime of horsemanship. She adjusted from the English climate to that of south Louisiana, experienced Hurricane Katrina, and never missed a
step. Only two blips appear on her record, both my fault (senior moments, I admit). She won eight of her last ten horse trials at Training Level (a 2nd and 5th in the other two on her dressage score) and finished second in her only Prelim/Training horse trial. In 2008, she finished all her horse trials on her dressage score and ended up eight on the USEA’s Leaderboard. In our short time together, she won four national championships from the Cleveland Bay Horse Society of North America (in versatility & eventing) and twice won its Apple of my Eye Award (top CB mare in the country), a USDF All Breed award at Third Level and two Performance Horse Registry Silver Stirrup National Championships in eventing. She also won numerous regional and local awards in both eventing and dressage. Carrie is truly a horse of a lifetime. I will cherish whatever time I have left with her and she will know how much she is loved every moment of every day.

USDF Convention ... continued from page 8
years…as it should be!
The Board of Governors meetings are
something that every USDF member should
experience at least once. Delegates learned
that our current USDF President, Sam Barish,
will be stepping down at the end of the year. It
was an enthusiastic and unanimous vote by all
of the delegates to elect Vice President George
Williams as the new USDF President.
Everything from A to Z concerning
the USDF was discussed at these meetings
which took place over two days. It was quite
interesting to listen to the passionate pleas of
some delegates about certain motions that
were brought to the table, especially when it
came to the budget. It has been several years
since the last membership fee increase, so
it was voted on to increase all membership
fees across the board, from Participating
Memberships to Lifetime Memberships. There
is a new low-cost option for membership that
will be offered beginning next year, currently
titled the Education Membership. This type of
membership is for people who are interested
in the sport of dressage (for example, an AQHA
member) but may not want to or be able to join
a GMO.
Even though the BOG meetings were very
lengthy and overwhelming at times, I was so
empowered as a delegate to be able to contribute
with my votes and represent SEDA in the best
way possible. I see my role as a USDF Participating
Member in a whole new light and feel so much
more connected to the sport that I am so dearly
passionate about. I highly encourage you to
view the BOG Council and Committee Reports
that are available on the USDF web site at

governance/2009BOGReports.pdf.
One of the highlights of my trip was
attending an intimate Fireside Chat with
2008 Olympian Debbie McDonald (who rode
Brentina) and former Olympian and current
Olympic Judge, Linda Zang. Both were in
attendance at the convention because they were
being honored at the USDF Salute Gala and
Annual Awards Banquet; Linda Zang was being
inducted into the USDF Roemer Hall of Fame
as was Brentina. Debbie McDonald is such a
humble, gracious, and an outstanding class act
all around, and was so incredibly inspiring as she
told us fond stories about Brentina and the start
of her journey and career in dressage. I was even
able to have a conversation one-on-one with her
and could barely contain my excitement! I am
still on Cloud 9…please, somebody pull me back
down!
The USDF Convention also offered five
USDF University Education Sessions, of which
I attended the Jane Savoie seminar titled
Finding Emotional Balance. She is one of the
most positive and animated riders I have met
and offered participants an array of tips on
how to be mentally strong at shows and during
schooling rides at home. I also was able to meet
Dr. Hilary Clayton and attend her seminar,
Balanced Horse – Balanced Rider. It was so
fascinating to learn about the science of riding
and the biomechanics of the combination of
horse and rider together.
At the conclusion of my trip, I was fortunate
to be able to attend the USDF Salute Gala and
Awards Banquet to accept my USDF Bronze
Medal along with SEDA members David
Banister, who received both his Silver and

ANTICIPATION: I have won the Adult
Scholarship for a clinic from SEDA.
Yea! But, then I learn I must write an
article about my experience. Ick! Guess it’s
only fair, but now I have a lap top and I
can’t type worth a - - - What price for fame.
As the day approaches I am asked if I
am nervous. Of course not — I love lessons!
DAY 1: Whoops! I should have
been nervous because I am lazy and
Loma worked me hard (at least for my
standards). What an experience, though.
I have never had a lesson of any kind
(jumping or saddle seat) with a person of
such knowledge. I knew I had to get to the
computer to record a fraction of what she
had to say. Where to begin?
Forward—I had no idea. I thought I
was back at the races. Not really ... since
I have no idea how a racehorse moves.
But, we kept at it and I think we finally got
it—at least Godiva did. Then, on the bit,
more, a little more—super. Light with your
hands—use your fingers and wrists, not
your forearm. More forward—Yes! Keep
your contact on the outside rein with your
ring finger. Lightly. Now a 12 meter circle
(what’s that?, I think) Keep up your pace,
heels down—Yes! Finally, a walk and I, of
course, think it’s break time—but no. Walk
is a gait, too and one to work on—more
forward. Use your legs separately. Keep
her forward—yes! Now trot but don’t lose
your contact and forward.
Checking my watch I think it must
be the end of my lesson, but no—time to
work on the canter. I am exhausted just
thinking about it.
Let’s see if I can remember even a part
of this. Extended trot into the canter—I
thought ‘we need to slow down for this’.
Ok, let’s get this. Inside seat bone and
outside leg. Boy, will my jumper enjoy
this! Oh, now I have to what?—follow
the movement. Sure....lift the rib cage
and move the seat forward (TMI). Once
in awhile, I think I hear a ‘super’ ... but
maybe it was my imagination. Godiva has
picked this up and tries to read my mind
(easier that way). Forward in the canter,
too. I hate that word!
Actually, truth be told, it was a
wonderful day and lots of fun (work too).
Loma is so positive that she keeps me
going. Tomorrow is a new day and I will
survive. I actually got a couple of nice
words from Lynn and Tony. That is quite
the compliment!
DAY 2: I think I might be able to make
it through this lesson because I am sharing
it with Corinne Morrison and LeDon.
Maybe more breaks! ...Here we go!
Warming up and once again I’m
not forward enough, but this time I am
armed with spurs (baby spurs, but spurs,
nonetheless). So, on we go...more forward
but we need more collection (and I thought
I was getting it!). But, I am encouraged
by a friendly look from Corinne. Now, it
turns out she needs to go more forward,
too. But LeDon loves Godiva, so if I am in
front he gets going AND Godiva is getting
it. In fact, I think she is doing better at this
than I am. Oh well, we all need a partner.
So, on we go into the canter which
is better than yesterday (I think). But no
‘supers’ ... or maybe I am too pooped to
hear it.
The right bend gives us trouble so,
naturally, we work on that. And who
ever said ‘Dressage Queens’?—queens
don’t work this hard and I should know!
But Godiva is great and all I have to do is
sit—yes, a sitting trot. I’m not sure which I
am worse at—sitting trot or sitting canter!
Have they never heard of two point?
Finally, I think the lesson is finished
and Corinne (my friend?) wants to do leg
yields—are you kidding? All I have to do is
follow LeDon—not so simple as it sounds.
Oh well, there’s always next time. And
poor Leslie will have to put up with me till
Loma comes again.
So, now that I have all this in my mind,
I will go to a jumping show in a week and
see how my jumper, Luna likes it. She also
reads my mind.
REFLECTION: Thanks for letting me
be the adult scholarship winner this time.
I encourage everyone to apply. Eventually,
you will be chosen—this was my second try
and boy, is it worth it! I had a real respect
for dressage riders before, and now I am in
awe of all of you.
I love SEDA and all of its members.
Everyone is so nice and fun and I love to
come to the shows, too. S

New Funding Opportunity From the Dressage Foundation
The Dressage Foundation announced that a new fund has
been established. The Trip Harting Fund has been created with
donations to The Dressage Foundation from Trip’s friends and
supporters. This fund will provide grants up to $500 for a current
or graduate rider with a Pony Club Rating of B or A to assist in
attending the USDF “L” Education Program or USDF Instructor
Certification Program.
“Trip and I evented together when we were pony clubbers
and as adults, we both put our hearts and energy into providing
educational programs for young riders. Every time I got together
with Trip, he challenged me to find new ways to educate and give
valuable learning opportunities to our youth. I am thrilled that I
am part of making Trip’s wishes come true,” said Lendon Gray,
President and Chief Executive Officer, The Dressage Foundation.
Raised in Potomac, MD, where his father founded the Potomac
Horse Center, Trip Harting began riding when he was 6 years old.
By the age of 15, he became the youngest member of the U.S.
Pentathlon Team.
Harting received his U.S. Equestrian Federation judging
license, receiving his S rating in 1985. Ever since then, he was a
very popular S-rated judge. Up until his death, Harting taught 10
to 20 clinics and judged 25 to 30 shows per year throughout the
United States and around the world. S
