Silliman University Church 99th Anniversary

CHRONOLOGY OF EVENTS OF THE HISTORY OF THE SILLIMAN UNIVERSITY CHURCH: 1901-1916

1. 1901 - The evangelical (Protestant) ministry historically was first introduced

in Dumaguete by Rev. Leon P. Hills and Dr. David Hibbard when they estab-

lished the Dumaguete Mission Station.

2. 1903-1904 - Protestant services were regularly held, a formal place for regular

services was established in Silliman Hall (Assembly Hall) 3. July 8, 1906 - A Protestant chapel built outside Silliman Institute was dedi-

cated for the use by the Dumaguete congregation with new converts into Prot-

estantism by Evangelist Angel Sotto with regular services held in Visayan.

4. December 6, 1911 - The Presbyterian Church of Dumaguete was formally or-

ganized composed of the Dumaguete townspeople and many Sillimanians led

by the local evangelists, Messrs: Simeonh Emilia, Enrique Malahay, Restituto Malahay and Angel Sotto. Dr. Hibbard continued to lead the English services

in the Silliman Hall.

5. 1913-1914 - Dr. Robert Speer came to Silliman on an inspection trip for the

Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions (PBFM). He recommended that Silli-

man should have a full time pastor for the faculty and students, to lighten the workload of Dr. Hibbard who was both president and pastor.

6. The “Presbyterian Church of Dumaguete” formally established in 1911 was

part of the Philippine Presbytery which, while associated with the Presbyteri-

an Church USA, in 1911 was separated from the latter in 1913 to 1914. On the other hand, the church in Silliman was not part of the Philippine Presby-

tery and continued to be part of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Missions,

USA (PBFM). 6. 1916 - The PBFM sent Dr. Paul Doltz following the recommen-

dation of Dr. Speer to formally organize what would be the Silliman Student

Church (now Silliman University Church). He became the Vice president and Pastor, the choir conductor and he composed the lyrics of the Silliman Song. Organized church life within Silliman continued separately from the

Dumaguete Evangelical Church (now the Dumaguete City Church). All inter-nos were required to attend the English services. While SU was founded in

1901 and Silliman University Church (SUC) was formally organized in 1916, it

is proper and fitting that the anniversary date of SUC shall be August 28,

1916 on the major premise that as part and parcel of the SU, SUC had

evolved together with SU. 7. Early 1930 - When Silliman Institute was formally incorporated, it was

allowed the use of certain lands and buildings registered in the name of the

founding and supporting boards and held in trust by them for Silliman, including the holdings and facilities then used by the student—faculty church

congregation in Silliman. The Silliman holdings of the PBFM were eventually

turned over to the Silliman Corporation when under the Laurel-Langley

Agreement in 1964, Americans lost their parity rights to own real property in

the Philippines.

Scouting in Silliman University

While the Scouting movement worldwide has been in existence for the

last 104 years, scouting in Silliman has survived and is still viable after

93 years.

Troop 8 was organized by Dr. Paul Doltz with the New York Boy Scout

Council in 1922 which is the first Boy Scout troop in the Visayas. Then

Mr. Guy was registered as the Scoutmaster. The first boy who earned the highest Boy

Scout rank at Silliman Institute was Mr. Bill Raymond who hailed from lowa and de-

cided to stay in the Philippines all his life. Mr. Raymond was one of the early gradu-

ates in Chemistry from Silliman Institute.

Mr. Bill Raymond recalled that everyone wanted to become a Scout even the girls.

The girls from their own organizations and adopted the Girls Guide. The Troop 8 ac-

cordingly was sponsored by Silliman Church and that sometime in the 1930s, those

taking theology were taught how to become Scoutmasters.

The first boy to earn his Eagle Rank was Carlos L. Madrazo Jr. who completed the

requirements for this rank at age 14 1/2. In the 1950s to the 1960s, there were several

American missionaries who earned their Eagle Scout ranks during the teens. These

included, Henry Mack and Gordon May who were active with Silliman’s Sea Scout-

ing; Ted Haney who was active in Rover Scouting; Alexander Grant who encouraged

and helped scouts complete their Eagle Scout requirements.

In, 1963, one of the beloved members of the Scouting program was Jojo Magbanua.

He was a member of the Philippine delegation to the World Jamboree in Greece that

met a fatal plane accident. His status together with other Scouts to the event was ele-

vated to a Scouting hero, as streets in select cities in the Philippine were named after

them.

Our current Boy Scout movement at Silliman University is being led by Scout Master

McDiery Concepcion. We would like to thank them for being the colors for today.
