Longmont is home to the Boulder County Fair; at 147 years, it’s the longest-running county fair in the state, drawing participants and visitors from all over the state and the region. But some of the other events and festivals held in Longmont have become cherished, long-running traditions over the years, and they’re not to be missed! Here are a few of our favorites;

This year’s two-night extravaganza features live music, the Greenway Glow 5K, slackline competitions, and so much more. October–November • Day of the Dead CelebrationsLongmont’s popular Day of the Dead celebrations bring in visitors from all over Colorado and beyond! The Longmont Museum’s events, spanning more than a month each year, include an art exhibition, altar-making workshops, sugar-skull decorating, and a huge (free!) family celebration with music, food, dancing, and more. The Firehouse Art Center and the Arts Longmont Gallery also host themed events like art openings, receptions, and gallery talks; the Firehouse’s Catrina Ball in mid-October is a popular, family-friendly event. Left Hand Brewing Annual EventsLeft Hand Brewing Co. sponsors a number of annual events that help raise money for local nonprofits and the Left Hand Brewing Foundation. St. Vrain Historical Society Antique ShowsThe St. Vrain Historical Society hosts two shows each year that help raise funds for the society’s many preservation projects. Both shows are held at the Boulder County Fairgrounds, 9595 Nelson Road.• May 21-22: The Strawberry Festival Antiques Show, held the third weekend of every May since 1970, features antiques vendors from around the region, plus fresh strawberry shortcake.• October 8-9: The Pumpkin Pie Days Antiques Show was held in Longmont each year from 1899-1914, then revived again in 1969. It features antiques vendors from around the region, plus fresh pumpkin pie. ✶

August 28Festival on Main longmont closes a portion of Main street for this all-encom-passing annual festival that signals the end of summer. stroll several blocks of live music, arts performances, food booths, vendor booths, kids’ activities like bouncy castles and a giant bubble-making machine, crafts projects, and much more. to cel-ebrate the event’s big 15th anniversary, this year’s festival has a “quinceañera” theme with cultural music, foods, and demonstra-tions. 6-10pm. www.festivalonmain.com.

LONGMONT’S CELEBRATED PARK SYSTEMMore than 2,000 acres of the city are dedicated to neighborhood, community, and district parks of all sizes, for relaxing, picnicking, strolling, throwing the football, playing on the swings, and much more. Check out the full park list and interactive map at www.longmontcolorado.gov/parks; there’s also a handy “park finder” search tool that lets you find a park based on the amenities of your choice, from batting cages, BMX hills, and tennis courts to disc golf courses, horseshoe pits, water play features, and picnic pavilions. DON’T MISS: The rose garden and wading pool at Roosevelt Park; the bird sanctuary at Jim Hamm Nature Area; the Tower of Compassion at Kanemoto Park; and the themed images throughout Blue Skies Park that detail the history of flight.
DOG PARKSDogs love to play at the park, too! Longmont boasts two dedicated dog parks where you can take your pooch for a workout, plus four other parks with roomy off-leash areas, including Union Reservoir’s popular Dog Beach. www.longmontcolorado.gov/parks
FISHING & WATERSPORTS• McIntosh Lake, on the northwest side of town, allows fishing from the shoreline and from non-motorized boats. You can also explore Dawson Park or Flanders Park, or walk the 3.6-mile trail that circles the lake.• Union Reservoir, on the eastern edge of the city, offers 736 acres of water for fishing, swimming, wakeless boating, camping, windsurfing, picnicking, and much more. It’s a popular place for weekend getaways and family reunions. Rent a paddleboard at www.rockymtnpaddleboard.com. For more information, call the reservoir office at 303-772-1265.• Golden Ponds has 56 acres of water surface on its total 94 acres, plus 2.6 miles of trails, a handicap-accessible fishing pier, and nine picnic shelters.• Up at Button Rock Preserve, Ralph Price Reservoir allows you to fish while enjoying a wildlife-preserve atmosphere. Besides the required state of Colorado fishing license, fishing at Ralph Price also requires an additional special permit that can be obtained at the City Clerk’s office.• At McCall Lake, you can fish for bass, catfish, and more from the scenic shoreline. Located on Highway 66; parking is available on the north and west sides of the lake.• St. Vrain State Park, located at I-25 and Highway 119, spans 604 acres of land with 152 acres of water split among several ponds. It’s a popular place for camping, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Don’t let the proximity to the interstate fool you; it’s very peaceful!
