Stewardship

A Way of Life

Stewardship Reflection

In today’s readings, we hear a lot about giving thanks to God. In the first reading, Naaman believes in God, after a miraculous healing. In the Gospel reading, the Samaritan leper returns to thank Jesus after a miraculous healing.

Living Stewardship . . . Pillar of Hospitality

Take time this week to thank God for all He has done for you. Let us not become like the nine lepers who did not return to thank Jesus after He healed them but be like the Samaritan leper who did not forget what the Lord has done. One way we can thank God is by doing good for others.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

in the Holy Cross Chapel on the 1st floor of the Ministry Building and concludes with

Benediction at 3:00 p.m.

On the first Friday night of each month we also invite you for Nocturnal Adoration.

World

Mission

Sunday

World Mission Sunday, our annual worldwide Eucharistic celebration for the Missions and missionaries of the world, will be on October 20th. The collection taken next weekend is a unique, global effort for the entire Church to provide for the building up of over one thousand local churches in Asia and Africa, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe. Through the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace. Please be as generous as your means allow.

From the Rector —

Dear Parishioners: I write to offer my congratulations to the 291 young people who were confirmed this past Sunday at St. Agnes Cathedral. Our young people’s preparation for this Sacrament was evident. As seventh and eighth graders they grew in their understanding of our faith by going to class, engaging in works of service, going on retreat and participating in special Masses and other spiritual exercises. May God’s Holy Spirit guide them and help them as they follow Christ’s call to come and follow Him. I especially thank those who did so much in preparing our young people for the Sacrament. I am grateful for the leadership of Mr. Joseph Long, the Director of Faith Formation and Evangelization, Deacon Andy Ciccaroni, the Coordinator of the Confirmation Program, our Principal, Mrs. Cecilia St. John, and Mr. Justin Grover, our Assistant Principal. I thank those who served as the catechists and teachers of our young people not only these past years but for all those years since their First Communion. I thank the staff of the Religious Education office—Mary Scaturro and Joanne Riddle—for looking after all the many details that went into this day. To the musicians and wonderful choirs who lifted our hearts with the beauty of music, I offer thanks. And to Bishop Barres and Bishop Murphy, our Assistant Bishop, Bishop Zglejszewski, and Fr. Eric Fasano, who assisted Bishop Barres in confirming some of our candidates—thank you. Finally, but most importantly, I thank the parents and sponsors of our Confirmation class for their support, guidance, example and encouragement of our young people. To those young people who were confirmed in the Holy Spirit last Sunday— May the outpouring of the Spirit, gladden your hearts and strengthen you in living the gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude, piety and wonder and awe. God Bless all of you.

In the Peace and Love of Christ,

Father Bill

Principal’s

Announcements

“Have an attitude of gratitude” is one of those catchphrases fit for bumper stickers and children's books. Yet, for Christians, this is more than a catchphrase. It is a basic command of Christian life. In today's Gospel reading ten lepers were healed by Jesus. All ten turned to Jesus in faith with their request. However, after they were healed, only one of the ten returns to thank him for answering his prayer. What lesson should we take from the story? School is closed on Monday, October 14th, in observance of Columbus Day. Iowa testing begins this week for grades 2-8. Students in those grades should come to school well-rested, eat a nutritious breakfast, be on time for school and have a supply of number 2 pencils with good erasers. Kindergarten children will participate in a trip to White Post Farms this week to enjoy all the beautiful sights and sounds of the fall season. Peace and Blessings,

Cecilia St. John Principal
