God expresses His love for his Son, Jesus, when He emerges from the bottom of the Jordan river; analogously, He reminds us about His love for us, when we emerge from the bottom of our lives, when we cannot rely on our merits and have to be fully reliant on Him.

When Jesus comes out of the water, heaven is opened and the voice of God is heard, confessing His fatherhood and the love for His Son. This love overflows, as the Father is well pleased. Every one of us who is baptized have made God pleased, even before we were able to realize its importance or began consciously seeking His will in our lives. In the moment of our Baptism God offered us His love, He touched us, extended His care over us. Unloved children struggle their entire lives; neglected children struggle for years to be noticed; rejected torment themselves with self-hatred; and those in whom the parent is displeased suffer inexpressibly, doubting their own worth. On the other hand, children grow healthily when they receive approval and favor from their parents. Without love, without expressions of affection, without literal touching, caresses, words of praise, notice, support, attention and closeness, children wither like flowers without water.

God uses the image of water as an elementary expression of concern, which even for the most primitive form of existence here on earth is necessary. I am reminded about it every time when I celebrate Baptism, when I look at the child whom parents hold in their arms with concern, asking for the Sacrament. And I, a priest, with water in my hands, like someone who waters flowers, pour out grace over the head of the child, and I see their parents’ faces shining, being pleased with their children, children who cannot rely on themselves, but are fully dependent on their parents. Through the Sacrament of Baptism God bestows His love by an outpouring of His graces, visibly represented by the element of water. Just as when His Son came out of the water, the heaven revealed the Father's favor. Everyone who is baptized is introduced into this flow of the favor of God the Father.

We, who are created in the image and likeness of God, who are made for the very purpose of love, need to know that someone is pleased in us, but above all, need to be constantly reminded of God’s unconditional love for us. We do not always realize that we ourselves are children, sons and daughters beloved by our Father.

Celebrating the Baptism of the Lord, we are made aware that God leaves His favor with us in His Sacraments, which are the foundation of the eternal life and the gateway to the glory to our communion with our Father in Heaven.
