It is now the time of the year for the adrenaline-rushing SCC Night Race, in conjunction with the Singapore Grand Prix from 14 – 16 September. Thank you for your enthusiastic participation! Tickets are almost sold out and the SCC team is now completing final preparations for you to enjoy a glitzy weekend of entertainment at the Clubhouse right smack in the centre of the F1 circuit.

The Soccer7’s tournament held on 28 – 29 July was a resounding success with the participation of 54 teams from around the region, a festive Carnival Zone to entertain spectators, and strong sponsorship support from our partners. Congratulations to the SCC Firsts for defending its Open Cup title! One of the highlights was that of ex-Liverpool, Spurs and English International midfielder Danny Murphy who not only graced the 27 July Gala Dinner and had a 45-minute Q&A session with guests, but also led a soccer clinic organised by the Soccer7’s for more than 30 youths – the majority of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Initiatives such as these echo the Singapore Cricket Club’s ethos of sportsmanship and community.

As part of our aim to encourage the building of stronger friendships between Members, two Intersection events were recently held. The Cricket Section won the Cup Winner for the Mini Soccer Mixed Tournament held on 29 July in conjunction with the Soccer7’s, while the Plate Winner was awarded to the Squash Section. Meanwhile, at the 1st Intersection Cuesports Tournament on 21 July, the Golf Section emerged champions. More Intersection events are lined up for the rest of the year, including tournaments organised by Darts, Netball and Lawn Bowls. We invite you to join us and mingle with other Members during these activities. Look out for more information via our eBlasts, SCC Facebook Page, TV screen, etc.

The next major tournament coming up is the 71st edition of the SCC International Rugby7s to be held on 2 – 4 November. We are welcoming a stellar line-up of teams including one of New Zealand’s best, the Ponsonby Rugby Club, as well as

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

others from Australia, France, Hong Kong, Japan, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and the USA. Tickets are already available for sale and you can refer to the back cover of the Padang magazine for more details.

We are continuing to make improvements to our facilities and services so Members can benefit from enhanced experiences at the Clubhouse. On the F&B front, we have expanded our menu offerings at The Oval & Verandah. Our signature restaurant, The Padang Restaurant, has been enhanced with new decorations, table settings and tableware, and additional touches such as fresh bread baskets and petit fours to elevate your dining experience. The Padang’s à la carte menu has been revised, and Members and their guests can enjoy Executive Set Lunches that are updated every two weeks. On a weekly basis, Members can also enjoy appetising Sunday Brunch Buffets with their families and let us entertain your children at our Kids Corner.

Our Members are important to the longevity of the Club, and we encourage you to spend more time with us, enjoy our facilities and dining experiences, make friends through our social events and sporting activities, and be an active participant. When you have a moment, take a look at our Facebook page to see what fellow Members are up to and to be in the know about upcoming events at the Club. I am pleased to note the great number of responses that came in when we asked for your contribution in creating a new SCC tagline that speaks of what the Singapore Cricket Club is, and the direction we want to move towards together. At the time of my writing, Members are submitting their votes on their favourite shortlisted tagline. We look forward to announcing the winner soon and embracing our new vision of the Club together.

Thank you for being the Club’s advocates – see you at the SCC!

12 THE PADANG SEP / OCT 2018

Recently promoted to Chef de Cuisine for The Padang, SCC’s signature restaurant, we spoke to Chef Vik about his journey as a culinary master.

IN CONVERSATION WITH CHEF VIK

Why did you decide to become a Chef?

I started off stewarding and working as a kitchen helper in the hotel industry at a young age of 16 years. Over time, I realized that my fascination for cooking grew stronger and I enjoyed watching cooking shows and learning new cooking techniques.

I was mentored by celebrity chef, Emmanuel Stroobant, and landed my first job in 2009 as Chef de Partie under his mentorship. Since then, I have been on a continuous quest to improve upon my recipes and learn as much as I can.

Tell us about your journey as a Chef with SCC.

It was a different environment for me when I first started off in SCC. For me, having a good team and establishing a standard way of preparing menu items are essential in this industry. I prefer to lead a team by being on the ground with them and I guide them to ensure that the proper cooking techniques and plating process is followed through.

This is important to ensure that Members receive the same or even, better dining experience with The Padang Restaurant. I am thankful to the management for their strong support and for trusting the vision I have for the restaurant.

What is your favorite cuisine to cook?

I enjoy cooking French and modern European cuisines, mainly because of my past experience dealing with more intricate recipes.

How do you get your inspiration?

I think that the people we work closely with play a huge role in motivating us. This is something I picked up from my mentor. Leadership is an important factor in inspiration.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu and why?

The Scallops!

To be honest, when I first started as a Chef with SCC, scallops had been a constant dish on the menu, but the dish lacked substantial ingredients. So I decided to enhance the serving of scallops by introducing additional ingredients such as ‘Onion Broth’ and ‘Smoked Ham’ so that the dish achieves a total fruition to its taste. The scallops are a favourite for me because it allows me to experiment with more variations and ingredients.

Do you think you can further innovate the menu?

Definitely but I would like to focus on the modern European cuisine instead of the Asian varieties because we already have a very good Asian menu at The Oval and Verandah. I would like to see how we can incorporate gluten-free options without compromising the taste of our dishes. My vision is for The Padang Restaurant to be known for its Western cuisine, and I look forward to welcoming you to the restaurant.

SCC Soccer7’s28 - 29 July 2018

The annual Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) Soccer 7’s returned to Singapore with a record number of 54 teams from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand in contention for honours alongside top Singapore and Affiliate Clubs on the iconic Padang field from 28–29 July 2018.

The 2018 edition, which ran in conjunction with the Singapore Football Week organised by ActiveSG and Car-Free Sunday, welcomed a Women’s tournament for the first time, featuring eight top local women’s teams. The Women’s tournament was one of five different 7-a-side categories which included the Open, Masters, Legends and Youth.

Jonathan Knapp, the SCC Football Section Convenor said, “We were thrilled to be hosting a Women’s event this year, with top local teams such as Simei United FC and Tampines Changkat CSC FC competing. Globally, Women’s football is a massively popular sport which continues to attract both players and supporters alike. We’re proud to support its rise and hope that more female players will be inspired to join the sport.”

Danny Murphy, former Liverpool and Spurs star and England international, graced the event as its guest-of-honour at the pre-tournament Gala Dinner held on 27 July and was also on hand during the competition to cheer the players on.

During the afternoon of 27 July, Murphy also helped our Coaching Clinic, led by renowned international coach, Ndem a Kiyeck Guy Herve, which was held for 34 youths at the Padang, putting them through their football paces in a knowledge-transfer session exclusive to the SCC Soccer 7’s. Most of the participants were from Youth Football Home (Phuket, Thailand), a home for orphaned and destitute children; Bali Sports Foundation (Bali, Indonesia), a foundation that works on improving the lives of people with disabilities through sports and

play; and Care Corner (Singapore), which provides a wide range of children, youth, special needs, adult, couple and senior community services – all three also fielded teams in the Youth tournament.

With the aim of creating a more engaging and high- quality event on and off the field, the organising committee also lined up a plethora of entertainment and lifestyle-related activities which offered something for everyone!

The Carnival Zone, for example, featured fun-filled game booths where children and families could get in on the action. Yoga enthusiasts could also sign up for a special free Sunday Sunrise Yoga session led by event partner Om & Away on the Padang Field at dawn on Sunday, 29 July 2018.

Amos Boon, co-Chairman of the tournament’s organising committee, said, “Thanks to our partners and sponsors, we have been able to create a great atmosphere for both football fans and families alike and are glad to be able to grow the annual tournament to where it is today. Our goal is not only to ensure every player and spectator enjoys a unique and memorable experience, but to also curate an event which adds value to sponsors’ and partners’ corporate objectives.”

He continued, “We’ve always aimed to push the envelope and bring the SCC Soccer7’s tournament to greater heights. The new Women’s tournament as well as the addition of lifestyle and entertainment activities definitely helped add to the festivities, ensuring an even more spectacular event!”

The SCC Soccer 7’s was sanctioned by the Football Association of Singapore (FAS), and proudly supported by Macoocoo, Jiojiome, Raymond Weil, Hyundai, Tiger Beer, and other official partners.

SCC RECIPROCAL CLUBS:

Building Friendships Through SportsSports has a most wonderful way of bringing people together. The SCC helps make it easier for its Members to establish contact and facilitate the building of relationships through visits, tours and sports tournaments with its reciprocal clubs around the world.

At the recent Soccer7’s, we caught up with Members from two of SCC’s reciprocal clubs where football teams have been participating in the tournament for many years now - the Royal Bangkok Sports Club (RBSC) from Thailand and the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club (YCAC) from Japan – and asked what has motivated them to return to the SCC each year.

Ever since we participated back in 2009, the SCC Soccer Tournament itself has improved a lot in terms of the quality of the teams that participate, the hospitality and management, and the people working behind the curtains.

It has really offered us a lot of pleasure and joy for the game we love; it is fantastic to be able to play right in the centre of the Padang, the heart of the beautiful city of Singapore.

We would like to be invited once again, we really appreciate the warm hospitality we get to enjoy from the Club and the Members and staff; we appreciate every single minute of it.

Joe Takeda - Yokohama Country and Athletic Club (YCAC)YCAC was honoured at the Soccer7’s Gala Dinner for 10 straight

years of participation in the SCC Soccer Tournaments since 2009.

The first time I came to Singapore to represent RBSC at the SCC Soccer Tournament was in 1998. Since then, I’ve returned 10 times, and I see myself continuing to visit SCC to play, upgrading from the Open category to the Legends category.

Singapore is a nice place to visit, and it is a great feeling to be able to play on the pitch in the middle of the city. Whenever we come, we enjoy ourselves as a team, and it is also a chance for us to meet old friends. We’ve made many friends with other teams who participate regularly in the Tournament over the years - YCAC is a good friends of ours, and of course SCC is always good to us.

After a month of planning, we were finally ready for the Intersection Cuesports Tournament! By the closing registration date, we had received entries from Golf, Bridge, Squash, Dart/Balut, Cricket, Lawn Bowl, General Committee and Billiards and Snooker Sections.

Our objectives:• An introduction of Snooker and Pool to Club mem-

bers.• Raise awareness of the facilities available, especially

the Pool Table which was recently installed and offered free of charge for members’ play.

• Create an opportunity for SCC Members to socialize and bonding.

At 11am, we started our first game between the Squash and the Billiards and Snooker Sections and hopefully the beginning of a new tradition in SCC. While the friendly tournament progressed, free flow of beers and light snack were served.

During the first round of the Knock Out format, players were to play to the end of the frame as for some, this was their first experience in Snookers and Pool. After the first round, a time limit of 20 minutes was imposed and there was some fierce competitiveness especially from the Golf, Cricket, Lawn Bowl and Squash Sections.

By 5pm, our finalist emerged: Golf Section who qualified from the winner pool and Cricket Section qualified from the loser pool. Golf Section emerged Winner with a 3-0 victory in the final and became the first winner of the inaugural SCC Intersection Cuesports tournament 2018. Golf Section won the Challenge Trophy and $300 F&B Voucher, while the Cricket Section won a $150 F&B Voucher. There was a good spread of buffet dinner for all participants after the event which ran into the late evening together with the free flow of beers.

I hope all participants enjoyed the one-day event; we certainly achieved our objectives. Our next event will be the Coaching Clinic in September, and we invite you to register your interest with the Marker.

SINGAPORE INTER-CLUB LEAGUEThe League season runs from May for six months, culminating in the final game which will be hosted by SCC in October. The most recent league match was hosted at NUSS’s Suntec City facility on July 18. As usual there was great hospitality, and excellent makan – possibly a reason why some of our players were not as “sharp” as usual!

Looking on the brighter side, there are still 4 games to go and plenty of opportunity to retain the League Trophy.

THE TRIANGULAR TOURNAMENTThis is an annual event played between the SCC, Indian Association, and the NUSS. As the Tournament winners last year, NUSS hosted this year’s match at their Kent Ridge facility. IA were the winners with a score of 2,522 points, and SCC 2 achieved second placing with 2,357 points.

UPCOMING EVENTS• The Pot Games: To be hosted by the Tanglin Club on October 6• The Padang Shield: To be hosted by Singapore Recreation Club on Saturday November 17th• 38th Chivas Regal Interport Challenge Trophy: To be hosted by Singapore Recreation Club on 23/24 NovemberNote: with heavy event activity taking place through to the end of the year, all Balut Section Members will receive confirmation on In-house events via WhatsApp.

IN-HOUSE BALUT POINTS TABLEThe Balut section had another very successful In-house Balut event on July 24th with 33 participants, great makan – especially the lamb stew, and the usual wonderfully convivial crowd. At what is approximately the half-way mark, we can see the “race” for “Baluteer of the Year” is hotly contested. While a mere 230 points or so separates the current ‘top three’, the situation can dramatically alter as we move towards December.

So far this year we have had a total of 8 in-house events, mainly on Tuesday evenings, but occasionally on Saturday afternoons. These events continue to be extremely popular. If any Club members are considering to join, but want to sample an In-house event first, you may come along as our guest and enjoy the fun with us. Please remember that experience is not necessary as we will be very happy to teach you!

34 THE PADANG SEP / OCT 2018

VISIT FROM ROYAL SELANGOR CLUBThe visit of our old friends from the Royal Selangor Club for this Interport fixture is always highly anticipated giv-en the rich history both on and off the field shared by our two great Clubs, with added colour and sentiment provided by virtue of the fact that many have been members of both Clubs and have participated in this fix-ture of the years (and in some cases, decades!) on both sides of the equation.

RSC this visit, was packed with a veritable “Who’s Who” of Malaysian National and State Players/Captains from years gone by, and it promised to be a highly entertaining weekend for all. Our visitors also truly embraced touring “best* practices*” spurred on by the renowned SCC hos-pitality, which surely resulted in many a late night and many a bleary eye.

However, being the consummate enthusiasts we all are, 22 were present and correct for the Interport Match on Sunday and SCC cunningly chose to invite our guests to have first use of what looked a very good Padang strip. RSC lost their opening bat on the 2nd ball of the innings, but powered by former Malaysian Capt Rohan Selva-ratnam 35* (38) and Navin Durairatnam (35* (34) they recovered with a 75 run 2nd wicket stand. From there our bowlers managed to pull things back to restrict RSC to a mere 160 from their 30 overs - when at one stage 220+ looked likely.

Chasing a small target had banana peel written all over it, but the SCC top 4 got the job done. A rollicking start saw SCC pile on 84 - 1 in the first 10 overs - Pankaj Kapoor 35* (26) and Syed Ali 37* (16!) and from there the Interport Honours were sewn up in 24.3 overs for the loss of 2. We look forward to the return fixture in KL next year.

At the time of writing this, our league performance has been pretty good with our top two teams leading the charge. While Lions, stepping into the T20 mode, has been undefeated so far; Tigers & Jaguars almost have one hand on the Div 1 and Div 4 silverware with some very consistent performances.

CRICKET SECTION IN INTERSECTION EVENTSA lot more to report with the Section putting in laudable performances in the Intersection events, winning both the Intersection pool competition and the mixed Soccer7’s. A special mention for the Section wags Becky, Mikhayla and Shruti who stepped up to the mark in the Soccer7’s that also saw a scintilaltingly special goal scoring spree by our very own version of Harry Kane, James Kilbee.

The Section continues to be fully committed to Intersection and Intrasection events. The Cricket Section golf event held this quarter at Warren GCC also saw some active participation and quite a few lost golf balls. It was Sat XI’s right arm quick, Simon Bird who put in a solid round to win the competition. A great day out for the section members indeed.

1ST SCC INTERSECTION CUESPORT TOURNAMENT: 21ST JULY 2018WINNERS: SCC GOLF SECTION

The Golf Section “cueball” team strolled into the Men’s Bar for the inaugural Intersection Cuesport Competition sharply attired at 11am. The team comprised of Captain Timothy Ong, Richard Loo, Ong Chin Leong, David Yeo, Chionh Chye Hion, Alvin Khoo and Colin Khong. We were all ready and raring to go. Enroute to the finals, we battled and beat strong teams from the Cricket and Billiards & Snooker Sections with a strong headed fighting spirit and absorbed all that the others could throw at us. We made it to the final without dropping a single match and played against the Cricket Section for the Cup. It was a thrilling re-match; exciting

and close. Thankfully, we put on our best face and won all three games. In congratulating the team on their success, it must also be mentioned that team did very well and did the Golf Section proud.

WINE & OYSTERS SOCIAL NIGHT: 27TH JULY 2018Wine & Oysters Night was the brainchild of Convener Chionh which attracted perhaps the largest attendance ever in a Golf Section Social evening party. The evening was filled with surprises galore and the highlight was the hidden talent of our dear pal P.T. Mini crisis when we ran out of oysters. Luckily it was towards the end and we tried to replenish stock by hijacking more oysters from the Oyster Bar at the Main Lounge. A few younger jokers forgot that oysters were starters/appetizers to be paired with fine wine and whiskey and oysters were not the Main Course! Alas, Buffet Syndrome.

As is standard at any Golf Section party, our very dear buddies Al and Ko-Hol were copiously busy lifting the spirits and vocals of their mates with help from Krish, Colin and some beautiful ladies who sashayed into an impromptu Dangdut jig and Cha Cha. It was a great night of good food, great music from Heart & Soul and glorious fun.

GOLF TRIP TO ANTALYA RESORT TURKEY: 7 TO 15 OCTOBER 2018As many as 20 SCC golfers and wives will depart Singapore for the beautiful resort of Antalya, Turkey

to play four rounds of golf at top Turkish golf courses. Antalya is an international jet set seaside playground on the Eastern Mediterranean with fantastic beaches and clean crystal clear water. The seafood and local Turkish cuisine is top draw quality at value for money prices.

Section Treasurer Krishna is the tour manager and he has worked out details to the “T”. Golf will be played at Championship courses and we shall stay at the 5 star Titanic Resort.

There will be a full day tour to various places of interest in Antalya after the first two days of golf and a full day tour of Istanbul, including a day cruise on the Bosphorus Straits on 14 October, the day before we board the flight home to Singapore.

Some members will stay on for a few more days to tour and enjoy the magic of Turkish delights.

This tour is organized by the Golf Section for our Members and it is completely self-funded by individual Members.

GOLFERS CORNER @ MEN’S BARThanks to SCC President Sher Baljit Singh, Deputy President Zoher Motiwalla, Chairman GCB Matthew Streeton, and members of the General Committee, the Golf Section now has a “Golfers Corner” and a wall of fame at the Men’s Bar. This is the epitome of our treasured SCC Sports culture where every Sports Section is equally honored and supported.

The Golfers Corner captures our remarkable past glory, honors our Golf Champions and keeps alive the Golf Section’s never-say-die spirit while setting a dynamic mission standard for the future.

The Golf Section was established in 1984 and is arguably the largest sports section in the Club which offers Members a full year calendar of competitive and social golf games at both local and overseas golf courses. In addition we host a quarterly social night with excellent F&B and a live band, a shotgun start Annual Golf Championship and a sell-out Christmas Social Golf game with a smashing after-game Christmas Party Bash at the Padang Restaurant.

38 THE PADANG SEP / OCT 2018

BRAVE NEW WORLD OF SCC HOCKEYThe uncanny thing about sports is that, considering how everyone is trying to win, more losers than winners are produced. For example, hundreds of players enter the Wimbledon’s Men’s Single Open annually but there is only one winner and hundreds of losers. At the FIFA World Cup, 32 teams competed and 31 teams lost! That is the most special part about sports: when you win, it’s a feeling that not many would have experienced even if they played sports for yonks. Winning is an elusive facet of sports. Dare I say, it’s something not everyone can embrace and certainly not for the faint-hearted. When you win, you reach a point where things become more beautiful, your days are sunnier, your smiles bigger and the colours of the world brighter. Winning is a feeling many yearn for but only a few grasp.

We at SCC Hockey are so fortunate to be blessed with major honours over the last few years. The tennis great Billie Jean King once said, “Champions are afraid of losing, everyone else are afraid of winning”. Not too long ago we were the “everyone else”. Now we are becoming accustomed to being “afraid of losing”.

SCC HOCKEY HUMBLED BY MAJOR HONOURS AT THE SCC SPORTS AWARDSOur thriving sports scene at SCC bravely celebrated the successes of the Club’s sporting prowess through our various Sections at the 11th SCC Sports Award on 24 March 2018. The Hockey Section, which has had an extremely successful year on the pitch in 2017, was looking forward to being amongst the major awardees.

Hockey had swept both the Men’s and Ladies’ National League titles along with SCC Sixes Men’s and Ladies’ Cup competition. This novel occurrence led for the slogan “Double-Double” to be coined and used freely in a campaign that also saw our Junior Boys winning the Youth Liga and our Ladies bagging the Indoor National championships, the Wooden Shoe title and the Women’s Liga with a 100% record to cap the year on 9 titles.

At the awards ceremony the Hockey Section did not feature in the many worthy awards until the final few awards, or as some might say, the business end of the evening. The first major accolade, the “Team of the Year”, was bestowed on our unstoppable Ladies 1st XI who won all the tournaments they entered in 2017. Janice Tan was present to collect the elegant challenge trophy.

We missed out on the individual awards for Sports Man and Woman of the Year, but our pint-sized hero Fariz Mohd Bashir picked up the Junior Boy of the Year award. Fariz has seen his life change from playing hockey in the voids decks of East Coast to winning a SEA Games Bronze medal in Indoor Hockey and

lifting the National League title with his SCC Men’s 1st XI Men. On a high, the Hockey Section were to be humbled further when they picked up a second “Section of the Year” award in three years. It was a wonderful reward for a year of dedicated hard work by the entire Section.

The night did not come to an end without our Section’s very own Mathavan Devadas being awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for his massive contribu-tion to the club on the sporting front. Mat, as he is known, has been to four consecutive Olympics as a technical delegate for hockey. He is also the President of the Singapore Hockey Federation and somehow finds the time to be the Treasurer for the Hockey Section. A member of other Sections too, Mat breathes SCC and has made us all very proud of him for being honoured with this award.

earnest action from the last week of February. All the teams were decked out in brand new kit from Australi-an National Team’s sponsor On The Go (OTG). The Australian brand had our superstars in state-of-the-art material with sublimated designs and printing. The teams have never looked better in their new kit proudly displaying BlackGold Natural Resources printed across their chest. BlackGold Natural Resources Limited are our latest sponsor who generously supported our cause this year. The Section used this sponsorship towards getting the new kit as we are hopeful that there will be more successes coming our way in the year ahead.

MEN GET THE JOB DONE, AGAIN!Our Ladies 1st XI could not repeat their performance the year before and finished with a Bronze medal in the National Women’s League 1 but our Men did not disappoint and claimed our first ever back to back National Hockey League title with a game to spare.

The men started the season with one game against last season’s 2nd and two against 1st runners up ORA and Jansenites respectively. They did really well to pick up 2 wins and a draw giving them a huge lift as their main title rivals were drawing games between themselves.

When newly promoted old foe Eagles PV came to lock horns, our men were ready and won a thrilling match 4-3. Trailing 3-1 with a quarter to go, the Men’s 1s did an amazing turnaround of the match and gave themselves a fantastic chance to defend their title. It was a chance they never let go, bagging a 3-1 win over ORA and despite some nervy moments against Khalsa, trailing 0-2, they drew 2-2. They had 2 games left and just had to avoid defeat against Eagles in their penultimate match after beating Khalsa 3-1 in the return leg.

Once again they were trailing 0-2 and Eagles looked good in the match which was live streamed as part of a partnership between SHF and Eleven Sport. But then in a crazy 3-minutes at Sengkang stadium, SCC were awarded 2 penalty strokes and up stepped Ken Forbes with nerves of steel to put both the stroke away to draw level. The boys dug deep and saw out the result to deliver a first ever back to back title for SCC hockey. This now cements SCC’s place amongst the top hockey clubs in Singapore.

The Section would like to take this opportunity to thank the General Committee and Staff of SCC that has made all their successes possible with their continuous support. Our convenor Intekhab Khan was delighted with our Men’s success and said, “What truly has been the difference over the last few years is that the Members of the Section bond better these days and we are moving together to bigger and brighter things.”

SCC AT THE NATIONAL GAMESIn conjunction with Singapore’s National Day, ActiveSG organised the Singapore National Games. SCC entered 5 teams into 5 categories and returned with one bronze and one silver medal. Although they came close to a Bronze in the Women’s Premier category, all the SCC teams held their own in this very exciting Hockey 5s competition held at Sengkang Stadium.

SCC will aim to bring home gold medals from future National games.

40 THE PADANG SEP / OCT 2018

This quarter has been one of growth, excitement and achievement for the Netball Section!

ANBROS NATIONAL LEAGUE 2018Three teams were entered into the Anbros National League due to an influx of exciting new play-ers. In what has been the most competitive season yet, the ladies showed a strong commitment to continuous improvement and brought the fighting spirit that SCC Netball has become synonymous with to each game. We congratulate the Eagles (seconds) and Ospreys (thirds) for achieving podium finishes and taking 3rd place in divisions 5 and 7 respectively. The Hawks (firsts) just missed out on a podium finish after drawing on points for 3rd places and narrowly coming in 4th based on goal average. We also congratulate the Falcons (mixed) for another strong showing this season. The conclusion of the season was celebrated with a fun-filled BBQ hosted by the Section’s captain, Carol Hartopp Hall.

BANGKOK TOURIn early June, the Section sent a representative team to participate in an international invitational tournament in Bangkok. Despite extremely strong competition, the la-dies showed tremendous skill, team work and determina-tion and finished second in the division two final.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIESA highlight of the social calendar was the Tennis vs Net-ball dress-up Netball social match. Alas, the Tennis Sec-tion seemed to have misplaced their memo and forgot their dressups! The Tennis Section displayed great skill and only narrowly lost to the Netball Section proving that they will be the team to beat in the upcoming Netball In-tersection Tournament. Another highlight was the Soc-cer7’s, where the Netball Section made it to the semi-fi-nals, only to be piped at the post by the Cricket Section.

EXCITING THINGS TO COME! As part of the Committee’s efforts to ramp up the Sec-tions’ social activities, a monthly book club (aptly named “books and bevvies”), gym and gin Fridays and various other activities will be launched in August. The Section will also hold the annual Netball Intersection Tournament, JSM carnival and a quiz night in November. Please look out for emails from the Section for more details.

FAREWELLS The Section sadly bids farewell to our former convener Penny Hands and Ospreys captain Emma Holmes to-gether with our two signature “tall-ies” in the mixed team, Nick Power and Guillermo Medina Moralejo. We thank each of them for their contribution to the Section and wish them the very best in the next chapters of their lives!

SEP / OCT 2018 THE PADANG 41

On a sweltering day in Singapore, the Rugby Section turned out two phenomenal squads for the Soccer7’s Mixed Intersection Tournament. Inspired by the recent World Cup, the SCC Rugby Section, having achieved all they can in rugby-football in a non-World Cup year, decided to take on association-football.

“Benteke-Fried-Chicken” was headed up by esteemed clubman Jack Whiskin (SCC-Spirit-of-Sport-Award-2018) in fuchsia pink, while “Kick-it-or-dive-trying” was headed by Matthew ‘Heady’ Head in SCC Gold. All players sported the cleverly original kit number of 69, guarantee-ing the best position on the pitch.

The opposition was rife with sporting talent and ques-tions were raised over the identity of one of the players in the General Committee (GC) team as they closely resem-bled Arsenals Mesut Ozil. However, the Section was fear-less with the knowledge that they had the talent of Bryan Lim (ACS player of the year 2004) and Welsh-wizard Ben Tuner (similar hair to Ryan Giggs) to be unleashed.

Benteke came to the hallowed turf of the Padang first, beating Hockey 1 – 0. This was merely a warm up for the team and allowed the players to get used to the ques-tionable no stud’s environment of the tournament. Kick-it came out of the starting blocks with a fearsome faceoff against the GC drawing 1-1.

A storming second performance left Benteke with a 3-0 win over the SCC Select with a few great goals from Jay-Hykel. Billiards was next for Kick-It with a 1-0 victory to Rugby whilst Benteke saw back-to-back victories against Cricket and Squash.

Kick-it came back out to play the Netball Section who had called in a few favours, resulting in Kick-it losing 4-2.

Kick-It progressed to the Plate Semi. Playing Hockey, it was 1-1 at full time before a moment of controversy as the referee went straight to Penalties. Logic prevailed when the Soccer Section stepped in, giving 5 mins extra time with shouts of ‘let the girls and boys play”. Ending 1-1 after

extra time, the moment came when players needed to step up with Ben Turner, Murray Wyille and Bryan Lim all doing the job. This led to a 3-2 win and progression to the plate final, where the team lost 2-1 in extra time to the well-versed Squash Section.Benteke’s winning streak took them to the Cup Semi Final where they calmly came to a 1-0 victory against the GC, taking them to the Final against their earlier fodder Cricket.

Clearly the time the Cricket Section had to prepare fo-cused their minds allowing a 3-0 victory over Benteke in the cup final, leading to a runner up position for Benteke.

The Section owes a big thanks to talented sportswomen Samantha Tan and Minyee Tan whose participation allowed us to actually enter a team.

Tampines Rovers have already shown interest in sizable front man Harresh Krishnan albeit as a door man rather than a center forward.

Jack Whiskin contemplated on what could have been: "We lost because we didn't win."

THE PERFECT PARTNERS OF PIMM’S AND WIMBLEDONIn the lead up to Wimbledon 2018, the Section organised a Wimbledon Tennis Social on 29 June. It was a return of the successful event organised in 2017, when tennis enthusiasts from across the various Sections were invited to take part in the social action. Being social naturally meant a little inspiration, which came in the form of a Pimms welcome drink to get the action started.

Unlike the British summer this year, Wimbledon at SCC faced rain delays. Despite this, the Social progressed with some excellent pairing combination matching each other off. Although the timed format and points scoring system derived by the tournament director Darren Wilson was washed out, hidden talent at the club was still discovered from the Hockey and Rugby Sections, in addition to Tennis!

Players played in differing doubles pairings throughout the night, which made for an excellent opportunity to meet new players and socialise. For their hard work, players were rewarded with a makan kechil. What a great way to end an evening and to ensure that the socialising continued! Thank you to all those who participated, and cheers to the next all white championship in 2019.

WTA SINGAPORE TEAM AT SCC FUN DAYSCC Members, family and friends were joined by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Singapore Team at the SCC Fun Day held on Saturday, 30 Jun 2018. The team facilitated a free-to-play practice session and gave some invaluable advice and tips for budding tennis enthusiasts from age 5 onwards, with special giveaways from Lagardere Sports. Melissa Pine, Vice President of WTA Asia Pacific and WTA Finals Tournament Director, said, “It’s always so engaging when SCC organises an event for Members and their families to come out, learn some tennis and get exposed to other sports all in one day.
