Imitating ChristThe biblical use of the term saint in the book of Acts … applies to each of us. All who are attempting to imitate the Christ in their lives merit the title of saint. Some do it more fully than others and are willing to let go of more to get the job done.

~ Matthew Fox, Confessions The Prayer Group now meets on Sunday nights at 5:00 pm. Everyone is welcome, anytime. Prayer

requests are also welcome, contact Pastor Dave. God does listen!

As we prepare our hearts and minds this Advent Season, let us remember how blessed we are because of our Lord Jesus Christ. In 1Thessalonians 5:18 Paul tells the church that we should “give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This is a very hard verse for people to grasp going through hard times. Some deal with lifelong struggles, while others deal with shorter term battles and when we are in them it is an impossible thing to say we give thanks for what is going on in our lives. We have witnessed the death of loved ones recently, both very young and very old and some in between and I want to give some encouragement on this month of Thanksgiving.

I want to correct a misunderstanding of what Paul is saying in this verse. Paul is in no way suggesting that we give thanks to God for the terrible things that happen in our life, but rather he is saying that we can give thanks to him “in” those struggles. That is a huge difference in interpretation. I am thankful that while I go through difficulties he is present. I am thankful that he will never leave me or forsake me (Deut. 31:6) even when I yell at him and dislike him because of what I am going through. He is a Heavenly Daddy that won’t abandon his children.

I am thankful that God looks beyond the moment of our circumstances and he has a path to getting us back to a good place in our lives if we will only let him. He can even work in the midst of the ugly, the dirty and the awful things that happen in our lives and bring out of it something good. Remember Romans 8:28 “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” He is saying that something good can eventually come out of something that seems so terribly bad if we will just give it over him.

May I give you a personal example of the above? As many of you know, my mother has Alzheimer’s disease. That stinks! But there are several good things that have happened in that journey that I want to thank God for. I have visited more with my dad then I have ever done in my life because we have always been so busy. I see him usually at least once a week. My faith is strengthened, not weakened in the midst of this. My kids are more inquisitive about the important things in life than they use to be. I am blessed that I serve here in Mackinaw City while my mother takes this journey. I could go on and on, but I am genuinely thankful to God “in all circumstances.”

You have much to be thankful for even if you are going through a rough time. Thank God with me would you!? When you gather around the table this Thanksgiving remember God is there too. I am thankful for all of you and what you mean to me and my family.

I love you,
