Stewardship The Catholic University of America is unique among universities in the United States. Established by Pope Leo XIII and the U.S. bishops in 1887, it is the national university of the Catholic Church. In addition to alumni who hail from this diocese, Catholic University claims one third of the U.S. bishops and 12,000 priests and religious as alumni. In Washington, D.C., the University provides an education based in the Catholic intellectual tradition to almost 7,000 students through its 12 schools. Next weekend, our second collection will benefit CUA. Your support will expand its impact in preparing the next generation of leadership for our Church and nation. We appreciate your generosity. You can learn more at collection.cua.edu.

From Our Pastor “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15)

“What’s your name” is the first thing we ask upon meeting someone new.

In other languages the formal way is literally, “what are you called?” Comment vous appelez-vous? To share our name, how we wish to be known, is to share ourselves. We enter into a relationship when we do so. This relationship can be casual or it can grow into something much deeper.

After witnessing miracles, hearing His teachings, and experiencing the reaction of those who came into contact with Jesus, the disciples are now on the verge of true relationship with Christ. It is Peter who gives voice to this first: “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Yet, we know that this revelation by Peter will eventually turn to repudiation on Good Friday. The first to recognize the enormity of Jesus’ mission on earth will be the first to shy away from all that it would demand.

Though Jesus, as God, would have foreseen this horrible irony, He still chooses this “rock” upon which to “build my church.” It is a clear testament to His great mercy. Jesus’ salvation comes to all, saints and sinners alike. To shepherd his flock, Christ will need a church led by men and women who know of our Father’s great mercy.

We too have built a church here – from stone and wood, mortar and tile. We have constructed the building, but it is those who inhabit it who have given it life and purpose. Parishioners long gone and all of us here today build the community of Christ with every sacrament celebrated, every prayer said in thanksgiving or worry, with every smile and handshake. We re-introduce ourselves with every word or gesture, sharing who we believe Christ is in our daily lives. Our anniversary year is a good time to reflect on the church we have built within our own hearts. If Christ were to question you today, would you answer with the same conviction as Peter?

It’s fitting that today’s Gospel comes just as we begin a new school year. Whether in our classrooms across the street or in classrooms throughout our community, we are building the future with our children. They are watching and learning from us. It is important, now more than ever, that we present the very best example of Christian discipleship so that they will know Christ in their lives by the witness we give them. I wish all our students a successful and happy academic year. We are blessed with an award-winning parochial school and a stellar religious education program. Our IHM Sisters, faculty, staff and dedicated catechists aim to provide the very best academic and formation experience. May God bless our children and their parents with whom we work in partnership. We are grateful to you for entrusting your children to us.

I ask everyone to drive gently around campus now that the school year has begun, especially at drop-off and pick-up times. Remember that our PREP classes begin next month, and so careful attention to our students on Tuesday afternoons and evenings is much appreciated.

~Fr. Posey

1960s - SAINT JAMES SCHOOL

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION -- 1969

For a quarter century, Msgr. Heller advanced the interests of the school. He often visited the classrooms and gave his support to the Sisters in their efforts to achieve and maintain the highest standards during years of educational changes and advancements. In 1960, Msgr. Heller reminded his parishioners: “You are a member of the second oldest parish in Northern Virginia, and now the largest. From a handful of people in 1874 we have grown to over ten thousand souls. The original three-room school house has grown into a modern school of twenty-nine classrooms.”

R.C.I.A. Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Journey of Faith begins with your questions

What is faith? How does faith grow? What do Catholics believe, and why is it

different from other faith traditions?

The R.C.I.A. “Catechumenate” period begins at St. James on

Monday, September 11

The R.C.I.A. is for those who are not yet baptized and seek to become fully initiated Catholic Christians through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist, as well as those who are already baptized in another Christian tradition and wish to enter full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Catholics who have been baptized, but have never received the sacrament of Confirmation or Holy Communion are also encouraged to participate.
