Paris embassy terrorist attack plotFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

This article is about the Al-Qaida plot to destroy the United Statesembassy in Paris, France, as well as a munitions depot in Belgium. TheNATO headquarters in Brussels was also possibly targeted.

The plot

The operation was based out of an apartment in Rotterdam, Netherlands. The

Rotterdam cell probably provided the false passports that were used in theassassination of Ahin .̂.Shah..Massoud.

Tunisian Nizar Trabelsi. an ex-football player for Germany, planned theattack and was the designated suicide bomber. A gifted IT student namedKamel Daoudi led the cell and was the alleged bomb maker.

The plan called for a bomb to be built out of sulphur and acetone. Trabelsiplanned to strap this bomb onto himself, and cover it up with a business suit.He would then detonate himself in the U.S. embassy.

Then, a van packed with explosives would be driven into the U.S. culturalcenter of Paris and the explosives inside would be detonated nearby Place delaMMeleine.

The confession that ended it

The plot began to unravel when a 36-year old French Algerian conspiratornamed Djamel Beghal was arrested in late July 2001 for passport fraud atDubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. He was trying totravel to back Europe on a false French passport after receiving training inAfghanistan. Trabelsi went to Brussels and disappeared.

Beghal confessed details of the plot after interrogation. Beghal said that hewas relaying instructions from the top brass of Al-Qaida. He recanted parts ofhis confession after he went back to France, claiming that it had been givenunder duress. By August, the Dutch police wiretapped the Rotterdam cell.

The French government opened an inquiry into the plot on 10 September2QQ1,one day before the September11,J2QQ1 attacks occurred. Surveillancehad started that day on a group of suspected terrorists in Corbeil-Essone,

President Jacques Chirac has been the first foreign head of state tovisit the USA in the aftermath of the 11 September tragedy. It wasnot only a visit of courtesy. A day before the tragic events of NewYork and Washington, a Judiciary information has been open inParis about a group of Islamic extremists based in Belgium andNetherlands, which apparently had planned to blow up the Americanembassy, according to the confession of Jamel Beghal, a French-Algerian extremist, arrested last July in Dubai (United ArabEmirates). Jamel himself who has sojourned in the United Kingdomhad been trained in an Afghani military camp as a member of"Attakfirwal hijra " - a radical extremist group to which belongs alsoanother militant arrested on September 13 in Brussels: NizarTrabelsi. The latter is originally from Tunisia. He was dwelling in

Essonne - a Parisian suburb- and had also sojourned at least onetime in Afghanistan. Whether the operation against the Americanembassy in Paris was scheduled to occur at the same time than theAmerican operation or not, is not known. But it seems that the fourpersons arrested last Thursday in Netherlands (: two French, anAlgerian and a Netherlander) are suspected to be linked to JamelBeghal and Nizar Trabelsi. The Netherlands prosecutor has howeverdeclared that there is no evidence of their eventual implication in theterrorist operations in the USA. At the time this story is being posted,the French police have arrested seven other suspects belonging tothe same network.

Just after his return from America, President Chirac received BritishPrime Minister Tony Blair, for a short consultation in the ElyseesPalace. Both leaders pledged to back any " effective U.S. actionagainst the 'menace' of terrorism." After the breakfast meeting,Chirac said:" I believe that neither England nor France could fail topresent if the response is... effective." Mr. Blair, recognizing the "need to take action" said: "I hope that in the next few days wedemonstrate as a world our complete solidarity in this fight which isso important to us."

Paris suspect denies Bin Laden link

Bin Laden 'ordered the attack on the US embassy'

The lawyers of a French-Algerian man havedenied reports that his client confessed toplotting an attack on the US embassy inParis on behalf of Osama Bin Laden.Fabrice Dubest told France 2 television thatearlier statements were made in"indeterminate circumstances" in Dubai.

Djamel Beghal, 35, was extradited onSunday from the United Arab Emirates inconnection with thealleged plot.

He has contestedbeing commissionedby anybody toorganise, prepareand carry outterrorist acts,notably against USinterests in Paris

A French radio report said Mr Beghal had spoken in detail about beingrecruited by Bin Laden, the prime suspect for the 11 Septemberattacks on the US.

Formal investigation

"The key point is that he has contested being commissioned byanybody to organise, prepare and carry out terrorist acts, notablyagainst US interests in Paris," said the lawyer.

Mr Beghal was placed under formal investigation on Monday evening,a step short of being officially charged, for alleged "criminalassociation in connection with a terrorist enterprise".

Europe-1 Radio reported on Tuesday that it had seen the documentoutlining Mr Beghal's confession, in which he spoke of beingrecruited in Afghanistan by Bin Laden's deputy, Abu Zubaydah, for asuicide mission against the embassy.

In the document, the radio station reported, Mr Beghal said that hemet Abu Zubaydah after being summoned to the Bin Laden's houseduring a visit to Kandahar in Afghanistan.

Abu Zubaydah asked him if he was ready for action and told him theplan consisted of blowing up the US embassy in France, thedocument is reported tO Say. The US embassy had not

been seen as a targetThe radio station said the plan, to be carried out some time this year, was to blow up theembassy with a minivan packed with explosives.
