Results of the Meeting

1 Opening remarksPete McLean, the T13 Chair, called the meeting to order at 9:13 A.M. on Tuesday, August 20, 2002. Pete thanked Maxtor Corporation for hosting the meeting.

As is customary, the people in attendance introduced themselves, and a copy of the attendance list was circulated. Copies of the agenda were made available to those in attendance.

The Chair briefly reviewed the meeting rules: T13 is a Technical Committee of INCITS and operates under INCITS rules. Anyone with interest in the work of the committee is free to attend and take part in discussions. However, motions and votes are limited to member organizations, one vote per member organization.

The Chair also noted that T13 operates under the ANSI antitrust guidelines. There should never be discussion of the following topics at any INCITS or an INCITS subgroup meeting:

Any company's prices or pricing policies; Specific R&D, sales and marketing plans; Any company's confidential product, product development or production strategies; Whether certain suppliers or customers will be served; Prices paid to input sources; or Complaints about individual firms or other actions that might tend to hinder a competitor in any

market.

Policies and Procedures and antitrust guidelines for INCITS are available at the web site at www.incits.org. T13 operates under these policies and procedures augmented by the T13 procedures at the T13 web site at www.t13.org.

2 Approval of agendaThe agenda as reflected in these minutes was approved unanimously.

3 Membership and attendanceThe Chair reviewed the rules for membership and attendance:

3.1 Membership

An individual from an organization new to T13 must attend at least one T13 plenary meeting before requesting voting membership. After that meeting, the representative may request membership from the T13 chair stating expertise and material interest in the scope of the committee and pay the required fees to INCITS. Voting privileges begin upon receipt by the INCITS Secretariat of applicable fees for the membership year.

3.2 Fees

Current INCITS memberships fees for Principal or additional Alternates are 800.00 USD. The First Alternate is free with a Principal membership.

Mailings of committee documents are available to any interested party after each plenary meeting. The cost for mailings for one year is 300.00 USD for mailing in the USA and 400.00 USD for mailing to a location outside of the USA.

3.3 Attendance

In addition to payment of fees, there are also minimum attendance and participation requirements to maintain voting membership status on T13. A representative from a member organization must attend two of every three plenary meetings and vote on at least every other letter ballot. If a member organization fails to have a representative in attendance at two of the last three T13 plenary meetings or vote on every other letter ballot, they are warned that failing to attend the next T13 meeting or to vote on the next letter ballot will result in their voting membership being terminated.

Attendance at a working group meeting does not affect voting membership status in T13.

Three voting members were in jeopardy due to lack of attendance: Adaptec, Iomega, and Morgan Link.

Adaptec and Iomega were present and remain voting members. Morgan Link was absent and voting membership was terminated.

Network Appliance has paid fees and became a voting member.

The T13 voting membership during the meeting was 22 organizations.

The number of eligible voting members required for establishing a quorum was 8. 13 member organizations were present at the start of meeting, thus a quorum was present.

7.5 ATA/ATAPI-7 project 1532D

7.5.1 Extended cable lengths (e00151r1) [Goodfellow]Curtis Stevens to submit a project proposal for a technical report

7.5.2 Larger physical sector size (e01138r3) [Colegrove]This proposal was reverted back to version 1 with a couple modification. There was some discussion about incorporation into ATA/ATAPI-7. John Masiewicz expressed that there are many ways to make a drive more efficient. Other members disagreed.

Curtis Stevens moved and Dan Colegrove seconded that this proposal be incorporated into ATA/ATAPI-7. Motion passed 13-1-1-6. Western Digital voted no because they felt that there was no value add and that SATA makes it unnecessary.

7.5.3 Larger logical sector size (e02132r0) [Colegrove]This proposal was split off from e01138r2. This documents the capability to create larger logical sector sizes that are larger than 512 bytes. The drive starts with 512-byte sector size enabled. Software can then enable a mode for 512 byte mode.

There was a discussion about backward compatibility. Forcing the drive to work with both 512 byte and other sector sizes makes the implementation much more complex. It would be better if the drive could just be >512 byte sector size natively. This would cause many problems if one of these drives we placed in a system that did not know about non-512-byte sector sizes.

There was another discussion on the naming of the proposals for using non-512 byte sector sizes. There was a lot of confusion on the use of the terms “logical” and “physical” sector size.

This proposal only applies the larger sector size to 48-bit commands. 28-bit commands are aborted.

Dan asked that an adhoc teleconference be setup for further discussion of the issues. Concern was expressed that SATA would define their own mechanism if we fail to define one in T13. Dan Colegrove asked that comments be placed on the reflector prior to the conference call.

A straw poll was taken to determine if the group thinks that there are users that would use this capability. Result: 9-0

A straw poll was taken to determine if the group supports a drive coming up in 512-byte sector size and then allowing software/firmware to set the size to something greater. Result: 4-5-6

A straw poll was taken to determine if the drive should be formatted to a sector size larger than 512 bytes in a standard way, but is not field changeable. Result: 6-0-9.

7.5.4 Unsolicited interrupts (e02131r0) [Goodfellow]No new information to present.

7.5.5 IDENTIFY DEVICE data to support acoustic testing (e02115r0) [Colegrove]Proposal was modified to place the ISO-7779 time delay parameter in IDENTIFY DEVICE. The group recommended that Dan Colegrove add a method to validate the field.

Curtis Stevens moved and Jim Hatfield seconded that we incorporate this proposal to ATA/ATAPI-7. There was concern expressed that this value could be fudged thus rendering the parameter meaningless. There was some concern that OEM’s may not adopt this as the capability. Motion passed 4-3-7. Sumit Puri expressed that he voted no because he would like to see this be OEM driven.

7.5.6 Device problem condition reporting (e02122r0) [Colegrove]Dan Colegrove presented a list of things we could agree on. The biggest issue seems to be how to report the unsolicited error. The group supported reporting a status in the error register with the error bit off. Curtis Stevens expressed some concern that the error register may be checked even when the error bit was not set.

Dan suggested that we define a log page for the various problem conditions. This would be a dynamic page that changes when conditions change.

There was discussion on levels of severity. You at least want to report about to fail, and spun-down waiting for condition to clear.

The group worked to an agreement on the following:

1. SET FEATURES enables the capability2. READ SMART STATUS is updated so that LBA Low has a flag that indicates the log needs to be

read.3. A log page will be created that has a description of the drive condition

7.5.7 SMART attributes [McLean]Pete McLean reported that only one OEM responded to allow their attribute list to be brought to T13. Pete suggested that the item be dropped from future agenda.

There was discussion on how the attributes would be used. Some people feel that the attributes are mainly for manufacturing prequalification. Others felt that the attributes could be used by end users to diagnose drive problems.

Ron Roberts moved and John Masiewicz seconded that this item be removed from the agenda. Motion passed: 10-3-2.

7.5.8 Burst length for CRC coverage [McLean]Pete McLean reported that the Maxtor CRC/ECC guru Lei Weng indicated that the length of data a CRC provided error detection coverage for was 2n – 1 bits. That is in our case, a data field of 216 –1 less the 16-bit CRC field or 65,519 bits (8189.875 bytes). Pete suggested that a maximum Ultra DMA data burst be limited to 15 sectors (7680 bytes) in ATA/ATAPI-7.

There was some discussion about limiting the burst size versus making a note. Jim Hatfield asked that Pete create a document and start a reflector conversation.

7.5.9 World Wide Name Definition (e02136r0) [Puri]The purpose of this proposal is to add a unique identifier to each disk drive. The identifier follows the same conventions as other World Wide Names used in, SCSI, and Fibre Channel. The identifier is 64 bits in length where 36 bits are a manufacturer unique identifier and 24 bits identify the manufacturer and 4 bits specify the naming authority.

Curtis Stevens asked that this capability, however it is defined, be made mandatory. He asked this because in order for this feature to be useful it needs to be present. Some people wanted to go back and check to see if they have objection to making this mandatory.

Sumit agreed to turn a new revision of the document with more specific information for the next meeting.

7.5.10 AAM for PACKET devices [McLean]Pete McLean reported that discussions with Bill McFerrin and Ralph Weber of T10 indicate that there are no commands equivalent to the ATA AAM commands in any SCSI command set. Pete suggested that the AAM commands be made optional for devices implementing the PACKET command set in

ATA/ATAPI-7. The group agreed that AAM should also be optional for packet devices. Pete will change ATA/ATAPI-7.

7.5.11 WRITE WRONG (e02126r0) [Stevens]There was some discussion regarding the capability. The purpose is to allow a software vendor to test error recovery. The proposal is to create a new command code for WRITE DMA EXTENDED WRONG to the specified starting sector.

7.5.12 ID words for host sector times (e02127r0) [Puri]This proposal adds ID words to support reporting of transfer times for streaming DMA and PIO. Previously the times had to be the same for PIO and DMA. The new parameters are assigned to words 104 and 105 and reflect PIO operation. Words 96 and 97 will be redefined to reflect DMA operation only. The two-week rule was invoked on incorporating this proposal into ATA/ATAPI-7.

7.5.13 Use of DSC with PACKET command (e02131r0) [Hatfield]This documents current and past usage of bit 4 of the status register for ATAPI devices. Jim Hatfield took an action item to provide a list of documents that define DSC and SERV.

There was a discussion on the ATA/ATAPI-7 scope. This scope lists ATAPI documents. The question discussed was what should actually be listed.

Jim is to turn this document into a proposal.

7.5.14 Time Limited Read/Write proposal (e02121r1) [Hatfield]Discussion was postponed until the October meeting.

7.5.15 ATA/ATAPI-7 change bar reviewCompleted change bar review. Pete McLean to turn a new rev for next meeting.

7.5.16 ATA/ATAPI-7 schedule review

Schedule Item Original Prior CurrentProject proposal Aug-01 Aug-01 Aug-01Initial draft Dec-01 Dec-01 Dec-01Proposal cut-off Jun-02 Jun-02 Jun-02Stabilized draft Dec-02 Dec-02 Dec-02Letter ballot Apr-03 Apr-03 Apr-03Forward to INCITS Jun-03 Jun-03 Jun-03

7.6 EDD-3 project 1572D [Stevens]The chair reported that the project proposal was forwarded to INCITS and that the project is approved. The project number 1572D was assigned. The chair noted that the INCITS press release for EDD-3 sparked interest and Curtis Stevens has contributed to an article for Storage magazine as a result.

Curtis did a quick review of the current document with the group.

7.7 Serial ATAThe chair reported that there were no new activities to report.

7.8 IDEMA A/V working group [Fuchigami]Ryosuke Shimizu of IDEMA Japan presented their requests for changes to ATA/ATAPI-7. Some changes were editorial and not listed here.

1. There would like to configure a single stream for both reading and writing 2. URG bit is not required

3. HSE bit is not required4. RC bit needs clarification. Need to change the definition of RC to “…the device shall make the

data available within the specified amount of time…”. There was discussion on the usage of the RC bit. IDEMA requested that ERR be set to 1 if all the data did not transfer. This is in conflict with the purpose of RC which was created to prevent the setting of the ERR bit. Need to clarify the definition of RC bit to include that ERR shall always be zero and SE shall be set to one if an error occurs

5. WC bit needs clarification (see RC)6. Need to define how error recovery works for HSE bit7. Error bit 0 for the stream commands was mislabeled obsolete. IDEMA would like to use this for a

timeout error.

7.9 T13 Reflector, FTP, and Web Site SetupEverybody gave a big cheer for the operation of the FTP and WEB site.

7.10 Open issues listThere are no open issues.

8 New Business8.1 Error in 1.8” dimension [Colegrove]This item was corrected during that ATA/ATAPI-7 document review.

9 Liaison Reports9.1 T10

The latest T10 liaison report from John Lohmeyer has been posted on the T13 web site as e02133r0.

9.2 SFFDan Colegrove reported that a new form factor was being defined for 2.5” 15mm drives. The SAS connector that is SATA compatible is also being defined.

9.3 IDEMAIDEMA is still working on fixed drive sizes.

9.4 Serial ATA IINo new proposals that effect ATA/ATAPI-7. The group has chosen not to use the FUA type commands in development in T13.

10 Call for PatentsThe Chair explained the patent policy. A document is available from ANSI, "Procedures for the Development and Coordination of American National Standards", at no charge. This document is also on the INCITS web site at ftp://www.incits.org/help/ansi_sdo.html. Section 1.2.11 contains the ANSI patent policy. Amy Marasco manages patent issues for ANSI and can be contacted at [email protected] or 212-642-4954.

The Chair then called for patents and/or patent applications that may be necessary to comply with the requirements in T13 standards, draft standards, technical reports, or draft technical reports.
