refugee camp and Kalobeyei settlement. Since March 2019, 31 hydroponic units have been established (13 in Kakuma, 13 in Kalobeyei and 5 in Lodwar, all in Turkana county) with the objective of assessing the viability of using hydroponic approaches and drawing learnings. A mid-pilot review held in the second half of 2019 recommended that the current sites in Lodwar are expanded to increase the number of households, from the current 3 units to a maximum of 10.
The approximately 2,000 beneficiaries targeted, and 31 hydroponic greenhouses established since March 2019 have improved access to fresh foods and dietary diversity, and created livelihoods income generating opportunities in targeted communities. Several hydroponic systems have so far been tested, both horizontal and vertical, and over 80% success rate has been recorded based on the number of units that are operational, planted and harvested, and on the sales realized. Turkana County’s conditions have posed some challenges to the project, including high temperatures and water shortages.
The pilot will run until December 2019, focusing on the development of training guides, enhancing capacity support, building sustainability approaches, effectively documenting learnings from the pilot, and developing a business case for scale up in Turkana county, both among refugee and Kenyans.
T4L (Tech 4 Livelihoods/EMPACT)Over 60% of Kenya’s population is classified as youth. Education has improved over the past decade, but access to jobs and income generating activities remains limited. WFP’s mission
under Tech 4 Livelihoods/EMPACT is to contribute to sustainable food security and resilience by connecting vulnerable youth to income generating opportunities on the internet. WFP Kenya is currently running a small-scale pilot in Kakuma refugee camp and plans to expand the pilot to Kibera informal settlement, working with local NGO partners training youth on digital literacy, and connecting their students to online work opportunities.
The pilot has kicked off with 98 refugees and 50 host community participants in Kakuma refugee camp in late September 2019. Through this pilot, WFP intends to learn whether it can generate adequate work of the right complexity and pay in order to engage the project participants for at least 20 hours a week, how far the projects can be scaled up, and whether there is a business model that can be built towards self-sustainment.
The Kibera pilot is set to kick off in December of 2019, for which WFP Kenya will require additional funds. The project roll out in Dadaab is planned for 2020. Based on learning and streamlining processes, the plan is to have a major scale up of the project in 2020 with a target of reaching up to 3,000 youth by the end of the year.
