Water hyacinth is a tropical water weed with spongy texture commonly found in rivers and lakes in Southeast Asia. Grows densely as clumps of some 8-10 stems, each which the average length of 60-80 centimeters, �oating and clogging waterways.

For Thailand amount of public money has been spent every year to eradicate water hyacinth but could not keep pace with its rapid growth resulting with water pollution.

In order to provide proper incentive for villagers along rivers and lakes in Thailand to actively participate in cleaning their water, it is necessary to turn this weed into income generating material. With several trials and errors, �nally in 1986 water hyacinth has been proved to be a great new environmental friendly material for furniture. At the hands of creative artists water hyacinth furniture is truly an object of arts and beauty. Its simplicity and natural look including its delicate texture have drawn the interests of many interior designers and decorators all over the world.

WATER HYACINTH

Yan Lipao is a fern vine that grows abundantly only in the forests of southern Thailand. This vine, which has an average diameter of 2-3 mm. is naturally available in two colours dark brown and red. Yan Lipao basketry work is a traditional Thai handicraft, which existed as far back as the early Rattanokosin dynasty (around 150 years ago) though its popularity spread to Bangkok during the reign of King Chulalongkorn The popularity of Yan Lipao has continued to the present day, both in Thailand and abroad, thanks to the patronage of her Majesty Queen Sirikit, whose interest and support has ensured the continued success of Thai arts and crafts. This prestigious history has inspired Yothaka to create a limited edition furniture line to introduce Yan Lipao to the world market, following the gracious example set by the Queen’s project.

Yothaka is currently developing a new line of furniture, the PE Plastic Collection 2005. Unlike common plastic furniture, this “recyclable” plastic collection is made out of a polyurethane-polyethylene compound, complemented by the material’s translucent properties, and tailored to the company’s colour and texture speci�cation.

The PE Plastic Collection is Yothak’s product-line expansion into “semi-outdoor” furnishing, not only minimizing problems in recycling and developing bio-alternatives for monomer production, but also creating a design preserving the beauty of the company’s signagnature modern lifestyle design.

In keeping to the spirit of Yothaka’s natural-weave �nished products, the PE Plastic Collection also incorporates the structural construction of the company’s natural pattern line into its design, a plastic-cum-nature synthesis that ultimately achieves a totally new look.

Yothaka International Co., Ltd. presents Pineapple Fiber Paper, a new innovation in “New Asian Style Concept” furniture. Paper in itself is not new to us; the world has been known to use paper for thousands of years in various forms –scribing, printing, packaging, and most recently, even fashion and furniture. Paper has gone through much development and improvements from its invention to the present day, there are now various choices of papers in terms of colors, texture, thickness, quality, etc.

Thailand is the very �rst country to produce Pineapple Fiber Paper and introduce this unique product to the world market, thereby leveraging this innovation to create new jobs in the Thai agricultural sector and new incomes for rural parts of the country. Yothaka International Co., Ltd. is well recognized in Thailand and around the world as a furniture manufacturer with over 20 years of experience in using natural �brous materials. With the introduction of Pineapple Fiber Paper, Yothaka International is developing the use of this breakthrough innovation as the base material for its new furniture collection. Lisu is the name of the colorful ethnic hilltribe group originated in the eastern Tibet, they are to be found in the mountains of China, Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. There are approximately 21,000 Lisus living in Thailand’s northern province of Chaingmai, Mae Hong Sorn and Chiangrai.

For many generations the main means of livelihood for many of Lisu people has been the cultivation of the opium poopy. Some of theses people have given up poppy growing, and are now seeking to supplement their income through the sale of skillfully

produced crafts. The Lisu make their clothing from gaily-coloured cloth stitched into out�ts trimmed with raw upon raw of vari-coloured strips of cloth.

Thank you the patronage of her Majesty Queen Siriket, whose support these people to supplement their opium poppy growing with this colorful cloth stitched rope.Yothaka has been following to supporting and serve this project by making use of this colorful hand stitched rope to re-create and turn to be a newest range of furniture collection call “Lisu-Rope Furniture Collect ion.”
