INTRODUCTION

The results of the first HKDSE Examination were released on 20 July 2012. To enhance the understanding of the standards of the HKDSE Examination, authentic samples of candidates’ scripts are selected to form this set of exemplars to illustrate the performance standards at different levels.

There are 4 papers in this subject. This set of exemplars is selected from candidates’ scripts of Paper 3 to illustrate the typical performance standards at different levels.

It is advisable to read this set of exemplars together with the question papers and the marking schemes in order to understand the requirements of the questions and the marking criteria. The question papers and the marking schemes will be published in the Examination Report and Question Papers for 2012 HKDSE which will be available for sale in October / November this year.

• The candidate shows a good comprehension of all listening tasks in Part 3A including a complex text with an elaborated argument and expressed attitudes.

• The candidate interprets all Data File instructions appropriately and has included most relevant information in the texts created.

• The candidate uses a wide range of written sentence structures and demonstrates an ability to skillfully manipulate the Data File material

• The candidate’s writing is generally accurate although by no means error-free. However any errors that occur do not affect meaning

• Register, tone and style are generally appropriate to the tasks.

• The organization is wholly coherent including congruent endings in Task 8 and 10.

• Register, tone and style are generally appropriate to the tasks.

• The organization of the texts is very clear throughout. This makes for three very readable pieces.

• The candidate shows a good comprehension of the listening tasks in Part 3A including understanding most of a complex text with an elaborated argument.

• The candidate manages to follow the Data File instructions appropriately and includes most relevant information across the three tasks.

• In terms of manipulation of the Data File material, this candidate shows a good ability to integrate material and convey meaning but there are some grammatical errors.

• In terms of his/ her own language, the sentence structure tends to be accurate although rather simplistic.

• Register, tone and style are generally appropriate though the texts sometimes read like an essay.

• The organization is generally coherent but there is an overreliance on sentence-initial connectors.

• The candidate shows a good comprehension of the more straightforward listening tasks in Part 3A. S/he shows less understanding of the more complex texts such as those with an elaborated argument or attitude expressed.

• The candidate locates most relevant information from the Data File. Being the 3B1 Data File, these tend to be generally straightforward texts.

• In terms of manipulation of language from the Data File, this candidate makes an attempt to integrate the material.

• His/her own sentence structures tend to contain errors though these do not generally affect understanding.

• Register, tone and style are reasonable for Tasks 6 and 7. However, the style is too wordy for a flyer in Task 5. Generally the candidate is too reliant on phraseology from Data File.

• The organization is reasonable though some paragraph-internal coherence is lacking.

• The candidate shows a good comprehension of the listening tasks in more straightforward Part 3A. S/he shows less understanding of the more complex texts.

• The candidate locates some of the relevant information from the Data File. However this varies from task to task.

• In terms of manipulation of language from the Data File, this candidate is very reliant on the material from the Data File, often including longish chunks without adapting it from the Data File.

• His/her own sentence structures tend to contain quite significant errors (see Task 8 for example). However, the meaning is generally clear enough.

• Register, tone and style are reasonable although this candidate is so reliant on the Data File that we cannot say that s/he is adapting the materials for any deliberate effect.

• The effectiveness of the organization is variable. Task 10 is clearly organized, Task 8 less so.
