-3-ThemusicprogramisplannedtoprovideeducationandtrainingformusicleadersdesiringtofulfillGod'scalling asworship leaders,ministers ofmusic, choir directors, churchmusicians,music educators andperformers.EmphasisisgiventothedevelopmentofmusicalabilitynecessaryforaneffectiveministryinvariousformsofChristianservice.ItisimperativeindevelopingleadershipandmusicianshipthatthestudentacquiresanacutesensitivitytotheSpiritofGodandHisdirection. Themusicmajor'scourseisademandingoneincludingpracticalministries,thus,excessiveextracurricularactivitiesareseriouslydiscouraged. Motivation for reaching thehighgoalsofmusicministrieswillbeevidencedbythesamedegreeofspiritualcommitmentandmustbeguardedandnurtureddaily.Spiritualandemotionalmaturitywillbeneededinmakingwisedecisionsastodailyuseoftimeandmusicfacilities.The teachersaregenuinely concernedaboutyourmusical and spiritualprogress. Theyexpect you toacceptthechallengeofimprovementfromanadultstandpoint,andareavailableforcounsel.GradesareEARNEDbystudents,notgivenbyteachers.IntheOldTestamenttheofferingsofsacrificeuntoGodweretobeofthefinestquality,bothinsubstanceandattitude.Aswepreparetomakeourmusicalofferingsintheministry,letusalsodeveloptherightattitudesandthefinestqualityofmusicianship.GeneralAdmissionRequirements:(seeAcademicCatalog).TheoryPlacementAssessment:TheTheoryPlacementAssessmentisgiventoallincomingandtransfermusicstudentstodeterminetheorycompetency.All incomingmusicstudentswillenroll inMUS0012BasicMusicianshipI.Theplacementassessmentwillbegiventhefirstdayofclass.Studentswillbeplacedinthepropertheoryclassdependentupontheplacementscores.Iftheassessmentindicatesaweaknessinrudimentaryskills,thestudentwillberequiredtocompleteMUS0012BasicMusicianshipIand/orMUS0022BasicMusicianshipII,beforeenrollinginMUS1114MusicTheoryI. -4-CollegeofMusicandCommunicationArts(WorshipArtsandMusicPerformance);CollegeofBusinessandEducation(MusicEducation).Suggestedtrackingschedulesforallmusicdegreeplansareincludedinthishandbook.(AppendixA).RequirementsforIncoming/TransferStudentsAllstudentsenteringthemusicdepartmentshouldhavebasicskillsinpianoandvoice/instrumental.TheVoicePlacementAssessment(VPA)andthePianoPlacementAssessment(PPA)willbeadministeredbytheappliedmusic facultyduring the firstweekofeachsemester, inorder todetermine thestudent’sreadinesstobeginstudyinvoiceorpiano.TheVPAandPPAwillascertainwhetherthestudentshouldenrollinappliedmusic(1000level),orinClassPianoorClassVoice.StudentswhoareadvisedtoenrollinClassPianoorClassVoicemustpassthePPA/VPAbeforetheywillbeallowedtoenrollinappliedmusic.EnrollmentinClassPianoorClassVoicedoesnotfulfilltheappliedmusicrequirementformusicmajors.(ThereisnoInstrumentalPlacementAssessmentatthistime).ThefollowingvocalskillswillbeevaluatedontheVPA:1. Demonstrateabilitytosight-singamusicalline. 2. Demonstrateadegreeofnaturaltalentandpotentialforsuccessinadvancedvocalstudies.3. Musiceducationmajors,whoseprimaryappliedmusicareaispianoorinstrumental,mustalso

demonstratevocalproficiency.ThesestudentswillnotberequiredtopasstheVPA;however,studentsmustenrollinonesemesteroflowerdivisionnon-majorvoicelesson(MAP1201)aswellasonesemesterofChoir(MUE1161).

ThefollowingpianoskillswillbeevaluatedonthePPA:1. Demonstrateabilitytoreadmusicinboththetrebleandbassclefs.2. DemonstrateabilitytoplaymusicselectedfromLevelOneoftheBastienPianoRepertoire.RequirementsforEntranceintoUpperDivisionStudies(3000level)Attheendofthesophomoreyearallmusicmajorswillbeexpectedtodemonstratemasteryofthevocal,piano,orinstrumentaltechniquesdescribedbelow.TheVocalProficiencyExamination(VPE),thePianoProficiencyExamination(PPE)andtheInstrumentalProficiencyExamination(IPE)willbeadministeredbytheappliedmusicfaculty,andshouldbeperformedduringthescheduledjuryexamweek.Musicmajorswillberequiredtoattempttheproficiencyoftheirmajorspecializationandthepianoproficiencyattheendofthefourthsemesterofstudy.ProficiencyExamRequirementsRequirementsfortheVPE(VoiceMajors):1. Demonstrate the ability to sing solo vocal selections in three languages other than English

(German,Italian,Latin,andFrench).OtherlanguagesmaybeacceptedwithpriorapprovaloftheSAGUvoicefaculty.

c. Demonstrate the ability to play all major/minor, diminished/augmented, dominantseventh,andmajor/minorseventharpeggiosinfouroctaves.

2. Sight Reading - Demonstrate the ability to sight read one 4-part hymn, one simplevocal/instrumentalaccompanimentandaBachChorale.

3. Repertoire -Demonstrate theability toperformtwomemorizedpiecesof contrastingmusicalstyles. Repertoire must be memorized and performed at an acceptable tempo and anappropriatestyle.

4. Improvisation-Demonstratetheabilitytosightreadandimprovisebyplayingstanzasofahymnwithoutstopping. Studentsarenotrequiredtomemorizethehymn. Treatthestanzas inthefollowingmanner:a. Stanza1:Giveanintroduction,andplaythehymnaswritten.b. Stanza 2: Play the hymn using improvised form**, maintaining original melody &

c. Studentmustplaytheentirepiecetothebestoftheirability.2. Repertoire - Demonstrate the ability to perform two memorized (if applicable) pieces of

contrasting musical styles. Acceptable repertoire for proficiency will be taken from the

3. Technique- a. Demonstratetheabilitytoplayallmajorandminorscalesintwooctaves(3octavesfor

strings). b. Demonstratetheabilitytoplayallmajor/minorarpeggiosintwooctaves(threeoctaves

forstrings). 4. Knowledgeofthefollowing:

a. Woodwinds:FundamentalArticulation,secondoctaveandcrossingthebreak,trillsand vibrato.b. Brass: Characteristics common to all brass instruments, slide positions and fingering

patterns.Basicunderstandingofpedagogy.c. Percussion: Fundamental rudiments as prescribed in a pre-designated list, basic

knowledgeandplayingabilityofmelodicpercussioninstruments.d. Strings:Shifting,fundamentalarticulation,trillsandvibrato,basicstrummingandchordal

accompaniments. 5. Arepertoirelistofworksstudiedinthefirstfoursemestersofinstrumentalstudyshouldalsobe

submittedattheIPEjuryhearing.ThislistwillbekeptonfilewiththeresultsoftheIPE.Thestudentwillbeguidedthroughvocal/piano/instrumentalstudywiththesegoalsinmind,andmoststudentswillbeabletosuccessfullyachievethesegoalsbythefourthsemester.IfthestudentispreparedtotaketheVPE/PPE/IPEpriortothefourthsemester,theexammaybetakenatanearlierjurywiththeinstructor’s approval. However, if the applied music faculty believes that the student has notdemonstratedproficiency in anyof these areas, the studentwill be required to do so at a later date(usuallythefollowingsemester).StudentsmustbeenrolledinaclasswithaSAGUmusicprofessororanapprovedmusicprofessorbytheuniversityinAppliedPiano/AppliedVoice/AppliedInstrumentalforthesemester inwhichthepiano/voiceproficiency/instrumentalproficiencyisattempted. StudentsWILLNOTproceedtoupperlevelofstudyuntilproficiencyisattained.Inaddition,studentswhodonotpassthePPE/VPE/IPEwillbepermittedtorepeatthesection(s)notpassed.However,thestudentwillbecounseledbyinstructorandaplanwillbepresentedtotheMusicDepartmentChairforapprovaltobringthestudentintocomplianceinallareas.ThestudentwillenrollinlowerlevelMAPandwillbereassessedthefollowinglongsemester.Ifthestudentisunsuccessfulinpassingthefailedarea(s),thestudentwillbecounseledbytheMusicDepartmentChairandrequiredtoenroll in lowerlevelMAP. Ifthestudentisunsuccessful inpassingthedeficientarea(s)inthefollowinglongsemester,thestudentwillmeetwiththeDeanofMusicandCommunicationArtsforfurtheraction.RequirementstoEXITfromtheProgramAllmusicstudentsmustdemonstrateproficiency intheirprimaryspecializationbeforegraduation,perthefollowingstandards.WorshipArtsandPerformanceMajors-showproficiencyinthefollowingareas: 1. Voice/Instrumental-determinedbythevoice/instrumentalproficiencyexam(Seepage5/6).6. Performance-determinedbytheSeniorRecital/NightofWorship.MusicEducationMajors-showproficiencyinthefollowingareas: 1. Education-determinedbytheeducation/pedagogycoursesandstudentteaching.2. Theory - based upon ability to analyze compositions, orchestrate and arrange works for

Performance-determinedbytheSeniorRecital.AppliedMusicPolicyRegistration-Registrationforprivatelessonsisacommitmentforthesemester.NOfinancialrefundscanbemadetostudentsmissingprivatelessonsforanyreason.Studentsarenotpermittedtoregisterformorethantwo(2)credithoursofappliedlessonpersemesterwiththesamemusicinstructor.Credit -Eachcredit involvesa30-minuteprivate lessonandaminimumof fivehoursofpracticeeachweek.Twocreditsinvolvea60-minuteprivatelessonandaminimumof10hoursofpracticeeachweek.Scheduling-Itisthestudent’sresponsibilitytofillouttheappliedmusicscheduleformatthebeginningofeachsemester.Aftertheinstructorandstudenthaveagreedonaconvenienttimeforthelesson,basedontheschedulesuppliedbythestudent,thestudentisexpectedtobefaithfultothatschedule.Oncemusiclessonsareassigned,schedulescannotbechangedwithoutpriorarrangementswiththerespectiveinstructor.TheinstructorisNOTobligatedtochangealessontimefortheconvenienceofthestudent.Ifthe student isunable to takea lessonas scheduled, the studentmust contact the teacheras soonaspossible.(AppendixB).Make up lessonswill only be given at the discretion of the individual instructor. The student is heldresponsibleforlearningthemusicpriortothelesson.Theinstructorisnotobligatedtoteachalessonifthestudentisunprepared.Grades-Basiccriteriaforgradesareasfollows:attendance,attitude,studentparticipationinthelesson,practice,musical progress, jury performance, and recital performance. Aminimum of FIVE hours ofpracticeperweekforeachonehourcreditwillberequired.Continuouslackofpracticeandpreparationforprivatelessonsmayresultinsuspension.(AppendixB).Attendance-Southwestern’son-campusprogramisdesignedasanin-classlearningexperience.Inthis

-9-type of instructional setting, the ability to pass examinations and complete outside projects is only apartialmeasureofthestudent’sknowledge,skills,understanding,andappreciationofthesubjectmatter.Therefore,studentsarerequiredtomaintainregularandpunctualclassattendance.LowerLevelMAP:Ifanyquestionarisesconcerningastudent’sattendance,theMusicDepartmentwillenforcetheattendancepolicycontainedintheAcademicPoliciesdocumentlocatedinBlackboard.A student who is absent from a lesson is totally responsible to make the appropriate advancedarrangementswiththefacultymemberforpossiblemake-upwork. Thefacultymemberwillhavetheprerogativetodetermineifastudentmaymake-upanylessonduetoastudent’sabsencealongwiththetimeframeinwhichtheworkmustbecompleted.However,nopointreductionwillbeimposeduponastudent’sfinalgradeforabsenteeism.Therewillbenoprovisionformake-uplessonsduetothenumberofappliedlessonsbeingtaughtbytheinstructorperweek.Make-uplessonswillonlybegiveniftheinstructormissesthelesson.Tardiness-Studentsmissingfifteenminutesofa lessonwillbecountedasabsentforthat lesson,andeverythreetardiesacquiredinclassesthatmeetthreetimesaweek,andeverytwotardiesacquiredinclasses thatmeet twice aweekwill be considered as an absence incurring the samepenalty. (Sinceappliedlessonsonlymeetonceaweek,onetardywillbeconsideredasanabsence,incurringthesamepenalty).Studentsmustwait15minutesfortheirteacherbeforeleavingthelessonunlesstheyhavebeennotifiedotherwise.Thestudentmustsignarollsheetbeforeleavingortheywillbecountedabsentforthatlesson.Therollsheetmustbeplacedintheinstructor’sofficedoorbox.JuryExaminationsAllappliedmusicstudentsmustmeetforajuryexamforeachappliedlessonattheendofeachsemester.Exception:ThejuryattheendofthesemesterduringwhichaJunior/Seniorrecitaloccursmaybewaivedatthediscretionoftheinstructoraswellasthesemesteroftheproficiencyexam.Themusicfacultywillbeinattendanceforthejuryexam.Thestudentmustsignupforatime.Jurysign-upformswillbepostedoutsidetheVoice/Instrumental/PianoCoordinator’sofficestwoweekspriortojuryexaminations.Juryexamformsaretobecompletedintriplicatebythestudentandpresentedattheexamtime.Theseareavailablefromthe instructor,or intheAppendixSectionofthisManual,andshouldbecompletedseveraldaysinadvanceofthejury.Therepertoireportionofthisformisforwardedtothestudent’sfileintheinstructor'soffice.Thejuryexamwillinclude:Aselectionofthejury’schoice,aselectionofthestudent'schoiceandanyitemfromtherepertoirelist.Thetechnicalmaterialsstudiedforeachsemesterarealsorequired.VoiceJuryRequirements:(SeeAppendixC).PianoJuryRequirements:(SeeAppendixD).InstrumentalJuryRequirements:(SeeAppendixE).

-10-ObjectivesandPurposesforRecitalsItismostimportantforthemusicstudenttodevelopperformanceskills.Theseskillsareoflittlevalueunlessthestudenthaslearnedtousethemunderthepressureofpublicperformance.Experiencehasrevealedthatpositiveopportunitiesforpublicperformancehelptobuildmoreconfidenceandsuccessasaperformer.TheSAGUmusicfacultydesignsacalendarandrecitalprogramswhichallowforanumberofperformanceexperiencesforthemusicstudent.Theseopportunitieswillhelpthestudenttodevelopconfidencethatwill enhance theirministryuntoGod, and that theywill learn tominister toothers as theHoly Spiritinspires. Recitalattendanceisrequiredofallmusicmajors(MAP1000RecitalAttendance).Musicmajorswillberequiredtoattendaminimumofseventypercent(70%)ofallrecitalsheldoncampuseachsemester.Non-musicmajorsenrolledinappliedmusicwillberequiredtoattendaminimumofthreerecitals.GeneralStudentRecitalsareheldeachMondayat4:15p.m.inBurkeHall,locatedintheHageeCommunicationCenter,beginningthesecondweekofclasses.Recitalswillincludeperformancesbymusicstudentsandfaculty,musicdepartmentforums,andlecturesbyspecialguestsandmusicfaculty.Eveningrecitalsareheldatvarioustimesthroughoutthesemesterandwillbeadvertisedinchapel,postersintheHageeCommunicationCenterandaroundcampus.Attendanceisdeterminedbystudentssigninganattendanceslipwhichwillbedistributedateachrecital/performance.

MusicMajors(WorshipArts,MusicPerformance,andMusicEducation)arerequiredtohavesix(6)semestersofRecitalAttendancecreditonthetranscriptforgraduation.

A.A.andMusicMinorsarerequiredtohavetwo(2)semestersofRecitalAttendancecreditonthetranscriptforgraduation.

II. RecitalPerformance

General Student Recitals—Performance and Scheduling General recitalswill be open to allappliedstudents. Nomorethantenstudentswillbeallowedtoperformonanygivenrecital.Preference will be given to upper division students and to those who have not met theperformancerequirements.Studentswhowishtoperformmorethantwiceareencouragedtodoso;however,thesestudentswillonlybeallowedtoperformonageneralrecitaliftheprogramis not full.Allmusicmajorsmust perform in the general recitals scheduled throughout thesemester.UnlessthisrequirementiswaivedbytheappliedlessoninstructorwithapprovalfromMusicDepartmentChair.

III. RecitalHearings

AllstudentswhoareplanningtogiveaSeniorRecitalwillberequiredtogiveahearingoftheplanned recital prior to the scheduled recital date. This hearing is to determine the student’sreadiness to present the recital publicly. This recital hearing will be held on any Mondaydesignatedas“RecitalHearings”.Thestudent’saccompanist(s)[whenapplicable]arerequiredtoattendthishearing.TherecitalhearingwillbepresentedbeforeacommitteeoftheSAGUmusicfacultywhichwillincludethemusicdepartmentchair,student’sinstructorandothermembersofthemusicfaculty.

RecitalhearingswillbegradedPass/Fail.Studentsmustpasstherecitalhearingbeforetherecitalperformancewillbescheduled.Studentswillbegivenonlytwoopportunitiestopasstherecitalhearing.Inordertopasstherecitalhearing,studentsmustnotonlydemonstratetalent,butmustalsodemonstratetechnicalproficiencyintheselectedinstrumentorvoice.StudentsmustalsopreparerecitalswhichfollowtheguidelinesforseniorrecitalsintheSAGUMusicHandbook.Apassinggradewillbegiventothosestudentswhoareabletodemonstratetechnicalproficiency,completememorization(ifapplicable)oftheappropriateselectedliterature,asenseofstyleinregard to thedifferentperiods fromwhich themusichasbeen chosen, and correctdiction inregardstoalllanguagesstudied(vocalmajorsonly).

IV.JuniorRecitalsAllWorshipArtsmajorsandMusicPerformancemajorswillberequiredtogiveaJuniorRecital

asoneoftherequirementsfortheirdegree(MAP3200JuniorRecital).WorshipArtsmajorshavetheoptionofaNightofWorshiporperformingavocal,instrumentalorpianorecital,subjecttotheapprovaloftheirprimaryinstructor.AJuniorRecitalwillinvolveaminimumof30minutesofactualperformance.Themusicfacultywilldeterminewhethertherecitalmeetstherequirementfor the degree prior to the performance. This judgment will be based upon interpretation,technique,memorization(ifapplicable),andgeneralmusicianship.Iftherecitalisnotaccepted,itmustberepeated.

V. SeniorRecitals

AllgraduatingMusicmajorswillberequiredtogiveaSeniorRecitalasoneoftherequirementsforadegree(MAP4010SeniorRecital).WorshipArtsmajorshavetheoptionofNightofWorshipor performing a vocal, instrumental or piano recital, subject to the approval of their primaryinstructor.ASeniorRecitalwill involveaminimumof50minutesofactualperformance. Themusicfacultywilldeterminewhethertherecitalmeetstherequirementforthedegreepriortotheperformance.Thisjudgmentwillbebaseduponinterpretation,technique,memorization(ifapplicable), and general musicianship. WorshipLeadingRequirementsTheWorshipLeadingPresentationwillconsistofthefollowing: 1. Thestudentmustpresentnolessthan50minutesofworshipleading.2. The student will select their own vocal/instrumental group(s). The group(s)must be

approvedbytheMusicDepartment.3. The student shall be responsible for the selection and rehearsal of the music to be

Senior Recital Policies -Degree recitals will be recorded upon the student’s request. Thesupervising music instructor must contact [email protected] one month before therecitalandmakearrangements.Emphasisisplaceduponexcellenceinperformanceratherthanonnon-musicalconsiderations.Itisexpectedthatthestagesettingsforrecitalswillbekeptsimple.Speciallighting,extraordinarydecorations, intricate props, and unusual effects of various kinds are discouraged. Items inquestionshouldbeapprovedbytheappliedinstructorandtheRecitalCoordinator.

Thestudentisresponsibleforallset-upandclean-upoftheperformancefacility,receptionarea,etc.priortoandimmediatelyfollowingtherecital.

Students giving recitals should not feel obligated to provide flowers or gifts for instructors,accompanists,ushers,orothersassistingwiththeprogram.

Engraved invitationsareunnecessary. Thosewishing to invite friends, relatives, students,andfacultyoutsidetheMusicDepartmentmaysendacopyoftheprogramwithashorthandwrittennote.

Flashpicturesshouldbetakenbeforeorfollowingtheprogramratherthanwhilethestudentisperforming.Receptions followingdegree recitalsareconsideredappropriate,butmustbeprovidedby thestudent’sfamilyorfriends.Programs/Posters: 1. Allprogramnotesaretobewrittenbythestudentandeditedbytheappliedinstructor

priortosubmissionforprinting. 2. StudentsareencouragedtousetheSouthwesternAssembliesofGodUniversitymusic

programtemplate.TheprogrammustbeapprovedbytheRecitalCoordinator.3. Allpostersmustbereadyforpostingatleast10dayspriortotherecital.4. Allprogramsmustbeprintedatleast2dayspriortotherecital.

Wednesday,SaturdayandSundaySeniorRecitalsarenotpermitted.

RecitalEtiquetteAllrecitalistsshouldmaketheirentrancesandexitsfromtheleftsideofthestageorplatform.It

-14-isimportantfortherecitalisttoshowappreciationforaudienceapplause.Bowingistheacceptedformofacknowledgment.

Properetiquetteandtheultimatecourteousbehaviorbeginbyputtingyourselfintheperformer'sposition. Youcanencourageyourpeersandfriendsbyyourenthusiasmandshowingpositiveresponse to their efforts andhardwork. Whistling and vocal cheering is unacceptable. Onlyapplause isappropriate.Membersof theaudienceshouldnot talkorwhisperduringa recital.Entering or leaving the auditorium during the performance is unacceptable behavior. If it isabsolutelynecessarytoarrivelateorleaveearly,recitalattendeesshouldbeseatedinthebackoftheauditoriumandenterorexitbetweenselections.

VoiceCurriculumGuide

The exact nature of applied voice instruction for the non-major will be left to the discretion of theindividual instructor. However,thevocal facultywillberequiredtoteacheachappliedvoicemajor inorder toprepare thestudent for theVocalProficiencyExamination (VPE)and for furtherstudy. Eachinstructorshouldfamiliarizehimselforherselfwiththefollowingguidelinesforchoiceofvocalliterature.FirstYear-LowerDivisionStudyThe freshman year is a year of assimilation and new learning and the new voice student is probablyunawareofmanyfacetsofthevocalarts.Emphasisshouldbeplacedonthefollowingaspectsofvocalstudy: 1. Thenatureofbreathcontrol.2. Propervocalsupport.3. Correctdiction.4. Beginningperformanceexperience,bymeansoftheweeklyrecitals.5. StudyofsongsinEnglishandItalian,withanintroductiontoGermanLieder(allsongsshouldat

SecondYear-LowerDivisionStudyThesophomoreyearisayearofcontinuedstudyandthevoicestudenthasbynowbecomemorefullyawareofthevocalartsandhisorherownrepertoireandvoicing.Theareasofbreathsupport,dictionandperformanceshouldagainbeemphasized. Thesecondyearofcollegestudyshouldbefilledwithmuchnewrepertoireandnewlanguagestudy.Thefollowingareasshouldbeintroduced: 1. GermanLieder,ifnotbegunintheFreshmanyearshouldbebegun.2. IfMUS2212hasnotbeentakenitmustbetakenbeforetheendofthesecondyearofvoice

5. Thesamenumberofsongsshouldbestudiedduringthesecondyearoflower-divisionstudyaswerestudiedinthefirstyear;however,thedifficultylevelofthesongsshouldimprove.

totaketheVocalProficiencyExamination(VPE)attheendofthefourthsemester. Allvoicemajors,whohavecompletedfoursemestersofappliedvoicestudywillberequiredtotaketheVPEatthistime.Atthispointavocalcommittee,appointedbytheMusicDepartmentHeadwilldeterminewhethertheindividualstudentispreparedtobeginupperdivisionvocalstudy.(SeefollowingsectionconcerningtheVPEjuryformat).

FirstYear-UpperDivisionStudyNote: If the student did not pass all areas of theVocal Proficiency Examination (VPE), the third-yearstudent will be required to enroll in lower-division study for additional semesters until all areas ofproficiencyaresuccessfullyattained.StudentswhopassaportionoftheVPEwillberequiredtoenrollinanadditionalremedialsemesteratlower-divisionlevel,butwillonlybetestedonareasinwhichproficiencywasnotattained.Bythejunioryear,thestudentknowswellthecapabilitiesanddeficienciesofhisorherownvoice.Duringthejunioryear,thestudentisrequiredtogiveajuniorrecitalofsacredselections(pleaseseenumber6inthissectionforfurtherdetails).ThestudentshouldhavestudiedEnglish,German,andItalianartsongs,andsomeoperaandoratorioarias.Thefollowingareasshouldbeemphasized:1. Perfecting modern performance styles as well as attempting to become more historically

informedintheperformanceofearlyvocalmusic.2. StudyofFrenchartsongs.3. IntroductionofFrenchIPA.4. Opera,oratorio,andmoredifficultsacredliteratureshouldalsobeemphasized,withcontinued

studyofmoredifficultGermanandEnglishartsongs.5. At least 12 songs should be memorized during the junior year. Though gospel songs and

ContemporaryChristianMusic(CCM)songsmaybeutilizedinlessons,thesesongsshouldbeusedprimarilyforpreparationfortheJuniorRecital.

6. Duringthejunioryear,thevoicemajorwillberequiredtoperformajuniorrecitalofsacredorgospelandContemporaryChristianMusicselectionsofatleast30minutesworthofmusic.Thefirsthalfofthejuniorrecitalwillconsistofmoretraditionalgospelandsacredselections,whilethesecondhalfwillbedevotedtomorecontemporaryChristianselections.

VocalJuryRequirements1. Thosestudentswhoarevoicemajors(lowerdivision),andareenrolledfor1hourcredit,willbe

requiredtogiveajury.Thestudentwillberequiredtoperformoneselection,preferablyinaforeignlanguageoramoredifficultEnglishartsong(atleastattheleveloftheFirstBookseries).Allvoicemajorswhoareenrolledfortwohourscreditwillberequiredtoperformforthevocaljurytwoselectionsofcontrastingstyleandlanguage.

2. Thosestudentswhoarerequiredtotakethevocalproficiencyattheendofthesophomoreyearmust be prepared to give an extended jury performance.
