Hymn of Praise Unison ScriptureWE’VE COME THIS

    FAR BY FAITHRefrain

    We’ve come this far by faith, Leaning on the Lord;

Trusting in His holy word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh can’t turn around, We’ve come this far by faith.

    Verse 1Don’t be discouraged

When trouble’s in your life, He’ll bear your burdens and Move all misery and strife.

    That’s why we’ve come this far by faith, Leaning on the Lord;

Trusting in His holy word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh can’t turn around, We’ve come this far by faith.

Verse 2Just the other day I heard someone say

He didn’t believe in God’s word; But I can truly say that God has made a way,

And He’s never failed me yet. That’s why we’ve come this far by faith,

Leaning on the Lord; Trusting in His holy word, He’s never failed me yet.

Oh can’t turn around, We’ve come this far by faith.

MARK 10:46-52 (NIV)46Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus. 51“What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him. The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.” 52“Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

HOWARD GOSPEL CHOIR OF HOWARD UNIVERSITY, founded in the fall of 1968 by Melanie Russell (Lee) and Rosalind Thompkins (Lynch), the Howard Gospel Choir (HGC) of Howard University is the first collegiate choir of its kind in the world. The choir is currently under the musical direction of Howard alumni, Reginald Golden; Darrell Brown, also a Howard alumni, serves as the choir’s assistant musical director.

Exceptional musicians have always been instrumental in shaping HGC’s unique sound to embrace both contemporary and traditional gospel, church hymns, Negro spirituals and classically arranged anthems. For over two decades, the late Arphelius Paul Gatling, III, largely responsible for crafting the unique sound of the choir, served as the Musical Director.

HGC has pioneered an international legacy in gospel music ministry. With an active roster of seventy-plus persons, the choir is one of the largest religious life organizations on campus, operating under the historic Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel. The Dean of the Chapel, Rev. Dr. Bernard Richardson, serves as the choir’s advisor.

In addition to distinguished professionals in every imaginable discipline, past members of this award- winning ensemble include Grammy award winners Richard Smallwood, Coré Cotton (member of Sounds of Blackness), Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark of the legendary Clark Sisters, and R&B star, Angela Winbush.

The choir has been blessed to receive national exposure, having appeared from coast to coast within the continental United States, and international exposure, having served as cultural ambassadors to countries such as Canada, Croatia, Denmark, Italy, Montenegro, Sweden and the Caribbean island of Barbados, and have participated in other cultural exchange activities and conducted a number of master classes discussing various vocal exercises and the history of Gospel Music.

Notwithstanding the legacy of excellence and the vast accomplishments since its inception, HGC ’s main objective remains the same: to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ through song. Our purpose and passion is to serve Christ with our musical gifts bringing peace, restoration, healing and inspiration to all who will lend their ears and hearts. It’s more than just singing; this is ministry.

As we prepare for our churchwide Lenten season fast, keep in mind our 2017 Theme – Growing in Christ. Our reset cards for 2017 reflect the monthly scriptures supporting our theme, focusing on a separate growth message each month. For the time of our fast, the themes will focus on Growing in Love and Growing in the Word of God. You are encouraged to use this resource as a source of inspiration during our fasting period and beyond. Fasting is a spiritual disciple designed to deepen our relationship with Jesus Christ. We do not fast to lose weight; we fast to be empowered by Jesus Christ. In 2017, as we seek to renew our relationship with God, God will reveal God’s purpose and plan in your life, if you dare fast, pray, study, and learn the power of quiet time. Jesus had to steal away from the crowd and spend time with his Father in the mountains to pray, study, reflect, meditate, and center his spirit. If fasting and prayer were the disciplines of Jesus, shouldn’t this be followed by us? Join with us this season and witness a breakthrough – as we fast, pray, study, reflect, meditate, and learn the power of quiet time.

Question: I have never fasted before?Answer: Consult your doctor first!* Fasting is not the removal of all food from your diet. Fasting is learning to discipline your mind, body and spirit to remove “something” you know hinders your ability to function at your highest capacity, from your life or diet.

Question: Is fasting biblical?Answer: Fasting is biblical. Throughout the Old and New Testaments, fasting was used by the people of God to prepare for a spiritual challenge, hear God’s voice before making a major decision, and for removing destructive forces in your life.

    Fast #1 - Fasting to confront destructive forces• March 1 – March 7

    Eat all your meals before 6:00 p.m.• March 8 – March 14

    Eat only two meals before 6:00 p.m.• March 15 – March 21

    Eat only one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.• March 22 – March 28

    Drink only juices, water, and/or tea• March 29 – April 4

Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.

    • April 5 – April 15 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet

Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

could fast eating only fruits and vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.

    • March 1 – March 7 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.

    • March 8 – March 14 Eat only two meals a day, before 6:00 p.m.

    • March 15 – March 21 Eat only fruits and vegetables, before 6:00 p.m.

    • March 22 – March 28 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat may be added.

    • March 29 – April 4 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.; meat may be added.

    • April 5 – April 15 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life. One type of fasting is to remove certain foods from your diet, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas, or refined sugar and/or flour.

*Please seek the advice of your primary care provider/doctor before beginning a fast that involves restricting food/calories and/or medication. Your doctor can help you design a fasting plan that protects your health and well-being. This is extremely important if you are pregnant or have a medical condition. Medical condition examples include, but are not limited to those who have a chronic disease such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, recent surgery, etc.

AnnouncementsWelcome Home! The Endeleo Institute, consistent with its mission to strengthening existing assets in the Washington Heights community, is embarking on a housing improvement initiative as part of an exciting new partnership with the Cook County Land Bank (CCLB). Last year, we shared that Washington Heights was among a select group of communities identified by CCLB showing great promise as a target area for investment, especially for single family and two-flat homes like the one in the photo, which just happens to be Endeleo’s first acquisition in progress. Yes!

Last year, a property in a 10100 block in Washington Heights that languished in foreclosure for six years was recently restored by an inspiring husband and wife rehab team and today, at last report, the fully-restored property is on the market for more than $150,000. Affordable homeownership and jobs are the keys to strengthening a community. Also last year, Pastor Moss wrote in a Chicago Tribune commentary how we must work at increasing home ownership in marginalized communities as key to replacing the missing bricks in the broken walls of our community and Chicago.

Through our housing initiative, we plan to engage our community to generate employment opportunities, especially for our at-risk youth to maintain these homes until they are rehabilitated and sold. It is part of an innovative Two-Generation strategy for young people (mainly ages 18-24) who may be parents themselves and need work to support family. (The unemployment rate for this age group is above 22% here.)

In the coming months, you will hear more about how to get involved in the healing of our community on the path to revitalizing the 95th Street Corridor. Meantime, stay close to home.

2017 Churchwide Theme18But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18 (NRSV)

1st Quarter Theme: Growing in LoveJanuary - Ephesians 3:16-19 (NRSV)16I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, 17and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. 18I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19 and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

February - Philippians 1:9-11 (NRSV)9And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight 10to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, 11having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.

March - John 13:34 (NRSV)34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.

2nd Quarter Theme: Growing in the Word of God

April - Colossians 3:16 (NRSV)16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.

May - Luke 8:14 (NRSV)14As for what fell among the thorns, these are the ones who hear; but as they go on their way, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

June - 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)15Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

3rd Quarter Theme: Growing in HolinessJuly - 2 Corinthians 7:1 (NIV)1Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

August - Romans 12:2 (NIV)2Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

September - Exodus 15:2 (MSG)God is my strength. God is my song, and, yes! God is my salvation. This is the kind of God I have and I’m telling the world!

4th Quarter Theme: Maturing in ChristOctober - James 1:2-4 (NIV)2Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

November - Hebrews 5:12-14 (NIV)12In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

December - 1 Corinthians 13:11 (NIV)11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
