Creating and Editing a Database
I. Create a CSV file to build your database 1. Open Excel
2. Type the student’s first name in column A
3. Type the student’s last name in Column B
4. Save the document = file > save as
5. Save as a CSV (common delimited) file
a. click on the drop down arrow to the right of ‘save as type’

b. select CSV (comma delimited) & save it to your desktop (it’ll be easy to locate)
c. save
6. Dialog box will appear, select OK
7. A secondary dialog box will appear on compatibility, select Yes

8. Close out the excel sheet, you will get a dialog that ask if you want to save again
9. Select Don’t Save
10. The desktop should have a file w/ an excel symbol, the letter a with a comma
II. Assigning Your Students to the Database Use the following method to upload mass students to populate your database. Once this is
completed, your file will stay with your computer (not with the hub). After you build
the database, randomly hand out the devices and follow the steps (start at step 18 listed below) to
assign students by pin. This part is a quick step to do each time you randomly hand out your
devices without individual assigning a specific device to each student.
1. Open ActivInspire
2. View browser

3. Click on ActiVote icon on the right
4. Next, click on the ActiVote w/ a card in front of it
(to the left of the type of device is listed)
5. A dialog box will open to assign student to devices
6. Select edit database
7. Edit database dialog box will open

8. Chose import
9. Your computer files will open
10. Click desktop on the left, and find your file on the right, click open

11. Import CSV File dialog box will open
12. Click on Not Mapped to finish the import process and select Forename and Last
Name to link your student names, then Import
13. Your database will now have students to populate

14. Select Add Class
15. Enter a Class Name and a Teacher name – create a different class for each group
of students i.e. 2nd, intervention, etc

16. Move students to your group by clicking on the class (previously created),
highlight the student name, selecting the arrow on the left to add to the class,
select OK when complete
17. You will now see the dialog box for assigning students to devices, If you’ve
created more than 1 student list, you use the drop down menu to select a group

shift key will allow multiple students to be
selected), click the double arrow << that
Side note: to remove students follow the
same process, except you will click on their
name on the left and use the >> arrow to
remove them from the selected class

18. Once you have your students listed, select assign devices by PIN, assign devices
19. Individual Device PIN’s will now be listed beside each student’s name, have the
student pick up the votes and enter the code
20. As the student enters the code, the color will change indicating that it’s complete
21. When everyone has entered their individual code, select finish
22. The computer will now assign the device to the student
(This is the method to use when randomly handing out the device to students)

Using Your Voting Devices
1. Plug the hub into your computer 2. You have 2 options:
use a question wizard (page 12), click the green button
located on the tool bar
omit creating a question BUT want immediate feedback for a
lesson, you launch express poll (page 15). This option works as a response
system when you haven’t used a question database but are either verbally
quizzing student or using the pen feature to write a question
3. Hand the votes out to your students
4. On your flipchart toolbar click, the lime green play button
5. Vote
As students are voting, the device # will highlight yellow
You may stop the timer if students finish early
6. If all students haven’t voted, it will ask if you will like to let them vote again
7. The results will show up on your screen (you may change the results to a
horizontal bar graph, pie chart etc. by clicking on the pull down tab)
8. Clicking on the Clipboard on the upper right hand corner, you can paste your
results to the flipchart page
9. After voting, on each page of your flipchart, you may export your results to Excel:
a. on left side of your flipchart, open up your browser (View, Browsers)
b. Click on the Voting Browser button (looks like a voting device)
c. at the bottom click Results Browser
d. Choose Export to Excel. The Excel spreadsheet has Tabs at the bottom so
that you can see your results by student, question, etc.
Note: The device can be renamed with your students’ names on them. To vote anonymously
without other students seeing each other’s answers or names, in the browser, click the
ActiVoting Browser; click the rolodex card with a question mark. Your students names will
not show up when voting, but their names will show up when you export results to Excel,
so it looks like your grade book.

I. Question Wizard (Used to insert questions on a blank flipchart)
1. Open ActivInspire
2. Close the dashboard
3. At the top left hand corner of the page, click Insert
4. Select Questions (insert 1 per page for activotes, insert multiple for activexpressions)
5. You will now be typing the gray boxes under the headings Question and Question
6. Begin entering your text, you’ll get options to enter your possible answers on the
right side of the screen (can’t use questions that require short answers with ActiVotes)

7. Under question properties, replace the word option with your answer choices
8. Type your question in the white box
9. Click the red x on the right to remove answer choices that you don’t need
10. Choose the type of option label (upper case, lower case or Number)
11. Specify a time limit for the students to answer the questions if desired
12. Scroll down below the timer
13. Type in your answer choices

14. Check the box Assign correct answers
(vote results will show the correct answer as yellow and the incorrect answers as blue)
15. Check each box beside the correct answer to your question
16. You have the option of creating a follow up question if you wish, if not just click Done
17. If you want to use a design template, click in the box
“Replace the page content with a new box”

18. The box gives you several options for page layouts, click on the one you want to use
19. Choose templates based on your target group, i.e. some templates have 1,2,3 vs. A,B,C
20. Select Apply and Done when finished
II. Express Poll
This is used when you are using flipchart that has a question already on it {not from a question wizard},
you write a question, TCAP practice tests that already have the questions, or you want instant feedback
1. Open the flipchart or document with the question you want to vote on
2. Click the ExpressPoll button on your toolbar
3. You will see a round button show up on the document or flipchart
4. Hover over the ExpressPoll button and choose the gear at the bottom
5. Choose the device you are using, either ActiVotes or ActivExpressions
6. Choose the question type you want to answer
7. Choosing a multiple choice questions require you to choose the number of responses
8. The timer will pop up
9. Set the timer and it will automatically to countdown
10. When voting is finished your results will show up on the page
