Love of Learning

Students enjoy learning through outdoor spac-es such as the Wonder Garden and Trailwise. In the garden, students study biology and natu-ral sciences while growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plants. Through Trailwise, students explore Native American culture through collaborative outdoor activities at Re-flection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center.

Joy of Service

Children take pleasure in writing letters to their friends and teachers. Our school post office is managed by the Fourth Grade. Students serve in specific roles to ensure that mail is properly de-livered each Friday morning. We welcome letters from parishioners!

A Lively Faith

Members of the Joy of Service club share ideas and expectations with their classmates.

The purpose of the Lay Ministry Committee is to help comfort those among us who are in need whether through illness, death in the family, or “any other adversity.” We pray for those in need. We send cards and take food. We call members of our parish who are home-bound and try to keep up with their needs (rides to church, doctors, etc.). At Christmas and Easter, we take gift baskets to them. We also assist with hospitality during funeral visitations.

The Lay Ministry Committee was organized in 1982 by Dor-othea Argo, now deceased, who for many years was a vital member of our parish. About eight ladies were on the committee at its beginning. We strive to continue their work here at St. Peter’s Church.

The work of the Lay Ministry Committee is very rewarding to those involved. It gives members a chance to meet and minister to a group of our parishioners who are separated from the community be-cause of illness or injury. Our parish is a caring community and we need to be connected in as many ways as possible. This committee provides an important link to those who are often overlooked.

If anyone is interested in joining, please contact Lucy Robinson at 265-0841 or join us on the first Wednesday of the month at 10:45 a.m. in the Bracewell Room. (Due to Holy Conversations this month, we will meet on October 12.) We welcome new members!

A Note from the Interim Rector

Dear Parish Family; There are 10 Tasks to which an Interim Rector must attend. Each let-ter I write will deal with one of those Tasks, in the order of where the Parish is or needs to be at a given time. This month's task is "Attention to Stewardship and Financial Matters." In the Canons of the Church all matters that deal with Finance are the responsibility of the Lay Leadership in the Parish. Items such as Budgets and Property Management and asking for your Annual Gift to the Parish fall under the responsibility of the Vestry and lay members of the Parish. In a perfect world every person would give what God asks of us, 10% or a tithe of all that we earn or own each year. BUT since things are not “perfect,” your Vestry and Priest will ask you over the coming weeks to give generously to the Ministry and Programs of St. Peter's. The Parish, like you, gives first to its commitment to the Diocese. As my family each year looks at annual giving, we start with our commitment to the Church and then we consider other gifts we will make to special needs such as our University, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Episcopal Relief & Develop-ment, etc. Like you, there are serious choices to be made and we do not give to every request. It has been said that if you want to know what is most important to a person look at his/her checkbook. It is true! Jesus spends more time speaking to issues of money and its use than any other topic of his ministry. When he says, "You cannot serve God and wealth," He is saying that life's meaning requires of us that we set priorities and honor God's issues before our own. St. Peter's cannot operate without your gen-erous commitment to its ministry. Your Vestry will estimate the Budget for 2017 and will make its commitment individually and corporately to the spread of God's Kingdom. I call on each of you to prayerfully consider your commitment and think of your time, talents, and financial gifts. You will receive a letter and Pledge Card soon. Please respond meaningfully and expeditiously. Now, as to why this annual standard is important for the Interim Min-istry: My primary work is to “prepare the way” for the new Rector of St. Peter's. When a potential Rector looks at the ministry and programs of St. Peter's, he/she will look very carefully at the financial situation in our Parish and School. At the top of the list is how seriously we take our personal giving to this good work. Stewardship is a term with which you are very familiar. Be prayerful in your personal consideration of this important subject and come and speak to Vestry members or your Interim Rector as you look to God in all of the gifts that comprise your life. We are blessed to be called to service in this place. Let our financial giving reflect just how much this Christian calling means to us. Faithfully, John Bonner

Please pray for our Rector Search:

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on St. Peter’s Church,

and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we

may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people

and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COLLEGE & CAREER

SEEK • PRAY • LOVE

St. Peter’s College & Career is a group of like-minded young

adults pursuing relationships with God and with one another.

C&C is a wonderful opportunity for young adults to grow with

Christ by engaging in fellowship, conversation, and outreach. We

regularly meet on Monday evenings (NEW DAY) beginning with

dinner at 7 pm. All are welcome!

Involvement with Project Canterbury

Once a month, we gather with the members of Project Canter-

bury in Christ Church's kitchen to prepare food, then go out

into downtown with our trusty wagons to share it with the poor

and homeless. We distribute the food to all who gather and are

hungry as a way to live out Christ's ministry in the world. We've

now become well known to folks downtown, and have gotten to

know many of the homeless very well.

Hiking Trip

College & Career decided to take some time to relax from the

stress of our daily lives and engage with one another through

nature. Hiking is a wonderful way to be with one another and

truly see the face of Christ through your surroundings. Come

join us next time!

Blessing of the Animals

We will celebrate the birthday of St. Francis on Sunday, October

9, with a blessing of the animals

in the parking lot at the 9:00 am

service. Bring your well-behaved pets on this special day as we remember a saint who val-

ued all living things. (There will be no Sunday school on this day.)

Fast Day to benefit the Community Kitchen: October 23

The Community Kitchen does more than feed homeless people. They provide and coordinate services that help people rise

up out of homelessness. Included among these are drug and alcohol

treatment, job training, and independent life skills training. They

provide a place to stay during the day, emergency beds on the cold-est nights of the year, clothing and household items, and tempo-

rary, transitional, and permanent housing.

Fast Day is their biggest fundraiser of the year, and St.

Peter's Church & School will participate this year. The Church will hold its annual Fast Day simple soup and bread lunch on October

23. Becky Elliott will again favor us with her wonderful rolls and if

you bring extra money you can order rolls for your holiday meals

to benefit CREATE's outreach ministries. Becky will have one pick-up date before Thanksgiving and one before Christmas. (The rolls

will be frozen.)

So we hope you will come to Fast Day at 10 am or at noon

on October 23. Have free soup and bread and donate to the Com-munity Kitchen what you would pay a restaurant for your family

to go out and eat a meal. Take-out will also be available. See you

there!
