Communication Issues in Liverpool
•Of 108 GP practices across Liverpool 80% have patients who are none English speaking
•90% of GPs still use family member or friend of patient
•20% of GP’s “speak slowly, loudly and use gesticulation” with speakers of another language
•30% of other language speaking patients do not understand their GPs
•50% of GPs know of telephone interpreting service, only 25% use this

Research findings
•Majority of pupils in one school were < 1 year in England when going to do their GCSE
•Some pupils have not even been in education before due to conflict in country of birth
•Many parents spoke poor or no English
•Many parents aspire to good education for their children
•Responses of schools to research varied from none to excellent
•Community & voluntary organisations vital support
