President’s Message

Happy February! In January, we discussed the many committees that it takes to make our club run and be successful. We are in need of several volunteers for chair positions for several committees. The committees are listed in the minutes and you can see the openings. If you would like to take a position or have questions, please contact me. This is your club and it takes each of us to make is successful. We had a nice Meet the Breed at Petco on Jan 28. Thanks for all that came and shared your dogs with folks and answered questions about your breeds. Michelle Howard and I are working on putting together a Rally class for beginners and run throughs for those that need practice. Let Michelle or me know if you are interested and we will let you know when we have a date and time to start. I hope to see you at the meeting Wed night! Kaye

Montgomery Kennel Club

Minutes – January 18, 2012 meeting The meeting was held at Goodwyn Community Center and called to order by Kaye Stevenson, President, at 7:15 pm. There were 22 members and 4 guests in attendance. Kaye welcomed our guests, Alex Perez (Collie, Sheltie and Chihuahua), Janie Drake (Rottweiler), Kelly Grant Preston (Golden Retriever Mix) and Rod (NOTE: No last name was shown on sign-up sheet). Note – those guests having attended two or more meetings after receipt of membership application are eligible for membership upon a vote by the board – comments on any prospective member should be addressed to a board member as soon as possible.). Treasurer’s Report: Mike Frakes presented the final report from our November, 2011 show:

Total Revenue: $15,451.20 Total MKC Expenses: 9,232.82 Net Income: $ 4,122.65 President: Our 2012 shows will be on Friday and Saturday, Thanksgiving weekend. Cahaba Valley Kennel Club will have their show on Sunday.

There was a discussion about possibly having a theme for trophies (i.e., towels or throws) paid for by members for one show day. The other day we could have the traditional donated trophies. Several members expressed a preference for either “breed specific” or “theme” trophies. There is still time to make a decision so we will discuss this matter again at a later date. Dave announced that trophy commitments need to be made by June, 2012. He and Ellen are working on a form for the web site and email for members to fill out to specify the type of trophies donated and exactly what they are for. COMMITTEE REPORTS: Match: Dave Cowles made the report for Ryan. He announced that the match was a success. MKC cleared $499.00. Meet the Breed: Brenda announced that there will be a Meet the Breed at Petco in Montgomery on Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We need as many people as possible to turn out. A reminder will be emailed to the membership before the 28th. Education: Trish said that she has been going out and doing some educational events. She has printed up some coloring books that are dog related for the children. They have been a big hit with the children. Also, since we have some new members and other members who may want shirts, this might be a good time to do another order. She will get the information to the secretary to email to the membership. Hospitality: Amie announced that Alan, Joan, Ann and Ray have volunteered to bring refreshments next month. Kaye announced that the Board talked about possibly having members bring whatever refreshments they wanted to the meetings rather than having volunteers do the refreshments. This would spread the responsibility for refreshments more evenly among the members instead of over-burdening those few members who always step up and provide refreshments. If members want to bring something they can, if no one brings anything, then we won’t have anything. Refreshments will be provided next month, after that we may try having members bring what they want. Announcements: For our November show we will have an eye clinic; breed match; Show and Go; CGC; Best Puppy (Friday); Best Bred By (Saturday); and Wine and Cheese. More volunteers will be needed to cover these events as well as additional prizes. Old Business: None

New Business: Rea announced that the Shelter Draw Down will be next month. Tickets will be $100 each with a chance to win $10,000. It will be at Bonnie Crest Country Club on February 25, 2012. Kaye did an overview of MKC Committees, including chairs and vacancies. There are still a number of vacancies that need to be filled. Corrine is the Volunteer Coordinator. Anyone who is willing to help out is asked to contact Corrine and let her know. Eric Johnson led a discussion about the PUPS legislation in Washington. It will most likely pass the House, but there is no way of knowing what will happen in the Senate. Eric said that there is a website with a very good video that everyone needs to see. He will send the link and information for contacting congressmen and senators to voice opposition to the pending legislation to the secretary to send out to the membership.

Kaye said that ACC has signed up in opposition to the bill and everyone should contact members of the House and Senate in Washington to oppose the bill. Please let Corrine at corrine.dreyfus.ctr@csd.disa.mil know if you can volunteer for anything. There are numerous things we need volunteers for. For example, meet the breed, education, and dog shows. Signing up for various things does not mean you are obligated. You will just be contacted when needed and if you are not available at the time, you can just say no. Please consider being a volunteer.

Brags

Ryan and Kate (GCH Wildbriar Whimsical of Longlesson) did MKC proud this weekend, 14 and 15 January, in Starkville MS.. This first weekend out in 2012 they earned a Hound Group 2 on Saturday and a Hound Group 1 on Sunday, as well as Owner Handler Group 1s both days. Ryan also enjoyed showing Bouviers for Corinne and Frank Dreyfus. BIS Saturday was the Saluki and on Sunday it was a black standard poodle. They won't be showing as much after 20 February since it is Ryan's senior year and senior Baseball season. However, it looks like they will enjoy what limited showing they will be doing. Carol Zienert and the Wildbriar crew Murphy is reporting in from the Laughing Dog NADAC Agility Trial this past weekend where she yipped and yapped and spun to three second places but no “Q’s”. Her brother, Clipper, had lots of fun. His favorite color for the weekend was red for second place but he did “Q” twice! His “Q”ing earned him his Novice Hoopers Certificate. Their sister, Cisco, couldn’t keep her mouth shut and listen. But despite all of her talking she earned a first place and a “Q” in Novice Hoopers and Novice TouchNGo. In her Open Weavers she “Q”ed with a first place. Then she showed everyone that she could compete with the “big guys” with a “Q” and first place in Elite Jumpers. Then she gave her mom a run for her money twice with two “Q”’s, two firsts and her Elite Tunnelers Certificate. Murphy is reporting in with the results of a wonderful NADAC agility trial weekend at the Gulf Coast Chihuahua Club trial. She got to run in Tunnelers twice, placing 3rd with only five seconds over course time.

Clipper and mom got in sink. He came home with five “Q”’s – one in Tunnelers, one in Hoopers, one in Touch-N-Go and two in Jumpers. In addition, he received his Novice Touch-N-Go Certificate, plus his Outstanding Novice Jumpers Certificate. Cisco was flying low and fast all weekend. When she was talking/barking at mom, she was busy “Q”ing. She came home with lots of ribbons – all first places. She had two “Q”s in Open Regular; a “Q” in Open Weavers; a “Q” in Elite Tunnelers; and a “Q” in Novice Chances. In addition, Cisco was busy adding three more titles to her name. “Q” in Novice Touch-N-Go which resulted in her Superior Novice Touch-N-Go Certificate; then a “Q” Novice Hoopers which resulted in her Superior Novice Hoopers Certificate; and last a “Q” in Elite Jumpers resulted in her Elite Jumpers Certificate. Also, Murphy wants everyone to know something exciting happened with Kane. She hopes his mother sends in the brag!!! Susan Barmby My self-colored, spotted, Chinese Crested male, "Special", took WD for a 4 point major in Charleston, SC on Saturday Jan. 28, 2012 and finished his Championship under Judge Luc Belieu and is now CH.
