DESCRIPTION
(Portland, OR) Community outreach, consensus building, community, city, campus, transportation and station planning, rights of way design, and architecture are just a few of the things that are involved in the design and construction of public transportation. This document oulines the importance of "connecting" places, activities, people, communities, and insititutions with photography, diagrams, drawings, and illustrations that are part of the on-going process from finish to end. It is first and foremost a listening exercise. This work was done as a Senior Urban Designer with Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects LLCTRANSCRIPT

an active public domainThe nature of the west side light rail workshops were to facilitate conversations about the quality of place as envisioned by those
who lived in the community, those who might move to the community and others who had an active interest in assisting in
a vision for Beaverton’s future.
There was a great deal of information available to the partici-pants that included schedules, project facts, a description of
light rail and potential alignments and comparable endeavors in places beyond Portland. Within this environment
converstaions were facilitated and illustrated.

Coming down from the HillIt was concluded that an urban tram would be the most direct way to connect OHSU to the developable waterfront properties to expand it’s campus and misson as the hilltop campus was reaching it’s limit with regards to space.
North Macadam Master Plan 2002
Three Institutions, an emerging neighborhood and a whole city
As Portland has continued to strengthen the relationship between parts of the city and it’s growing institutions, the catalytic nature of light rail and streetcar has extended to the OHSU Campus and South Waterfront. A new bridge across the river will connect OMSI and central eastside and the Conven-
tions center at Lloyd District.
OHSU Master Plan 2007
1. Accomodate an expanding mission for OHSU2. Reinforce OMSI as a catalyst for science, industry, and education3. Connect both banks of the River in a manner that enables OHSU and OMSI to transform the South Waterfront Basin4. Connect SW and SE neighborhoods in a manner that enables them to share services and assets5. Provide a comprehensive Central City transit, open space, bicycle and pedestrian link between east and west sides south of downtown6. Secure the future of the Central Eastside Industrial District7. Build critical links of the regional transportation and open space systems
a synthesis of goals

Transit CirculationThe OHSU campus will be served by light rail, streetcar, and bus.
Streetcar from the central eastside will arrive on the campus via the new Willamette River bridge, and join streetcar lines passing through the district on SW Moody and SW Bond–SW River Parkway to downtown Portland and points south. Eastbound streetcar will join buses in the right lane of SW Porter prior to crossing the bridge.
Light rail will carry campus visitors north to downtown Portland, and south across the new bridge to SE Portland and Milwaukee. Trains will cross SW Moody on SW Porter and stop at a central platform before crossing the bridge to OMSI. Buses will also use the bridge, and will connect the campus to many of the key arterial streets in SE Portland and Clackamas County. Buses will stay in the transit street with light rail, and continue following trains up the transit-only elevated structure towards PSU and downtown Portland.

Campus Streets and SW Sheridan
The SW Porter Transit Right of Way will accommodate light rail, streetcar, and buses. A center platform will serve eastbound and westbound LRT. Buses and eastbound streetcar will operate in lanes outside the LRT lanes and will stop along the sidewalks on the north and south sides of the transit street.
SW Sheridan, SW Arthur and SW Baker comprise the east-west streets through the Schnitzer Campus. These streets are proposed as 60 foot wide Public Access Easements with two travel lanes and parking on both sides of the street.
SW Baker and SW Arthur will have swales located within the parking zones. They will be curbless and promote the character of a contiguous environment between the campus buildings that abut them.

TriMet 4 Corners 2007
a public roomstreet trees
rail and pedestrians
curbs
the intersection of light rail, streetcar, cars, pedestrians comprised a complex mix of activity with varying priorities. To make the proper clearance at the center of the navigable channel of the river the slope was above the maximum for the location of a light rail station and stop that required a minimum 1.75%. The solution became a center platform station on the western side of the intersection. This 90’ ROW intersected with both the campus promenade and the River Parkway. The confluence of these three elements were resolved in a manner that enhanced the surround-ing developable properties and created a plaza full of activity and promise.
