Balanced Force

Balance forces are two forces acting in opposite directions on an object, and equal in size. Anytime there is a balanced force on an object, the object stays still or continues moving continues at the same speed and in the same direction.

Unbalanced Force

1. When two forces acting on an object are not equal in size.

2. Unbalanced forces cause: a still object to move, an object to speed up or slow down, a moving object to stop, a moving object to change direction.

Definition: A change in position over time.

Speed

Definition: The rate of motion. (how fast motion happens)

Speed is the measure of how fast something moves or the distance it moves, in a given time.

Ball 1 moved 5 meters in 2 seconds.

(Slower speed)

Ball 2 moved 10 meters in 2 seconds.

(Faster speed)

speed = distance ÷ time

3. A women traveled 500 m in 20 s. What was her speed?

4. A wheelchair racer completes a 100 meter course in 20 seconds.

200 m / 25 s = 8 meters per second

100 m / 50 s = 2 meters per second

500 m / 20 s = 25 meters per second

100 m / 20 s = 5 meters per second
