About the Take Wings Foundation

Founded in 1997 by actress Terri J. Vaughn, Take Wings Foundation (TWF) provides a variety of activities for young women living in at risk communities that allows them the opportunity to interact with positive role models, participate in community service projects, and receive academic scholarships. The young women participate in three all day workshops each year that address a variety of topics that are relevant to challenges teens face, such as health and wellness, self sufficiency, personal responsibility and academic success. Through their participation in these various activities TWF offers a safe and supportive place for youth to discuss personal issues that affect most underserved youth.

Each year there are anywhere from 5 to 10 young women who receive the TWF Scholarship. The amount awarded to each recipient depends on monies raised from our annual fundraiser which you are supporting this evening! Over this past year, TWF has taken steps to extend our outreach and in 2011 we formally launched our young men’s program. Stay tuned as we develop this wing of our foundation. Our hope is that tonight you will learn more about TWF, feel the passion that Take Wings is built on, and make the decision to continue to support our youth as they Take Wings and Soar!

Malinda WilliamsEvening Co-Host

Malinda Williams, an esteemed Hollywood sweetheart, will again grace the silver screen alongside Chris Rock in Julie Delpy’s “Two Days in New York”.

A true motion picture star, Malinda recently starred in “First Sunday” (Screen Gems), a feature film starring Ice Cube and directed by David E. Talbert, and Tyler Perry’s “Daddy’s Little Girls”, where she portrayed Maya, the assistant and friend to Gabrielle Union’s character, Julia, a successful lawyer who falls in love with a janitor named Monty (Idris Elba), much to the chagrin of her father. Maya convinces Julia that Monty is a good guy and she should listen to her heart and not to her judgmental family and friends about his social status.

In 2005, Malinda starred in the Outkast film, “Idlewild” (Universal). “Idlewild” was Malinda’s first starring role in a

major musical production. In this period piece, also starring Big Boi and Andre 3000, Malinda portrayed Zora, the wife of “Rooster” (Big Boi). Malinda also recently starred on the television drama “Windfall”(NBC), where she portrayed Kimberly George, a 22 year- old single mother whose luck found her winning the $386 Million dollar lottery and left her life in the trailer park behind.

If you ask this talented actress some of her career goals, she will tell you, “I just want to portray African-American women accurately, because that is all I represent; not necessarily positively or negatively, just correctly.” If this beautiful actress’s face seems familiar, it may be because she spent five years portraying Tracey “Bird” Van Adams, a beauty salon owner and struggling entrepreneur on Showtime’s ground-breaking, history making series “SoulFood.” Malinda has worked consistently in a business where many careers are short- lived.

In 2003 and 2004 she earned an NAACP Image Award nomination for “Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series”, and in 2002, 2003and 2004 the series received the NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Drama Series” with yet another nomination in 2004.

Malinda’s leading role film credits include: The Wood (MTV /Paramount), High School High (TriStar), and An Invited Guest which won the Best of Show at the 1999 Acapulco Black Film Festival and the Audience Award at the 1999 Urban World Festival in New York. She also starred in Dancing in September (HBO). Other film credits include: Sunset Park (Columbia/TriStar) and A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (New Line). Malinda’s guest starring television credits include: CBS’s The District, Law and Order: SVU and ABC’s NYPD Blue.

Having recently wrapped production on David O. Russell’s latest project “Nailed”, and currently writing a blog for Essence.com, Malinda also finds time to work with non-profit organizations such as The Take Wings and Chryalis Foundations.

Having the ability to portray characters ranging from a sophisticated beauty salon owner, to a mentally challenged teenager, has branded Malinda Williams one of Hollywood’s most well-respected actresses.

Nicole Ari ParkerEvening Co-Host

Nicole is as adept at portraying strong sexy women as she is at playing vulnerable and complicated characters. She is best known for her outstanding performance as ‘Teri Joseph’ of Showtime’s award winning original series “Soul Food” and has displayed her acting range in several blockbuster and independent films. She most recently starred in the new ABC drama series “The Deep End” where she played Susan Oppenheim, a partner at Sterling, who prides herself on her “take-no-prisoners” attitude. She can currently be seen in the indie comedy 35 and Ticking directed by Russ Parr.

Previously, Nicole starred opposite Eddie Murphy in Paramount Pictures’ Imagine That and will next appear with Rockmond Dunbar in Pastor Brown. She has been featured in Touchstone Picture’s Remember the Titans,

Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins with Martin Lawrence, Boogie Nights with Mark Wahlberg, the HBO Original Film, Dancing in September, and opposite Taye Diggs in Fox Searchlight’s Brown Sugar.

She has also been featured in many independent films like 200 Cigarettes, Shooting Gallery’s Loving Jezebel, Subway Stories, and Sebastian Cole, a winner at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

Nicole has an extensive background in theatre, having performed in incredible Off-Broadway productions like “Chicago,” “House of Lear,” and “Romeo and Juliet.” She also appeared in the television movies “The Loretta Claiborne Story,” “Exiled,” and “Mind Prey.”

Nicole always knew she wanted to be an actress. She began pursuing her dream at the Baltimore Actors Theatre and then it was on to Washington Ballet Company before moving to New York to study further at New York University. She is a graduate of NYU’s famed Tisch School of the Arts.

Nicole has been nominated for seven NAACP Image Awards and had the pleasure of presenting President Bill Clinton with a Thurgood Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award at a ceremony hosted by the NAACP. She also received a special award at the Urban World Film Festival, for Outstanding Body of Work as an Actress.

Nicole also starred alongside former “Soul Food” co-star and real life spouse, Boris Kodjoe in the Paramount/UPN sit-com “Second Time Around.” Nicole and Boris have raised the bar of the Hollywood power couple. By putting love and family first, they are inspiring millions.

In January 2009, she was featured in People Magazine to introduce Sophie’s Voice Foundation (www.sophiesvoicefoundation.org), the charitable organization she started with husband Boris to raise awareness about children and adults living with spina bifida.

Kelly PriceEntertainment

The second of three daughters, Kelly Price was raised in Queens, New York, in the church. That’s where her musical roots were planted, and tended to, early on. She was brought up in a strict, old- school Pentecostal household that prohibited her from wearing jewelry, make-up and pants (long skirts were the preference). But like most creative spirits, Price was destined to soar far beyond her point of origin. And so, she has.

At this juncture, Kelly has learned to loosen the reins on her creativity. Results of her efforts are illustrated beautifully, truthfully, on her new album Kelly (Sang Girl/My Block Records). Completely independent of the major label machine, it’s through her own Sang Girl label, and musical partnership with producer Warryn Campbell’s My Block Records, that Kelly delivers her most honest and transparent work to date.

Leading the album out of the gate is the spirited single Tired, which received a 2011 GRAMMY® nomina-tion in the Best Female R&B Vocal Performance category. The song sheds light on the social ills that not only cause her distress, but also seem to plague our world community. The follow-up single is the Stokley Williams-produced duet, Not My Daddy, which is an action call for couples to make a strong effort to let love back into the relationship. Kelly and Stokley command gripping vocal synergy on this compelling track.

Along her journey, she’s collaborated with the likes of Mariah Carey, George Michael, The Isley Brothers, and Sean “Diddy” Combs, as well as Faith Evans, Whitney Houston, and numerous other musical icons. Kelly expanded her reach to include modeling for Lane Bryant and Ashley Stewart. She has taken her talents to the screen and stage with roles in Soul Food, the TV series, Bringing Down the House, and the stage plays Why Did I Get Married? and The Bible Experience. In 2005, she added the title of self-published author to her resume with the release of the inspirational tome, Inscriptions of My Heart.

Price’s philanthropic efforts have played an integral role in her life as well. Her commitment to the fight against breast cancer has been paramount since she vowed to actively support the fight and raise awareness. She took action when she co-wrote the song “Love Sets You Free” with Denise Rich and Teddy Riley. The song was remixed to feature several other Def Jam/Def Soul artists, with all proceeds being donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and to Denise Rich’s Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. Within six months of its commercial release, the song raised over $250K, which was, and continues to generate funds for both foundations.

There’s no denying that music is where Kelly Price’s heart resides. With the release of Kelly, one might won-der what she hopes to accomplish this go round. “My goal for this project was to create a contemporary R&B album that listeners play without skipping a single song. Hopefully, I got it right…I think I did!”

Every day, more than 1,200 of our city’2 children and teens come to Boys & Girls Clubs ofSan Francisco.

They come to be with their friends and mentors. They come to get help with their homework, spend time in the technology center ordiscover a talent for art they never knewthey had. They come to build strongcharacter and learn powerful skillsthat last a lifetime.

They come away realizing thatthe future starts here.
