This all-day event includes a ticket to AsYou Like Itand features two workshopsthat complement the TakeOverproduction. The Director, AndraCatincescu, will give an informal talkabout the process of creating a showtogether with a Q&A.

Stage Combat

A two-hour workshop with stagecombat coach and CommunityProducer for the York Mystery Plays,Liam Evans-Ford. Participants willengage in either armed or unarmedstage fighting and learn the skillsneeded to create the illusion of stagecombat. All levels of experience arewelcome.

Shakespeare: Page to Stage

York Theatre Royal Associate DirectorJuliet Forster brings her skills from hertime as Associate Practitioner at theRoyal Shakespeare Company to leadparticipants in a two-hour workshop.Participants will explore the life of aplay text and how it can be translatedinto performance.

By Evan PlaceyWe are very excited to announce anexclusive residency with ForwardTheatre Projectwho have createdScarberia, a brand new piece oftheatre for young peopleselected bythe TakeOver board. An associate company of PainesPlough,Forward Theatre Projectare acollective of 25 emerging theatredirectors, writers and designers whoaim to develop relationships betweenemerging theatre artists and regionaltheatres. After being commissioned byTakeOver, the Scarberiacreative teamundertook a five-week research periodto develop the piece for a youngaudience. The team worked withyoung people in Scarborough,England, and Scarborough, Canada,to coordinate an international pen-palproject that connects young people onboth sides of the Atlantic.

TakeOver12’s Artistic Director,Andra Catincescu, presents aRomany Gypsy re-working ofShakespeare’s comedy of cross-dressing and love-making.

The Forest of Arden has become ahiding place for all the mavericks inFrance. Among them is the banishedRosalind, who takes refuge bydisguising herself as a boy.Unbeknownst to her, the man shesecretly loves has also fled to Arden.Unable to reveal her identity, Rosalindinstead offers to coach him in the artof wooing his beloved. This is a storyof love and defiance that followsbanished lords into a forest where allrunaways, rich or poor, becomeequals.

In TakeOver12’s fresh approach tothis woodland utopia, the outlaws ofArden live as travellers. Thedazzlingly fast Romany Gypsy musictakes the audience through a journeythat casts the exiles from the luxury ofthe Court into the world of shepherdsand nomads.

Featuring a Community Cast.

As You Like Itis, at its heart,a story about young menand women taking over anoutlaw society in the forest ofArden. It subverts old-fashioned rules from theetiquette of wooing to thetyranny of imposed genderroles.
