All students have returned to school and are loving learning with their mates. A very big thank you to all parents and carers for having the students so confident, organised and prepared to return. It was evident that lots of conversations had occurred as the children breezed in with a spring in their steps and knew exactly where to be at the end of the day. Drop off and pickups are running like clockwork - even with 1100 students! I really hope your children have loved being back and are sharing with you in great excitement about their school days. Current social distancing measures will continue to be a part of our daily school routine most likely until at least the end of this term. Please remember - if you need to get any important messages to your child’s teacher, send an email, and if needed, the class teacher can respond to you when they are free. As previously explained, there will be no parades, sports days, culminating or other school wide events taking place this term. We will keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to reintroduce many of these extra activities in Term 3. Unfortunately, along with many other big events, the Talara Winter Sun Carnival for 2020 has had to be cancelled. This was a really difficult decision for our P&C, as it is the first time since the school opened that the biannual community event has not been able to go ahead. With so many factors, and such significant work being required to prepare for such a large event, it will now be 2022 before our next Winter Sun Carnival. Our amazing P&C team are exploring other smaller scale options to try to bring our parent community together in 2020. The Colour Run is still planned for the students, (date yet to be confirmed) and the P&C team might just have a special ‘parent only’ event in the pipeline for early September. Keep Friday night, 11 September free on your calendar just in case. Across Queensland, P&C Day was celebrated last Friday 22 May. This is always a fabulous opportunity to publicly thank the hundreds of hardworking P&C members for the tireless, voluntary work they do each year to improve educational facilities, resources and student outcomes in Queensland State Schools. P&C Day is held during National Volunteer Week, the best time to celebrate their inspiring efforts! There is no doubt Talara Primary College would not be the amazing, caring and well-resourced community that it is without the vital input and support from these dedicated parent volunteers. On behalf of the 1130 students, 115 staff and all of the families, I send out a massive thank you to each and every parent who is actively involved in our Talara Primary College P&C. You guys are invaluable and so committed to all of the students, teachers and families in our college!

Welcome Back to Prep and Year 1Welcome back everyone! No doubt in the past 6 weeks youhave faced a gamut of emotions and experiences as a family- some that you may have never experienced before. As ouryoungest students returned, we were met with a range ofemotions at the gate. There were happy, sad, relieved andexcited children and parents! With the new “at gate” drop offscame a new challenge for our littlies, as they adjusted to their“new normal”. We would like to happily report that your childrenhave been amazingly resilient, fabulously persistent and haveblossomed into confident little people, moving forward with thecurrent change.

Many parents are excited that their child is settling into this newroutine, whilst others are concerned with their child settling. All of these emotions are normal and very much okay. Pleasebe assured that your child’s emotional needs are being lookedafter once with they are with us. We are re-visiting our regularclass routines, albeit with added handwashing and hygienereminders. If you have any questions or concerns, pleasecontact myself or your class teacher via email or phone. We arestill here to communicate with and are missing our face to facetime with you!

As you would already know, all planned large events arecurrently cancelled, including parade, sports days andexcursions. Once these are back to normal, we will let youknow. Thank you for your understanding.

Amanda BrewerDeputy Principal

Program Achieve: Kids are like icebergs. For the remainder of the term, I will be spending some timeexplaining core elements of our whole school wellbeingprogram: You Can Do It! Program Achieve. Program Achieve isbeing taught as a key part of our Health curriculum, meaningthat students are receiving weekly lessons in social emotionallearning.

One of the key concepts that Program Achieve teaches isattitudes and a great way to explain this is using an iceberganalogy.

Students are like icebergs in that the only part of the icebergthat we can see, is the smallest part that sits above the water;and that in students, the only part we can see is a student’sbehaviour/actions (what they do and say). Below the waterline, where we cannot see, lays the student’s feelings or emotions –and it is how they feel that causes them to behave as they do(both positive & negative behaviours follow this model). Belowtheir feelings, lay their thinking or self-talk – and it is whatthey say to themselves in their head that causes their feelings, which causes their behaviour. Lastly, at the very bottom, laythe attitudes a student holds about themselves, school and lifearound them. It is these, either positive or negative attitudesthat cause a student to think a certain way, which causestheir feelings and finally their behaviour - which then results inoutcomes, results, and consequences.

Program Achieve focuses on understanding observablebehaviour of students in terms of unseen elements: how theyfeel, self-talk, and at the very bottom/core of their being, theirAttitudes – whether they are under the influence of positiveof negative ones. This helps to explain why two students canget bullied but respond in very different ways; one being reallynegatively affected by the experience and one hardly beingaffected at all.

WHAT ARE ATTITUDES?

NEGATIVEATTITUDES

POSITIVE ATTITUDES

1. Rigid, ‘must’ alwaysbe

“I need the approval ofothers.”

2. Extreme

“It’s awful and terrible tomake mistakes.”

3. Not sensible

I didn’t get a goodgrade. I’m a loser.”

4. Not helpful toachieving goals

“I shouldn’t have to dowork that’s dull.”

1. Flexible, Exceptions ok

“I prefer approval but can survivewithout it.”

2. Moderate

“It’s not the worst thing in theworld to make mistakes.”

3. Sensible

“I didn’t get a good grade. I amme and that’s OK.”

4. Helpful

“I prefer things to be fun. Butsometimes they will dull.”

• Attitudes are similar to a person’s general “outlook”and point of view on themselves, others and life.

• Attitudes are ways an individual evaluates adversityand challenges.

• Attitudes have a powerful influence over the waypeople think, feel and behave.

• The strength with which an attitude is held is often agood predictor of emotions and behaviour. Thestronger the attitude the more likely it would affectemotions and behaviours.

National Reconciliation Week 2020: 27May – 3 June

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learnmore about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achievingreconciliation in Australia. We are very fortunate to live and learnon Gubbi Gubbi lands. This year’s theme is "In This Together".At Talara we acknowledge Reconciliation as an ongoing journeythat in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderpeople is crucial to forming togetherness.

With all students returning to school during Reconciliationweek, it is a great opportunity to reach out and support ourIndigenous students by making them feel connected, valued, and enhance their wellbeing and engagement within the schooland community.

Please take time to share our respect for the traditional ownersof the land we are on because we are all#InThisTogether.Reconciliation Australia #NRW2020

Born Wired: Avoiding online spam, scamsand phishing

If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

The online world provides you and your child with incredibleaccess to communications and information. However, there arealso a number of things that you must be aware of to avoidbeing taken advantage of.

• Check which high school catchment you reside in todetermine your ‘in-catchment’ secondary school

• Check the school’s website or Facebook page forYear 7 information

• Consider if your child is interested in applying for aProgram of Excellence or Extension Program and setsome goals to help them meet the entryrequirements

• Every student must have a BYO device – check theschool website for specifications

• Download the QSchools app and add your‘in-catchment’ high school to receive informationupdates

• Attend an information session in Term 3

• Return the 2021 intended High School Formattached to the letter sent home with Year 6students by Friday 19 June.

• Scams are ways of obtaining information or moneythrough false means.

• Spam is an unsolicited commercial electronicmessage.

• Phishing is the use of email or SMS to encourageindividuals to reveal financial details like credit cardnumbers, account names and passwords or otherpersonal information. Phishing messages can looklike genuine messages from a real bank,

If your child has been affected by spam, scams or phishing, they can report scams by visiting the esafety website.

Mindfulness and Growth Mindset

In the same way, a gardener cannot force a seed or plant togrow, neither can a teacher simply make a student becomemore motivated, develop a growth mindset, or perform betterat school. Rather, just as a gardener creates optimal conditionsto help the seed and plant growth, so too does a teacher createthe conditions and climate to cultivate personal and academicgrowth that can assist a student to flourish.

If the academic environment is carefully monitored, maintainedand continuously tended to, meaningful growth can occur andstudents have the potential to thrive at school and beyond.Concepts such as ‘growth mindset’ and ‘mindfulness’ areintegral to understanding and promoting students’ growth inthe classroom.

It has been a challenging time for all of our children and familiesduring these difficult times, but we are very excited to seeso many children return to care this week after such a longabsence. You have been missed.

Please be assured that we are taking extra precautions toensure all children and staff are safe whilst at the service.

We have introduced theme days to respond to the children'sideas and extend on their learning experiences. Some of ourmost popular days have been Lego Days where we have a legochallenge of the day and children can work individually or withfriends to build an amazing creation to be judged by the group.Challenge Day is also fun, as the children compete for a placein our Talara Book of Challenges, with such challenges as HulaHoop Comp, Egg and Spoon Race and Who Can Jump thefurthest.

Make sure to update your bookings to join in the fun.

We also celebrated International Nurses Day on May 12. Thechildren made a card and we presented it to one of ourhardworking nursing mums as a thank you for all they havedone to keep us safe.

Vacation Care is also fast approaching and our programme willbe online soon, so keep an eye out for updates to book in yourdays.
