• Named for the city Talavera de la Reina in Spain.

• Talavera is also known as Majolica • Majolica is a term from Italy and was a

process Italians used in the 14th century, during the renaissance, to paint the pottery with different pigments.

• Produced in Talavera de al Reina, Spain and Puebla, Mexico.

• Pottery has been used by many different cultures.

• Talavera de la Reina is the place where the famous blue and yellow "talavera" tiles were first made. Both the technique and the tradition of covering church domes and walls with colorful tiles traveled to the Americas with the colonial Spaniards. Architectural and artistic tiles are still made in Talavera today. The scene above may be seen while driving through Talavera de la Reina.

• It used to be that if your Talavera was all blue it was more expensive as the blue coloring was very expensive.

Base glaze is applied by hand to damp, bisqued tiles.

Pierced patterns and transfer powder

The tiles are placed on an easel and hand painted in the studio.

Colorful glaze is hand painted over the base glaze.

Pieces are fired in an electric car kiln.
