By Joe Ziino Saturday September 18th, we had the opportunity to put on a demonstration at a park located behind the Bavarian Inn Restaurant where they were having their annual Oktoberfest festivities. This was the 5th year we have put on this demonstration and a first for a Saturday evening crowd. We were a little concerned at the start of the day due to the rain, but by early afternoon the sky cleared and the weather was perfect as we performed for a good-sized crowd at the festival. We had a good turnout of dogs and handlers for this event and the people of Oktoberfest were very pleased with our demonstration of obedience and agility and presented us with a donation check for $100 for our efforts. We spent a lot of time prior to the demonstration and afterward socializing our dogs with the chil-dren and adults attending the festival as we walked around the grounds. We had 2 dogs dressed in costume that attracted a lot of attention, Peter Edward dressed in Alpine attire and Molly dressed in an Alpine dress with flowered hat. This was an excellent demonstration of the temperament of all our dogs as the both children and adults were able to approach and pet the dogs. We had lots of positive feedback and all the dogs did an excellent job promoting the breed. For those of you who have never attended one of our programs, we provide an overview of how we train our “friends”, at the same time trying to provide the audience with an entertaining program. Our program consists of general healing as a group, followed by jumping exercises from open dogs and utility work from our UD dogs. We follow our training program with an agility demonstration. Because there was a large group of children at this event, after the demonstration we handed out AKC coloring books that help to educate children on the care and handling of dogs. Our four-legged friends as usual did a great job at demonstrating their obedience and agility prow-ess. Overall everyone seemed to have a great time, along with providing some good community service work before and after the demonstrations. Thanks again to everyone who participated; Participating Members, Oktoberfest: Joe, Marla Ziino Molly, Peter Sharon Golden Hawk

Agility Training Update Takin’ a Break

Between some personal commitments of the instructors and reduced class attendance, it makes sense to take a break from agility training. So, there will be no agility classes held during the months of September and October. Classes will resume indoors in November. Agility is fun sport for us to share with out dogs. It’s a great opportunity to get some one-on-one time with our best friend(s), get a little exercise, and improve both verbal and nonverbal human-canine communication skills. If you are interested in joining us on Saturday mornings this winter, please contact Cheri Antony (instructor) by phone at 414-327-9912 or via e-mail at [email protected], or Lois Kutschera (Director of Training) by phone at 262-835-4245.

For those people that still owe for your business cards Please send your check made payable to the GSDCW And mail it to: Sharon Golden 28506 Ivy Lane Waterford, WI 53185 Or if you wish to change your information please see me or E-mail me: [email protected]

Attention German Shepherd Dog Club of Wisconsin Membership:

The current economic climate has left no rock unturned and no life untouched.

From individuals to multi-billion dollar enterprises, we have all been affected. In

an effort to combine the technology of the 21st century with good frugal fund

management, we will be trialing a web-version of the GSDC of WI “Shepherd

Tales” with the November edition of our monthly newsletter.

It is our hope that in doing so, we can present an option for significant savings to

the club (and ultimately the membership) in print cost and postage and still pro-

vide for an excellent communication and information outlet to our membership.

In the future we look to providing a web version of the “Shepherd Tales” for all

members with email access that is easily printable and to continue to provide a

hard copy of our periodical to our members that do not have access to the internet.

The loyalty and ingenuity of our membership is the cement that has kept our club

the quality organization it has been for so many years and for so many individuals

and their German Shepherds. The empathy that we have for one another is one of

the intangible benefits of our club. These are the qualities that we are counting on

in trialing our “new” venture. The internet is a very useful tool and provides the

club with many format and visual options that were previously unavailable. In

addition to the concrete economic benefits inherent in this trial, there is unlimited

creative possibility “unleashed.” This is an exciting venture in terms of presenta-

tion potential and we strongly welcome the “collective creativity” of our member-

ship!!

Thank you for your support!
