See Subi on Sunday The popular See Subi on Sunday tour series is back for its fourteenth year. Between July 2015 and June 2016, the city will present six guided walks which explore different parts of Subiaco’s rich heritage, including a fascinating look at the history of King Edward Memorial Hospital, the interesting personality of former WA Premier Henry Daglish, and an afternoon of petanque at the Palms Community Centre.

This new series begins with a look at the history of the town centre. Reflect on the ANZAC Centenary at the recently restored Subiaco Fallen Soldiers Memorial and explore some of Subiaco’s earliest settlement areas, before viewing the current exhibition, When the Great War came to Subiaco, at Subiaco Museum. Wildlife finds a home in SubiacoThe addition of bird nest boxes at Mabel Talbot Reserve are proving a success, having recently been inhabited by a family of Striated pardalotes, a small brightly coloured native bush bird.

Two eggs and one small chick were observed by the city’s environmental team, with the parents likely foraging nearby for food. The city has a total of eleven wildlife nest boxes installed in various parks and reserves, catering for small birds, microbats, parrots and ducks.

The Striated pardalote had not previously been recorded in the municipality, and has been added to the wildlife register. Another recent addition was the Grey fantail, a small species of bush bird also recorded at Mabel Talbot Reserve.

The city is currently working with local schools to increase habitats available for wildlife within school grounds through the provision of nest boxes and educational talks.

learn more about local wildlife and the city’s initiatives by downloading the Wildlife Enhancement Plan 2014–2019 from the city’s website at www.subiaco.wa.gov.au

Preservation and maintenance of urban trees is an important factor in enhancing the liveability of urban areas.

Street trees provide many benefits that have both economic and intangible values. While they improve land values they also purify urban air, their foliage filters noise, they play a role in modifying the effects of climate, contribute to a sense of seasonal change and provide valuable habitats for wildlife.

The city undertakes regular pruning to maintain the health of street trees and remove hazards, taking into consideration the natural growth and formation of the trees.

Pruning of street trees other than by authorised personnel is not permitted.

Verge development and maintenance guidelines Did you know that the verge is public land controlled by the local authority?

located between the road and an adjacent private property, the verge serves important ecological functions in an urban environment.

Due to the size of the verges, the city does not have the resources to maintain all verges to the standard expected of the community. Therefore the city encourages residents to maintain the section of verge adjacent to their property for their own benefit and the benefit of their local community.

Residents are encouraged to install and maintain soft landscaping on the verge such as mulch and/or low growing native plants or natural lawns. Minimising the use of hard surfaces and adopting these verge treatments adds to the overall aesthetic presentation to the city’s streetscapes.

Contacting the city prior to carrying out any work can save residents time and money and may also prevent the need to have costly non compliant treatments removed.

For more information on road verges please view the city’s verge and street tree policies at www.subiaco.wa.gov.au or contact 9387 0942.
