Chinese people began making a tea drink in the Stone Age. They used leaves from tea bushes which grew wild. They put the leaves in hot water and left them to seep in the water. This let all the flavor go into the water.

About 4000 year ago the Chinese started to grow tea plants on their farms.

Over 2000 years ago Chinese doctors used tea as a medicine. Tea was also used to welcome guests into your home.

1400 years ago traders took tea to the Arab world. Arabs were getting sugar from India, so they started to add sugar to their tea to make a sweet drink.

400 years ago Europeans travelled to China and were given tea to welcome them. They took tea back to Europe and it became a very popular drink. However, tea wouldn’t grow in Europe because it was not the right climate. So that they would not have to keep buying tea from China, the British started to grow tea in India because they ruled that country. Soon a lot of the tea came from India.
